2025 MLB Season Thread
The Tokyo series is March 18-19th, will air on FOX, and is between The Cubs and The Dodgers.
The Regular Season starts Ma
Justin Verlander is the only active pitcher with more wins than David Wells.
If Jack Morris, Harold Baines, and Dave Parker are all hall of famers, then I've got a whole slew of ex Blue Jays that belong.
Carlos Delgado
Fred McGriff
John Olerud
David Wells
Tony Fernandez
Dave Steib
Jimmy Key
Devon White
But really, David Wells would be fun to induct. 239 wins, 10-5 in the playoffs, 2 rings (4-0 in 4 starts for the 98 Yankees). 3439 innings pitched. And a big beer belly.
Freaky.
I was sitting at the Hard Rock Cincinnati poker table last night, and watching the Reds game on the big screen. 3-3 after 7. The Braves started a big rally in the top of the 8th, had 3 runs in so far and I commented, "This is beginning to look like one of those 8 in the 8th situations." It was.
I then commented between innings, "What if the Reds also scored 8 in the 8th? I bet that has never happened in MLB history." Sure enough, the Reds tied it with 8 in the bottom of the 8th.
This kind of uncanny prescience about the games has always been with me, since I was a little boy. I mean, I mean I would only once in a lifetime make such comments, and when I did, it happened.
There was some head scratching at the poker table over it. I then commented that it may have happened before, maybe in the 19th Century. Haven't looked that up yet. Just got back from the poker day trip. And hit some kind of million-to-one shot or so with the comment.
McGriff is in the HOF already

Don't forget his perfect game that he pitched when he was hungover!
He later admitted to being hungover during the game, stating he had a "raging, skull-rattling" headache, according to a TikTok video from Pardon .... He had partied with members of SNL the night before, getting only about an hour of sleep before the game, according to CBS Sports.
****ing LEGEND!
And so ends clase
Say what you will about philly, but we get some things right. Duran basically steps off the plane, has that entrance, and throws 4 pitches.
EDIT: they didn't even go to commercial break.
Rockies vs Pirates game was quite the spectacle tonight.
Every once in awhile you come across a stat that makes you shake your head.
In 1980 George Brett had 9.4 WAR.......... he only played in 117 games.....
He kept mashing in the playoffs too. What a year. Best WAR of a 21 year career. What the best WAR/game in modern era for a position player?
Bonds 11.7 in 143 games (2002) just a little better than Brett here.
Brett's season just beats out Bonds 2001 (11.9 in 153 games)
I can't believe there's a starting pitcher named Janson Junk.
Delgado gotta get in. Such a slugger. Just didn't get the at bats for his raw numbers to pop. But 10+ years of 30/30, 30/40, 40/40 and nearly 40/60 -- homers and doubles -- is just too much like Ruth. 30/30 is a gold standard, 40/40 is a god standard. Come on, man.
Reminds me a bit of Albert Belle in this regard. Both are in the super elite slugger class just behind Ruth and company. Belle with the 50/50 thing nearly thrice (50/53, 37/36 in a season 1/3 strike cancelled, and later 49/50 for the White Sox).
I think Delgado and Belle are both somewhere around the top one percentile of sluggers ever in the game.
Of course slugging and OPS, great, WAR a bit less. I think 10 years of super elite gets you in. 5 got Koufax in.
skenes live for a no-no through 2.

I remember going to a Yankees White Sox game where Clemens gave up 8 in the top of the second. He was getting knocked around and the Yankees made a few errors.
It was a hot summer day game and I almost never left early but I was already thinking this might be a rare early leave.
Yankees tied it in the bottom of the second.

Yankees likely don’t score 8 in the bottom of the 2nd if Clemens doesn’t give up 8.
And I’m not even talking about the butterfly effect.

He was pitching to the score.
