The 2026 Winter Olympics thread
Thanks, I read how everyone is in a fussy over her competing for China, yet being born/raised/trained in USA. and also how NBC is spamming coverage of her.
She's supposedly making 20M a year modeling. I wonder how much of that is going to her Communist brethren.
only government officials are supposed to not make money - everyone else can
she is perhaps the best in the world in her events - so it wasn't a matter of making the team, which is often the case where the 5th best american would not be in the olympics at all if not for competing for the country their grandmother was born in
big reason to choose to compete for china was endorsements, she's a much bigger celebrity over there and she'd make a lot more over there as a result
also, her american dad was never in the picture so she was raised by her mom who is chinese and moved to the usa in the 80s - it's unclear if her mom is a citizen or just holds a green card - although it likely came down to money - she would regularly go back to china and spoke chinese at home growing up so it's a fairly natural choice even without the money factor
She's pretty and won a silver.
Haters can suck it.
Also China>America now, remember.
Looks like Canada will win the gold over the US in the hockey which should restore some of the lols that we are ahead of them in the medal tally
men's hockey quarterfinals:
canada vs czechia/denmark
usa vs sweden/latvia
slovakia vs germany/france
finland vs switzerland/italy
re-seeding after qf, so canada and usa can only meet in the final
This has possibly been discussed many times before, but what does everyone here think about this?Olympics.com (default, can also sort by total medals) NYTimes (default, can also sort by gold, silver, bronze)
The US outlets always sorts by number of overall medals to make the US look better, every official medal table is sorted by gold first, then silver, then bronze.
in my travels i've seen every country does this and finds ways to highlight medal counts in manners that are most favorable to them - i've even seen instances where they weighted it with pointsand don't forget how it's done in dprk
Spoiler
yes i know that meme is fake
Every other country i have lived in or watched Olympics in does it the official way, it is only the US that sorts by medal totals.
Weighted by points is still favouring golds which is in line with official manner.

i've seen other countries do total medal - especially the smaller countries which are more bronze/silver weighted
also seen stuff like gold = 3, silver =2, bronze =1 in situations where country x has 12 total medals, 2 gold, 10 silver, 2 bronze (28 points) and the neighboring countries all have 14ish but of a more standard 3-5-7 configuration that would be higher on the list if we counted by total gold or total medals but lower on the count by 26 points

Cheating Canadian bastards
Us women's curling choked against gb but should be a near lock for medal round because of tie breakers. Think they always get in if gb isn't tied with them as well and maybe even then.
Feel like curling strategy could use some ai assistance on optimal shots in certain spots. It's so abstract I bet humans aren't that great at it. Also just simple things like when to go for 4 points vs give up 2 or take the easy 1.
RuhRohCanada?
U.S. men's curling lost today and I believe they're eliminated. They're nothing without Shustah!
Canada was still like 75% down 2-1
Chechia getting too concerned with playing physical
Get ready to bump the LOLCanada thread
NFL would never allow something like this to happen
3 on 3 OT is brutal for a decider.
Ya not really hockey. Silly they do that for Olympics.
So just for the hockey did all nations get a chance at the QF through the play offs even if they were shocking in the prelims?
