SE Hoya Containment Thread (aka Politics)
Welcome to the Official SE Politics Thread. The aim here is for high quality political discussion and debate. The concomitant aim here is for that high quality discussion and debate to NOT devolve into MAD posting, BAD posting, trolling, name-calling our community fracture.
We embark on this project hoping to encourage fair and thorough exchanges of views, and also fair and thorough advocacy for positions. We should learn a lot.
Rules
1. Posters are required to have 50 posts in SE over the last 365 days. This thread is not a proxy for the Politics forum, or an arena for goal-based issue advocacy from people we don't even know.
2. Pure devil's advocacy will not be tolerated unless it is identified by that poster as the aim of the particular post. There will be no run of the mill nitpickery for the sake of nitpickery.
3. This will be enforced loosely, but you are obligated to outline your basic position on whatever issue you're debating. We will not have loaded, gotcha-style internet-standard race to the bottom terrible posting in this thread. That does not mean you have to state every closely-held belief in every debate. You just can't hide the ball. "I'm not sure what my position is" is a completely valid position to hold.
4. Insults are out. You will not resort to that in this thread, because that will ruin this thread.
5. If you demonstrate an ongoing commitment to lowering the quality of discourse through incessant trolling or simply being really terrible, you'll be removed from this thread.
6. These are subject to significant revision as this thread develops.
There is a tradition in SE of better, fuller, funnier discussion of a really wide range of topics. Let's continue that here.
Someone at our office is dealing with a situation where a client (52 years old) initiated a 2 million dollar 60 day rollover from her IRA and had her sisters (also not yet 60) to do the same for 1 million each to throw into some crypto rug pull they were certain would double their money

There's no doubt a bunch of old people are constantly getting scammed like always. Most crypto liquidity is typically fake anyway thanks to things like Tether, but this seems pretty clearly like fleecing his fans. The venn diagram of those involved with Crypto and those prone to buying Trump's is almost a circle anyway, so you end up with **** like this

Some Head Start programs are already unable to access the federal system they use to draw down their federal grant funding, which could force some to close their doors as early as Wednesday, Tommy Sheridan, deputy director of the National Head Start Association, told CNN on Tuesday.

“Some programs that I just spoke with are having the discussions and trying to figure out, are they going to be able to open their programs tomorrow or not?” Sheridan said, adding that if programs shutter, it could affect parents’ ability to work.
The primary source of federal funding for senior nutrition programs, like Meals on Wheels, is the Older Americans Act Nutrition Programs, which is a grant. So, if the memo applies to this act, “this would presumably halt service to millions of vulnerable seniors who have no other means of purchasing or preparing meals,” Jenny Young, spokesperson for Meals on Wheels America, told CNN on Tuesday.
“Seniors will panic not knowing where their next meals will come from,” said Young.

so what does team orangeman think they're accomplishing with these tariff wars vs china, canada and mexico (saw a headline saying they wanted to do the eu too, but maybe not at this point? please advise)? to my dumbass it seemed like it'd just raise costs and **** up supply chains --> inflation, and then i saw a us chamber of commerce press release say exactly that. especially when combined with ice raids on your slave labour force
from the canadian perspective, they don't even seem to be wanting anything in particular out of this, they just wanna do it for some reason. i suspect it's the same with everyone else. so what gives? i'm not completely fluent in moran...

First, he has no idea about Macroeconomics. He doesn't know the difference between budget deficits and Trade deficits.
With the tariffs, it's all about making some big gesture, having Canada or Mexico or whomever do something they were always going to do anyway, the Trump can claim victory.
The Inflation Reduction Act did more to spur on American manufacturing than tariffs ever will, but thats not the point so it doesn't matter
