Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
I missed the start of the Bond tribute, was it an anniversary or something? I was half expecting a newly minted Bond lead to get announced.
they were 'CHUMMING' the waters after that historic Amazon purchase of the franchise. A good portion of the show was advertisements for IP's... Disney had the guts to 'purchase airtime' for the Snow White content that is coming out soon.
I was rather surprised they didn't include David Niven or Peter Sellers in that actor portrayal Montage
Toosh.
That James Bond tribute with Margaret Qualley starting us off with a dance made me think, hey maybe SHE can be the new Bond! It'd look something like this:
BLOFELD - No, Ms. Bond, I expect you to die."
*Qualley as Bond bites lip seductively*
Broken YouTube LinkWould love to see her as a Bond girl
Or as the next actress to get naked simulate sex and get an Oscar for it
Overall really sad about Amazon buying the franchise tho. Can’t imagine it goes in a positive direction, but would love to be surprised
Well, Bezos and Amazon certainly improved the Washington Post, right??
...right?
Another great Oscar 2025 hilarious momemt was when Mikey Madison accepted the award for Best Actress for her role in "Anora," taking a moment to "recognize and honor the sex worker community." "I will continue to support and be an ally." The Oscar live audience then cheered this on. Will we now see a plethora of Hollywood sex worker movies?
(btw I'm not sure how that movie supports sex workers. She is used, and shackled, and screamed at, and dumped and, ends up with a thug who had abused her.)
Thanks to Mick Jagger for taking the time to surprise us and present an Oscar. He looked good for being 81 or so. It was a treat.
Yeah, Anora was as "free" as her circumstances allowed her to be. She has agency, just not full agency.
And Baker makes movies about those people on the fringes of society, always making them fully human and worthy love and respect. I admire that about him.
Apparently I did...which I posted way back when ANORA came out.
I never got the impression that she had any respect for that guy (despite him being sweet on her)....he was just a loser lackey unlike her who had always been her own boss. So that made the ending seem awkward/weird to me. jmho.
I would vote yes for a ZERO ZERO SEVEN female lead... however, not a female Bond.
and she would have to do things in a SMART 'female' manner, not in a leading man manner... gender switching is idiotic.
Mata Hari...

Try and think of it like this...
At the end of The Glass Slipper lore, when the Princely hero gently slips Cinderella's silky naked foot into that hard cold empty glass slipper, we get closer in the form of true love.
A Complete Unknown - Chalamet's performance carries the film because the narrative isn't quite my tempo. The performers all around are terrific, but the story beats felt jarring throughout. This may sound crazy but if we're comparing the genre of "actor gives up multiple years of his life to prepare for a role," I prefer Maestro from top to bottom. This one's a solid 3.5/5, would recommend all day and if it's your top film of the year, I'm happy for you bro. Just wish I saw the same film.
Danny Dyer back with director Nick Love with a new "geezer" movie.
Guess people will either love it or hate it. I'm really looking forward to it.
Watched The Insider, Collateral, and Thief the last few days. Criterion has a collection of Michael Mann films this month.
All great, and I like that Mann can turn The Insider into a thriller.

Agree. I'm a Bob Dylan fan. The movie does a great job of presenting the look of the era. The acting performances are top notch. But the storyline, while true to life, is not the most dramatic to watch and was kind of dull. This was during an era of mass demonstrations against the war, the rise of feminism, marches against racisim, JFK assasination, and the tense Cuban missle crisis which upped the threat of nuclear destruction for all Americans. Bob Dylan was thought of a poet-spokesperson for this counter-culture whether he like it or not. In this movie these exciting events were barely acknowledged. Instead it seemed like one of the most peaceful times in US history.
Just learned Parker Posey turned down the Angelina Jolie role in Girl, Interrupted ; she certainly would’ve been very good at a minimum in it. In a contemporaneous interview she blew it off: “Who cares about depressed white girls in the 60s? What about civil rights?”
Over a decade later she was more vague & wistful: “She won the Oscar, isn’t that funny? (Interviewer was unaware of turndown) I don’t know, maybe they wanted me to audition, jump through hoops, I just wasn’t feeling it, you know?”
She’d complained earlier about a lack of mainstream roles.
Who?
