Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
You should watch The 1984 Bill Forsyth movie, Comfort and Joy. It's about a Scottish DJ who gets involved in a turf war between rival ice cream truck vendors. Not exactly what you're talking about, but similar.
I saw this at the Avon in Providence. I guess that was a long time ago. Highly recommended.

Speaking of shady Disney stuff, years ago my buddy got a hold of a bootleg of Song of the South. It's such a brutal movie, and whether we like it or not is a part of Walt Disney history and it's buried. Wouldn't call it required viewing but it was jaw-dropping and made me appreciate how far we've come, but definitely have a lot of work to do with hatred in this world.
I think it's on archive.org. Might give it a watch sometime soon. I liked the movie but haven't seen it since I was a kid, though I have seen some clips. Is it really hateful? From what I've read, the problems most people have with it are that it misrepresented the post war South and played into stereotypes, but I also get the impression that most people don't see it that way.

The Iraq War?
I remember liking Song Of The South as a kid fifty years ago but thinking it wasn’t remotely on the level of Dumbo, Snow White & Fantasia. It’s like comparing Strawberry Alarm Clock to The Beatles.
Suppressing it gives it a power and mystique it doesn’t deserve.
Sundance Film Festival coming to Boulder in 2027.
If any of you come into town for that, I'm about 20 miles away. Would be up to go for a beer.

Uncle Remus was a lovely guiding hand of Light...

very surprising whenever you post about your age given your username
what were your old accounts?

Comparing it to other Disney IP's doesn't make much sense, even from a 'Straw Man' perspective.
The movie has the ability to stand on it's own from a commercial stand point.
If one finds Song of the South nauseating, Cringe worthy or infuriating... we as individual adults can make up our own minds about 'Merit' and historical significance.
on the simplest of terms, the film exists and is an example of craftsmanship and quality that only Disney could provide during that period... regardless of content.
Disney corrected "dwarfs" to "little people" when it made Darby O'Gill and the Little People.
Definitely PC for its time.

All this Song of the South discussion made me watch it since I had never seen it. I gotta tell you I don't really get the controversy? It seemed perfectly fine to me. Uncle Remus seems more like a role model than a contoversial character. Was it an accurate representation of the post civil war south? Hell no! It was a light hearted musical that touched on some life lessons.
Zippedy Doo Dah!
Darn, Koreans are the absolute best at making Martial Arts movies and it's not even close. Ok, outside of a few American elite boxing narratives, they simply Master the pure popcorn action flicks Think of the Hammer scene in Old Boy (which merits a viewing every few years 😉) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwIIDzrV...
The exquisitely aesthetically pleasing A Bittersweet Life : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5O2tfia...
But the movie that I wanted to mention, and which I watched yesterday, is a great MMA revenge flick ; outside of the engaging narrative, I really appreciate how recent movies have modernized the martial arts, as opposed to the lol Kung fu of yesteryears : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPodnNYy...

It is on Prime btw

I was comparing it from the perspective of a ten year old who liked flying elephants and dancing mops better.
It definitely should not be suppressed.
Death of a Unicorn - About as straightforward as an A24 unicorn movie could be. Noho Hank actor steals every scene he is in and had me cracking up. Poulter was terrific in his role as was Ortega. Pretty solid popcorn movie and better than expected. Nothing special but better than the critics reviews.
Good Lord Return Of The Jedi is awful; 70s TV MOTW bad. No wonder Ford & Fisher were drunk the whole time making it.
Training Day while always rewatchable, makes Collateral seem plausible. LOL Denzel’s Oscar; the best scene in the movie is the only one he’s not in!
Spoiler
Three of a kind beats two pair, Homes

I’m all-in on A24. I just watched Aftersun and Past Lives. Both are great, especially Past Lives.
I just streamed Ran on a smartphone and was stunned by the breadth and majesty of it.
