Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.

Life out of Balance
I've always been pretty stoic (some might say emotionless or whatever's worse). I find, as I age, some simple scenes will make emotions well up. Maybe it's just part of aging.

This talk of the best films of 21 century reminded me of this I keep forgetting to bring up. Do you guys have scenes in perfectly fine movies that just set you off, and ruin it for you.
For me, one was Mad Max: Fury Road. As noted here, in reality a great film. But as I was watching it, there's a scene where (IIRC) Furiosa realizes there's no water. Just more and more desert .
As she's walking away, I'm thinking, "Don't shed your artificial arm, then collapse in grief at the top of the dune. That would be the most hackneyed and trite thing ever."
Sigh.
I just couldn't put that out of my mind.

Gotten a bit dusty a bunch of times as an adult, especially now with nostalgic rewatches; heck, Planes Trains got me as a cynical college punk when it was released.
But Never Let Me Go slaughtered me, both drunk and then sober rewatch, though I saw the KK denouement coming a mile away obviously.
Brian’s Song & Where The Red Fern Grows as a 7yo? Ran out of the theater both times.
No dust but I was surprisingly moved by Brad Pitt’s youthful reveal and Cate Blanchett’s reaction in Benjamin Button.

Yeah, let me see if I can still edit mine and put The Master on instead.
Black Phone isn’t better than Sinners or Let Me In/Let The Right One In but I’m leaving it on because I’m the same age/demographic as the kids, and it’s probably the greatest trailer I’ve ever seen.

That's a good list, Bully, Never Let Me Go was one I had forgotten. Great film. And Michael Clayton, Sideways, and Lost In Translation would definitely make my list another day.

Like the “they all died horribly but are happy together in heaven, maybe I should die too and join them!” crap in Iron Claw and Gladiator?
I understand the vision was lone survivor Kevin’s coping mechanism in Iron Claw and not meant as suicide ideation, but it was a needle scratch for me.
I don’t consider Gladiator an otherwise perfectly fine film.
Didn't put too much thought outside of my absolute favorites: Amelie, Pan's Labyrinth, Wolf of Wall Street:

At the end of HEAT when Neil McCauley said 'I have one more thing to do'... I mean COME ON, really?
or
the end of Collateral when Vincent just forgets all his training and proceeds to white whale some low life cabby on board a metrolink.
aka... pretty much any Michael Mann film at the 9/10's mark of the movie.
I am REALLY surprised that one or two in here haven't put any of these on their TOP TEN of the 21st Century list...

whoa whoa whoa!! What do we expect her to do when she realizes her home and dreams are completely shattered? I thought that made perfect sense and that scene rocks me to my core every time. Fury Road is perfect.
Because I loved my wife.

hammer on the head, sir. And I'm so sorry for your loss. Mortality is something I battle with every day. I've had many loved ones and acquaintances pass away around me due to various health complications, horrible accidents, etc. Not to sound too cliche, but every day feels like a gift. I try to be conscious of that, if only for the ppl who aren't with me today.
Having a family the traditional way isn't possible for me and my wife because we recently discovered I'm shooting blanks. Something I wish we looked into years ago, it just never dawned on us. My wife reassured me she would do it all over again and I have to agree with her. Our love is so strong that when I see it reflected in the art I consume, I can't help but fall in love with that film: Arrival being one of them.

Right, that's kinda the point. In the moment, it just hit me wrong; not that it's wrong within the context of the film.
Of course, I'm not 10% the movie watcher that you guys are, noticing details and angles and so on. I found the discussion of eye lines a couple months ago fascinating, for example. Never would've occurred to me.
At a brief glance I’m putting Arrival & Mandy at the top of my list.
It would seem that if I loved Joe I should probably at least like Mandy; was the reverse true for anyone?

I did see Koyaanisqatsi in a theater. The Philip Glass score is a favorite
