Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
I went to Ireland for St. Patrick's Day. Kind of a letdown.

Well, it was 2020, so there's that. Still enjoyed my time, just didn't get to see much.
Watched the Peaky Blinders film, found it kinda meh overall and not a patch on the actual show itself.
I didn't fully understand what was going on in Project Hail Mary at times. They cram in a lot of sciency stuff at high speed. Still quite fun though. It can be enjoyed as a 'human meets cute alien' ET type movie, although there is more to it than that. Gosling is charming, Sandra Huller is predictably excellent The line about the aliens not understanding radiation or relativity
The book makes that bit more believable I think. It's an important plot point and it's why Rocky has so much astrophage it could go back and lend some (because the travel time took less astrophage than predicted since they hadn't taken relativity into account).

Way too long. Here's a note for PTA. If a car chase scene is just going down a straight road. It doesn't need to be 3 minutes long. No one was likeable except for maybe Willa and the Sensei. Also, I'm supposed to be believe that

A generous 5/10 for some of the performances.

Had Predator Badlands on as I graded papers....saw it before and thought it was great. Now, I think it's the best Predator movie, by far...so damn entertaining, with elite FX, wonderful story, great fights and creepy creatures....and I loved the choreographed fight between one synth and Elle Fanning's cut in half body lol. So creative.
The setup for Predator Badlands got me super emotional. I'm very close to my younger brother, it was easy to feel for the brothers in that moment. I was actually pretty sick when I watched it and had to stop halfway through, really need to go back and watch it.

Somewhere out there must be people who think Godfather Part III is the best of the trilogy. Tolerance of diverse opinions can only go so far.
Enjoyed Badlands, but the overly predictable plot and emotional beats reduced the dramatic tension. Brother's death, vengeance, rejecting then bonding with android and cute alien - all obvious from the moment the characters make their appearance.

Badlands is an enjoyable action film. It lacks Prey's sense of menace, but it's a fun flick.

I watched this scene several times before I realized that Lady Kaede doesn’t bring a knife to meet with Jiro. She simply grabs his short sword and starts slashing. Compared to 1961’s West Side Story, the knife fight is more stylized, and yet more brutally realistic -- due in part to the cringing, crying behavior of the fight’s only male participant.

In the most powerful scene in all Shakespeare, Lady Kaede throws off her Lady Macbeth disguise and reveals herself as Lady Snowblood:

Lady Akane is the greatest female role in cinema, perhaps the greatest of any role in cinema. She doesn’t have a Lawyer Dagget behind her -- she's all alone in enemy territory -- a little girl -- completely surrounded by those that killed her family. And she does have her day! When Ran was released, it would have been better titled Lady Kaede.
Kurosawa’s homage to Lady Snowblood. A bunch of disgusting people behaving in appallingly human ways. No one does Medieval like Kurosawa. No one does Humanity so well. Check it out!

hahahahaha....the papers I make my students write now are all broken down into processes they have to do to show they are actually writing and annotating and outlining and, you know, actually THINKING. Not just spitting out a fully formed AI paper.

I haven't seen Ran since it came out....was one of the best theater-going experiences I've ever had. Haven't seen it since because I didn't want ot ruin it lol. I may have to fix that.

I don't know. Sometimes I wish I could watch this on the full screen again. I remember watching it when it came out and feeling physically buffeted by the action onscreen. If you have any chance to see a revival, I'd say wait.
I'm always trying to get people to watch Seven Samurai in a theater. It becomes a completely different movie.
