Crime and Punishment

I'm not sure and can't look it up right now but I doubt any state allows parents to give kids the right to walk around the house with handguns. In fact in some states if a kid finds a handgun under the bed or someplace and shoots someone the parent is charged with negligence of some sort just for allowing a kid access to a handgun without the parents permission.

dont be fooled into thinking that's not part of a very significant change of wind in the justice system.

the only thing youre right about is that they dont receive death sentences anymore, the parole part is debatable.

14 year olds don't go to adult prisons. 16 year olds sometimes do.

idk. maybe 14 was too risky for an adult male prison.

It's a bit of abuse of language because there's no guarantee of release and you are still subject to the sentence after release from prison.

You misunderstood his post. He said 25 years was 25 years, not that life was 25 years.

I'd prefer the more correct philosophical answer but on this occasion I think it would be untrue. 25 years is life for a 14 (or 16) year old. 10 years probably is as well

No. It's 25 years. It might seem like life at sentencing, but it certainly won't if/when he gets out at 35-40 and gets to start over. There are plenty of people in the US serving natural life who have been locked up since the 70s and 80s and have basically lived their whole adult life in prison. That's a life sentence. 25 years is not a life sentence. Some of the youtubers I watch have got out after serving 25-35 years on a life sentence, and trust me, they will tell you that 25, even 35 years is not life.

It should be true that 25 years is life because engilsh law is based on personhood not on the physical body. That person is long dead and buried.

Unfortuantely I dont think that is the reason that the average sentence served for life in the uk is less than 20 years. At least not the concious reason. It may underpin the reason why parole boards come to the conclusion that enough time has passed even if they don't realise it.

I think anyone locked in a high security prison would be a very different person after just one year, but that doesn't mean a 1 year prison sentence should be considered a life sentence.
