The Box of Chocolates Thread (You never know what you're going to get!)
Welcome to the General Discussion thread. If you have a topic that doesn't warrant its own thread, post it here. Have a free form discussion going that no longer fits in the original thread? It may be moved here to give it a place to wander. Also, general chit chat is welcome!
I scored Sats for college board in 2012. You were told to take off a point for grammar if they was used singularly. That's a fact
That's actually interesting and seems true more recently than 2012 too. Here is a good illustration of why it is silly but that you are indeed right: https://gablestutoring.com/the-path-to-c.... Although then with a few more links, nothing completely clear, it sounds like maybe this is something they just don't assess any longer: https://twitter.com/CollegeBoard/status/...
Lately, one such battle has been unfolding around the legitimacy of the singular they. Few institutions representing grammatical or linguistic authority over the English language insist on maintaining “they” as a plural pronoun only. The Oxford and Merriam-Webster dictionaries, for example, both accept the usage of “they” as a non-binary, singular, third-person pronoun. Singular “they” (as well as the objective form “them,” the possessive forms “their/theirs,” and the reflexive forms
How does someone who apparently makes money tutoring kids get away with calling "them" the "objective form". I have at least heard "possessive" used before, but the terms are accusative and genitive.

It's another word for the same thing but I'm more familiar with the term objective.
MLA and APA style guides both improve of the singular they
Generic Use
They is also used “as a generic third-person singular pronoun to refer to a person whose gender is unknown or irrelevant to the context,” as the seventh edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association attests (120). This use of singular they, until very recently discouraged in academic writing and other formal contexts, allows writers to omit gendered pronouns from a sentence like the following:
Each taxpayer must file his or her tax return before 15 April.
Instead, writers may substitute singular they:
Each taxpayer must file their tax return before 15 April.
Because it lacks grammatical agreement, this use of singular they has been considered a less desirable option than revising to use the plural or rephrasing without pronouns. But it has emerged as a tool for making language more inclusive (see “Guidelines”), and the MLA encourages writers to accept its use to avoid making or enabling assumptions about gender.

Chicago Manual of style is still trying to fight it but seem to be giving in
No one , including me wants to talk about it more, but obviously I was referring to the Overland Park discussion.
We should move onto Lenexa and Shawnee.
I like Overland Park because it's older and the neighborhoods have nice trees, but if you want that real suburban feel with real suburban bigotry, you have to go to Shawnee.
Johnson county is blue even.

shawnee and lenexa are historically and continue to be less bigoted than their southern neighbors, op and olathe.
You’re talking about a place that voted for trump in 2016, all gop candidates before then and has made national news in regards to repeated death threats against jews and gays who lived there , some of which were followed through on.
I think this is commendable, but the bigger question is- whence does Johnny hail? You need to give some background on this random nee character you just introduced into conversation..
Question for the space man. Every other girl likes to have her hair pulled and to be called a slut. Well not "a" slut, "your" slut. Well, eventually.

A place that barely voted for Trump and didn't in 2020.

Obviously op isn’t one of the places i’d normally avoid in the original joke because i choose to live here, although my primary residence is now my bfs place in leawood. This is a hypothetical small town in west kansas and johnny is a cowboy.
what were social relationships like for gay men in overland park in the early 2000’s. O wait they were illegal and anyone caught in one was harassed by the police and community roll eyes

The first county in Kansas where gay people could legally married was ......wait for it .....Johnson county

Yes, because there are a lot of wealthy people here and public services are well funded so they responded quickest to the supreme court order legalizing gay marriage in 2015. There was no marriage before then.
Bryce you live in a literal gay mecca and if your boyfriend is in Leawood you must live in a mansion as well.
Ah, from an extremely lame attempt to discredit SB's knowledge of Kansas politics, to an in-depth Kansas voting analysis. Luckbox bringing the on-topic quality posting to the moderation thread! 🙄
