Favorite Stand Up Comics

I couldn't find another thread about just stand up comedy, if it should be moved, so be it.

Just wanted to see who everyone likes. The usuals I'm sure will pop up, but any smaller comics or more obscure would be fun to find too.

A couple of my favorite bits:

so i've never heard of jeff dunham in my life - like i've heard the name but it was always obscure and i couldn't tell you the first thing about him

he's absolutely beloved here in the ozarks

so i'm hanging out with some people and they start talking about bubba j, i have absolutely no idea what they are talking about and they are like "omg you need to watch jeff dunham"

low and behold, it's a ventriloquist act

while i can appreciate his talent, you'd have no idea he's voicing them and each one of h

that goober was in town just on Friday, I thought he was amusing the first time I saw him 20 years ago,but his folksy schtick got old fast.
Gotta admit his ventriloquist skills are good.

Oh man Neil Hamburger

Faith No More sent him out as the opening act just to **** with people I'm pretty sure. He had exactly one good joke and told so horribly it somehow worked

Q: What do you get when you shove a penny up the ass of each member of SmashMouth? [I think it was Smashmouth]
A: Nickelback

It's possible that this guy was two levels above me and the rest of the crowd but Jesus

It's anti-comedy. In the early days no one got the act and he was constantly heckled, which was subtly encouraged. Over time more people got in on it and it has made the experience less enjoyable. Saw him back in October and he played to a full house (450) and it played like a normal stand up show. No heckling and people were laughing at the jokes. I also feel he's toned down the offensive nature of the jokes a bit.

New Chappelle is great. Comes out the gate swinging hard for quite a bit.

I was like "holy ****" after the first bit, then was underwhelmed the rest of the way.

I thoroughly enjoyed the cleverness but just not many lol moments

Everyone I know thought it was terrible, but they also thought his previous ones were terrible (and I enjoyed some of those). So I came into this one totally ready to love it.

Sorry, it was terrible. 15 minutes of good stuff, maybe.

This man is definitely in the "likes the smell of his own farts" phase of his comedy. He's now so far behind his peak and his peers it's stunning to me.

I enjoyed it alot more than his last few.

How can he not like the smell of his own farts. People talk about him like he’s a deity. Don’t get me wrong the Chapelle show is elite. About as good as sketch comedy gets.

I just really haven’t enjoyed any of his Netflix specials over the last ~5years.

Maybe I’m tainted because I despise Joe Rogan, and he definitely has pushed Chappelle into some type of god for his audience of idiots.

The problem I have with Dave is he no longer focuses on comedy for the sake of being funny. Most of his stuff in recent years has been more political or centered more towards the controversies surrounding him, which is understandable.

There was a time when I thought he was the best of the best but now I think there's several people that have surpassed him when it comes to pure stand up comedy. He's still elite status because he's earned it but I'd really like to see him go back to his roots and just do pure stand up.

this

he tries to talk politics and about how and what people need but he's lost proper perspective to be able to do that properly because he's lived in the chappelle bubble for the last few decades

absolutely love the guy, listend to his standup all through college all the time

i've watched half baked more than perhaps any other movie

i was there for the cultural zeitgeist that was the chappelles show, was going to school in dc at the time and distinctly recall watching the new episode and then going out later that night and drunk people would be screaming lines from that night's show on the sidewalks and everyone else giving thunderous approval

i remember trying to order something at the bar and if the bartender couldn't hear you, you'd yelll "What?" and then he'd just respond with "OK!" and then you'd both be laughing about it and he'd literally just guess what you wanted and give your round on the house because the moment was so great that you wouldn't even want to ruin it by going back to the original conversation of "what do you want to drink"

it was so bad that I actually begin to exploit that, every time i went to a new bar, no matter what, I'd yell "what?" in the littlejohn voice just hoping it elicited that same free round montage again and it genuinely worked often enough that it became my things and it worked all semester - was deeply saddened when it stopped being a magical formula to unlock free drinks and just became me loudly imitating a now scale comedy bit that everyone was sick of

like we have an entire generation for which all discussions of couches will elicit this image

never seen anything like that, where anything in our culture had such a dominant grip on day to day living and interactions of people

as big as taylor swift is today (and i don't think there's ever been anyone more famous than she is right now) she never had the kind of direct influence on people's interactions the way Chappelle did when chappelles show was live

dave will always have a special place in my heart, i'm always going to listen to everything he has to say, but his recent stuff has been interesting, but not really funny, just the intersting quips of someone's perspective from a bubble that i could never possibly envision living within

Both nick mullen and Ricky gervais specials are very solid

Thought the Ricky Gervais one was weak sauce. Similar to Chapelle, he seems to care more about being edgy and offensive more than actually telling funny jokes.

Agreed. His is comedy just to offend cancel culture.

Watched the first 15 minutes of the new Gervais special, didn't crack a smile once. Nothing but hackey unoriginal whining about "wokesters." It was like a long winded facebook post from your cranky old uncle who's rustled about kids these days.

I was and still am a huge fan of The Office and Extras. Sad to see yet another great unique comedy career falling apart.

Who do we have left over 40 who hasn't turned into a crabby old hack who thinks nonstop unfunny whining about wokesters and cancel culture is edgy and cool? Brian Regan?

Jimmy Carr was funny to me on the UK show clips I'd seen, but holy ****, his standup is horrendous.

mate of mine saw him standing in line at a polling booth some years ago waiting to vote, and apparently jimmy caught the eye of some official and loudly requested to be escorted to the VIP area. have always liked him since hearing that

+1 for stavvy baby

TIL that John Mulaney is 41 years old

Best stand up special I've seen in a LONG TIME!

key to ball grooming is to trim back your hair on your thighs and stomach in a gradient so there's a gradual transition to shorn

having said that, 1 minute in and i don't think this guy is for me

ok i'm really glad i powered through it, he really starts hitting a good rhythm about half an hour in

still not a fan of the first half though

some good crowd work mixed in their @fossil

I'll give it a watch, thanks.

My latest crowd work obsession is Phil Hanley. This guy is just so good at it, surprised he was only mentioned once and several years ago.

Been watching Tosh Show podcast on YT and that's pretty good also. Just interviews random people from his life, but Tosh is such a pro they're almost always good episodes.

David Cross has a new podcast as well. It’s called “Senses Working Overtime” and it’s really good. I think there’s been 6 episodes. Bob Odenkirk was the first, then Jason Bateman, followed by Steve-O, and the latest 2 were Marc Maron and Janeane Garofalo.

Most of it follows the standard podcast format but depending on the guest, it often becomes a “yes, and” masterclass. Especially with the 4th guest, which I didn’t mention above. Her name is Jo Firestone and I’ve never seen or heard of her before the episode. It was 80 minutes of off the cuff improv and neither of them broke. It’s was kind of amazing. I kept waiting for it to “start” because the beginnings of the first episodes did the same. But it kept going. And going. And going. It’s one of those things where it won’t be for most people, but if it is for you, you’ll love it!

Just got back into Ross Noble after hearing him killing it on a podcast. Quite a view of specials are on YT.

Typical show - 1min of prepared story, 10min of Ross getting distracted and going off on a random tangent. Also, you may need subtitles.

I always liked him and I’m enjoying his podcast on YT. I thought the most recent one with his stylist was entertaining; there’s something endearing about her.

That was brootally boring to me, I powered thru it because you said it picked up the second half.

I don't feel the same way.
