Nothing about what Washington did and the recruiting competence Washington had on the strength of what they pulled off gives me the impression he can hang in the sec

He's got an eye for talent and is a darned good offensive mind. How that translates to a better league like the SEC, I dunno. Will probably depend a lot on who he hires as assistants. Get the right ones and keep the boosters happy and pretty much a muppet *could* be successful

Heavy rich rod vibes

Feel like it’s not a great sign that the guy he beat twice in the same year was a bigger target for Bama.

lanning had those previous ties to bama and georgia though
but in reality it was part of the jimmy sexton process

I know this isn’t your first coaching carousel.

It was always DeBoer for Bama. But Sexton did a great job getting all his other clients raises before the contracts were finalized.

Huskies fans are super salty that the coach they poached after two years at Fresno State left them after two years.

I must have missed where he made the national championship game at Fresno.

I think the problem is that Alabama falls much more into the category of "Has good but not untouchable natural advantages" and sky high expectations.

The only two programs that in today's Era will succeed no matter who is in charge are Ohio State and LSU. There I'd a huge advantage to being the only game in town in a talent rich state.

SEC Crootin is such a different competitive animal that I could see DeBoer struggle to keep up. I don't think the Alabama brand by itself lands you a top 5 class year after year, especially if he gets branded as an "all offense" guy and all of a sudden all those defensive prospects from the southeast decide they're better off going somewhere else.

And players transferring out. Disaster for UW.

I do think Bama made the best move they can make. He's certainly got a big fighting chance. Not sure his northwestern laid back lovey dovey mind set is ready to be burned in effigy when you lose a game unexpectedly. It might be too vicious for his taste if he's not winning the SEC and bidding for the title. He's obviously a special coach. Good move. Drama ahead.

Dude at the gas station tonight said he thought I was Jim Harbaugh when I walked in. Just got a short haircut yesterday, was wearing a blue cap and had glasses on from driving ... I think there probably is a strong resemblance. He says Harbaugh is going to the pros, not staying in place, and another suspension in the offing if he comes back. His two cents, everybody has at least two cents.

I can't think of a better place to recruit than UGa. They may not get a lot of LA guys, but they get players up and down the east coast along with most of the south + Texas. They were #2 last year and are currently #1 this year. That includes rolling out a dog**** coach like Kirby Smart.

Carroll went 170-120 in the pros, had a .600 win% over 14 seasons with the Seahawks, of course won one Super and runner up in the next. He called a pass play, or let somebody call it, at the 1-yard line with 25 seconds left with Marshawn on the roster costing him back-to-back Supers, with a QB that had just thrown 4 picks in the conference championship and somehow survived it. A big candidate for the worst call of all times. Could have been the only coach with two Supers and two NCAA titles. (So

I’d love to see what Pete Carroll could do for about 5 years. Yeah, he’s also 72, but has always seemed young/energetic.

Maybe Pete Carroll could coach the New England Patriots.

by Zimmer4141 k

This feels extremely high variance but very interesting.

There's potential for it to be (on-field wise) Urban Meyer at Ohio State or Rich Rodriguez at Michigan.

RRod; turned Alabama down?

Lmao at this random ass stereotype. DeBoer is a stone cold killer. The most unflappable coach I’ve ever seen on the sideline. Viciousness will not be his issue.

The question marks for DeBoer at Alabama:

-UW was 8-0 in one score games this year.No matter how good of a leader and coach you are that’s not sustainable. DeBoer’s track record at this level is very short and it’s likely that sample size contained significant positive variance.Would Bama have hired him if he finished 12-2?
-DeBoer has never built a roster at the FBS level. He left Fresno and UW each after just two years. And has left a smoking wreckage at UW due to subpar recruiting and roster management. He basically won with a generational combination of 4th-6th year guys most of whom were recruited by previous coaches with Penix added through the portal.

I think there is a good chance DeBoer is an elite coach. But no doubt the road would have been a lot tougher at UW next year and we would have found out a lot more about him.

Good points. I wonder if Bama felt they needed a "name" to stop transfers , and to ensure Bama could maintain the Saban era recruitment, with the whole "we replaced Saban with a NC winning coach" . But, interesting that DeBoer has no track record of working with what "he" built, and the season he had this year is unrepeatable if you roll the dice 100 times. Bama must know that and feel the supporting coaching staff is strong..

I think if I was him I would have leveraged the offer into staying where he was with a long term contract and a new-found ability to recruit. Reading the whole "I just got my dream job" when you just won the NC is a bit lame imo. Man, you are in your dream job, and with a program that could go 9-3 next year and not want to throw you to the wolves.... because it is Washington, and not Bama, or Georgia, etc...

Enjoy the $$$ I guess..

Hearing strong Pete Carroll rumors. Kalen who?

you do realize washington lost to michigan, correct?

you do realize washington lost to michigan, correct?

I thought I did, but apparently I invented a different outcome...lol

He's already vacated the national title in his mind.

I don't think DeBoer will work out, on further review. Signs already. Carroll would have been an awesome hire, though it couldn't be long term. Would have been last hurrah and a damn good one.

Washington is hiring Jedd Fisch from Arizona.

Arizona is now on the clock!

Apparently DeBoer was making a little over 4 million per at UW, and they offered to double it to keep him. His happiness quotient there by all accounts on a scale of 1-100 was about 120. What in the world is Bama paying him to tempt him to become yet another football mercenary? Guessing about 9 million?? I think he'll look back on the decision like, "What was I thinking?" I guess maybe if his game plan is about Nattys like he did at the other level, he made a good move. Bama isn't a lovey dovey place. Get ready for it.

Chargers met with Harbaugh already.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/3930...

It’s obvious but if he wants an NFL gig he can have one.

let the harbaugh to dallas rumors start

any speculation regarding debore to bama should acknowledge the red tide didn't find out same time we did
that contract was being negotiated at least a week prior, if not more

Saban retired. Bama steals Washingtons coach. Washington steals Arizonas coach. Wonder where this finally ends and just how many programs lose a coach due to Saban retiring?

Fisch is a great hire for ewwdub only if he can bring Fifita with him
