90% of Players? Whats your best Story?

I once made second and sixth in a 530$ multi-entry 10-game for $15k, but then lost my Share and more to blue carpet on full tilt at mostly 10/20 Mixed...

I forget where I read or saw it but someone said that in the hayday of online poker the pros would sit higher stakes the Sunday night after the $215 milly would end and wait for the winner to come dust it all off 😃 Apparently it happened more than once

in dfs it was really common for people who shipped a big tourney to now believe this was their moment, they finally had the roll to do this professionally and crush people as obviously demonstrated by the fact that they just won a 100k 1st place prize

they'd lose heavily for a few days booking all the big contests and h2hs and then you'd never see them again, not even in their large contest haunts

losing tens of thousands over a couple of days when you usually played about $25 a night will help remove all illusions that you're a crusher

binked sunday millions

Looks like my graph. Minus the giant spike, of course.

I remember a story way back about Steve Sung. He got 4th in some big WPT tourney for like almost 400k and was so tilted from busting that he dusted it off immediately at blackjack like right after the tourney.

I remember when guys use to do this stuff. They have a big score in a MTT and then think they are going to switch to heads up sng play for high stakes and only have to beat one player. Except that one player they would end up playing at $5,000 a sng was legend Dan "mrgr33n13" Colman who was winning a million+ a year at hu sng.

teddybloat's example will be hard to beat. In fact, if there was a way to chart Jamie Gold's poker trajectory, would it not look something like that?

Hell, my first steps in poker were a miniscule version of this.

1. Deposited $100 on PokerRoom
2. Won a $20 SNG (first poker tourney of any kind that I ever played) to double my balance.
3. Withdrew the initial $100, leaving only the profit on the account.
4. Jumped immediately into 50NL games and $50 SNGs, thinking I was actually good.
5. Ran everything up to around $500 before beginner's luck wore off and/or variance did its job.

I don't remember the exact figures, there was a point when I had something like $210 left and I entered a $100 MTT. That's how little I knew about BRM. It wasn't until after I busted that I learned about that concept, how even good players can experience sizable downswings, etc. Insert facepalm meme here.

Fortunately, I learned these lessons with what was little more than beer-and-pizza money, as I can't imagine if I had done that with any remotely meaningful amount. Others – like teddybloat's example – find out the much, much harder way.

I assume some version of what the OP is talking about happens all the time, which is why tournaments are so good for the overall poker economy. With a low barrier for entry with a high possible upside, they bring in amateur donks like myself in ways cash games probably can't. Then a bunch of money gets stuffed into the pockets of a small few, with a higher likelihood that a) the winner is a total degen, or b) the winner is a weaker player who just happened to hit a rush at the right time. And a) and b) will put that money back in play very quickly.

Whats up mate? Long time no speak. I seem to recall that. You were like hey mate i came into some money lets go to this festival and get ****ed up, all on me.

Never happened though. now i know why.

That Sunday millon graph is insane. I mean atleast he donked off the profits instead of his income/networth...
Story behind is prolly something along the lines of "I'll play a couple, get roll to 150-160k", lose couple, go on a massive tilt and pump it all.

If you look closely there is a big score in there somewhere

Overplayed word now, every kid is saying epic now with no vocabulary. Dwight pilgrim, and that guy who won money who grew up in Santa Barabara comes to mind.

Thank you for clarifying but that is the nickname of Josh Beckley who got 2nd in one of the larger mains for like 7 million and started playing 50ks and was broke in no time

I won a 4$ 215 man on stars to start my journey and proceeded to punt it all off + like 10x more.

Then I deposited 15$ and ran that up to a multi-year .50/1 full ring career
