SIDES - Inaugural Game Thread
In this thread, we will play a new word game called Sides. It's somewhat similar to codenames, but cooperative and different.
Sign up with /in below if you want to play.
In this game, a target word will be randed as will a row of 7 cards that have letters on them (most 1 letter, some 2/3/4 letters).
2 people will be the guessers and everyone else will be able to give a clue.
The clue given must start with the letter on either the first or last card (the 'sides' of the row).
We discuss as a team who will give the clue with open discussion in the thread such as "I have a 7 letter word starting with a C"
Once there is some agreement on who gives the clue, that person will bold the clue they want to give in the thread.
The two guessers will then discuss in the thread and bold their guess. If it's correct, we move on to the next guessers and the next word. If wrong, then the clue givers post some info like "you are warm" or "you are about 30% there" etc to give directional info on how on track/off track their guess is.
Then they discuss and give another clue. But the person who bolded a clue cannot give another clue for the same word until everyone on the cluing side has clued a word (if we take that long to get the word), so one person can't hog the cluing.
Clues have to be one word, or an acronym, etc like in codenames; they can be hyphenated words
We can also give some info on how the clues relate to each other, or even say a clue is a 0 clue, so the opposite of what cluing for (e.g., clue 'colorful' as an opposite clue because the word is zebra)
I'll provide more details and examples in the thread in the morning, but this should be enough info for you to /in and join so we can play.

this post is exactly why I wanted China so much...but we can only give feedback on how close their guess is, not their discussion
otherwise I would have given feedback on that post as 90% there or something
the whole reason I kept saying I wanted China penultimate clue at latest was because I thought he may go panda first before going [redacted]
yeah, lucky was a great confirmer if they thought of it
the problem with this word is it's hard to get someone to think about it in the first place
once you think about it, all the clues make sense
also, these are mostly NOT deciduous, but rather evergreen; there are a few varieties that are semi-deciduous or deciduous
Here's the cards we started with.
S | DL | DL | C | IH
Desiduous is a type of tree that loses its leaves in the fall. I can't believe that the answer is "tree". There have to be better clues than "shoots" if the answer is "tree". Can it be a type of a tree? It's not maple. Syrup would have been the opening clue. Oak? Pine? Could it be something like "Jungle"? I still don't have an answer that pops out at me.
what kind of tree is known for having shoots?

yeah; deciduous got them to tree and it could have gotten them to the trees that have shoots; was a fine shot and I don't have a better d clue so I was good with it...just pointing out that it turns out they mostly aren't
Bamboo isn't a tree either lol.
Ya know ive still got no idea what the answer is
....is it bamboo?
I didnt realise lucky bamboo is a thing
Congratulations to us for being pretty good at this game! Rerand order and deck and go again?
yeah
bamboo isn't usually deciduous and isn't technically a tree
but it could have gotten them to think about bamboo when combined with shoots
unfortunately, they went away from their panda line of thinking and it's just a tough word that doesn't often come up as something you think of, so really tough to get it to pop into their head
Game One Complete
We got 15 words with the 26 cards
According to the rule book, that is the 3rd place BIG trophy!
The rule book only goes to 17 points as max score, so we did very well
Game 2

d1
ervin
ibd
nich
bolt
filthy
dr zeus
If anybody else wants to join, just let us know and we can add you in there. If anybody needs to drop, let us know.
We’re #3!
Round 1:
Cards used: 0
Guessers: d1/ervin
The Board:
JOVW | RG | EF | B | A | S | UNKQ
The target word:
i've pmed it to ibd/filthy/bolt/zeus
o3 more than w10, but w10 gets in right domain faster
don't have a homerun clue yet for the side words, tho I have an s I love (won't say # of letters yet in case we want to avoid that this game for interior letters)

I haven't thought about any clues yet, but as far as interior letter rules, let's allow discussion of the two outer groups of letters on each side. In other words, EF & B are off limits, but we can discuss the rest of the board.
Yeah I like that because the words next to the outside are important as we may want to get to them for turn 1
s9 is likely to get them there imo
We needed a p card so we could clue panda
O3>W10, for sure. But then what? RG isn’t a blessing of a card. There’s an R9 and G8 that are fine, but not likely to get there, more just kind of what W10 would clarify.
Ah!
K5 then s9 gets it I think
Does anybody know k5 or s9 tho?
K5 is like w6 or v7 or o7
