Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
I love a few good men have seen it a million times will probably watch it a million more.
I’m doing preproduction for my next movie: A Few Good Women. Phat Mac is writing the script.
Truth is boring and redundant, lies are what drives civilization into fun times and makes life worthwhile.
Zeno really thinks he's clever, doesn't he?
I could make the best movies ever made in two hours of visceral horror and sin. But you pansies of slobbering “ I’m saving that universe for mankind” ruin everything!!
the amount of parodies of this line for a few years after the movie came out...too many to count. Basically any time a store was running a special, we would get a Jack Nicholson impersonator in a commercial saying something like this "You want deals....you can't handle the deals" 🙄
THE ZONE OF INTEREST: Others above me have reviewed this and I have nothing to add other than I agree with their comments. Probably a movie that most people would be bored by in this day and age. But it managed to hold my attention all the way thru. It is sort of like a combo of being a fly on the wall at a particular moment in history and watching a car wreck...it isn't entertaining or pleasant but you can't take your eyes off of it.
Of note, the German actors playing the leads were great especially when there were bouncing off each other. But I do have questions that I have found no answers for online so maybe one of you has an answer:
A while back, there was a discussion of favorite vs best films. I'm in the camp of having pretty pedestrian tastes in movies. My 'favorites' vary by mood, what's actually on, etc.
Last night, on consecutive channels, were The Usual Suspects and Animal House. Two really different movies, but two of my faves.
for the life of me... I just do not get all the love for The Usual Suspects. I can tolerate it, and I might even be able to make it all the way thru the movie, but I find the characters unbelievable and miscast. I might give a pass on the writing, but not with that cast.
probably just a difference in taste/preferences.
Now Animal Haus on the other hand... perfection.
Argylle makes The Beekeeper look like a masterpiece.
Must be pretty terrible if that cast can't salvage it slightly...
Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O'Hara, Henry Cavill, Sofia Boutella, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson.
Mathew Vaughn is the Zack Snyder of Michael Bays
Bryce Dallas Howard - not a fan at all
Sam Rockwell - best part of movie
Bryan Cranston - wasted
Catherine O’Hara - kinda cringe
Henry Cavill - kinda dumb kinda funny
Sofia Boutella - whatever
Dua Lipa - barely in it
Ariana DeBose - didn’t recognize her but now that I know: wasted
John Cena - always fun
SLJ - fine? / wasted
Showed In the Mood for Love tonight in my class. I told them they could leave when it was over or stick around and talk about it. Not one student left. And I was amazed how much they picked up on in one viewing.
I like this class.
