The Bangles, Bananarama, and Berlin are not. I'm trying to think of other bands with a female vocalist around the early 80s.
Fleetwood Mac is in the HOF, obviously. So is Heart.

The problem with this question is I don't know if it helps us in our search. Let's say that we know that it's definitively one of the first 3 tracks of an album, are we any closer to figuring out where to look next?
This also ignores the possibility that the song was never on an album or the complication that the same album can have different track listings in the US and UK as an example.
I was thinking finding out if it's an all-female band might be the way to go, but I haven't checked to see what would fit one way or the other.
"Sex (I'm a...) by Berlin was on an album released in 1982, but the actual single didn't come out until 1983. Not sure how he would handle something like that.
Free clarification maybe?
In this circumstance, would you have said the year of the album or if the single?
Bananarama released a cover of "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" in 1983 and it went to number 101 on the Billboard chart.
I've actually never heard their version, but of course I know the original 1969 version by Steam.

While I think the song will be familiar at least, I doubt the band name would.
also, there are other billboard charts/rankings other than US top 40 Billboard or US top100 Billboard......just saying genre might be something to think about based on where you all are.
Oh... Well I wouldn't know many songs from that time period that wouldn't be considered rock, or at least crossing over to the main Billboard chart.
Good lord, are we looking for a country song?
I looked at a list of the top 100 country songs of 1982,nothing seemed to fit.
Official Video has over 60M views... not a country song. More popular in Europe than US. Still going to be hard to nail down.

"hot black singles" is what the chart was actually called in 1982. Wikipedia gives the chart positions with the current name.
