Hmmm - no bourbon thread?
my body really isn't recovering as well as it used to after scotch, so I've started dipping my toe into Bourbon waters. It's very early days, but so far I've not only enjoyed my dalliances but I've woken up a lot less dusty.
So I'm after recommendations. My standard $$ range for scotch is $70-110 Aus (which in Oz terms is Glenlivet 12 up to Aberlour/Balvenie 12), so think along similar price lines.
To date, my favourite of the ones I've tried is clearly Woodford Reserve. A clear second is Buffalo Trace and a distant third was the Wild Turkey Longbranch.
where should I go next?
They comin after Fireball and Crown Peach.
When I was a lad the sugar loaded starter alcohol of choice was 99 Bannanas/Oranges/Strawberries which I believe was 50%. Think I would still throw up reflexively if I ever smelled that again.
I think the question will also depend if you are mixing spirits vs. having them neat. Mixing them with caffeinated or sugary drinks is going to leave you either not being able to get to sleep as easy or if you wake up in the middle of the morning not being able to get back to sleep as easy. Beer generally has a much better effect of sending you to sleep (including on the couch - haha).
We can set up some parameters.
Yeah, I don’t mix scotch or bourbon with anything.
Definitely drinking nothing is the best way to get a better sleep. Then…sometimes I seem to manage to find a good sleep despite drinking, other times not so much. I think it depends what’s on my mind and how things are going.
I mean…I always slept better after a poker win than a big loss for similar reasons
You down for this experiment?

If it were 50% it would be called 100 Bananas. The only one that's remotely palatable is the peanut butter flavor.
Haha. Just had 99 Bananas on Saturday. It's fine if you have it as your first shot and it is straight from the freezer. Most of the other 99s are terrible though.
That and Rump I'll buy since the airplane bottles are a dollar.
Likely you're just consuming more alcohol, unless you're measuring your drinks and doing napkin algebra while drinking to ensure you're consuming the same amount of alcohol when drinking wine, whiskey, or beer.
Your sleep is being affected whether you think it is or not. How do you think you're getting good sleep when your liver is metabolizing a bunch of booze while you're sleeping?
Also, as you're aware, alcohol is a depressant so it makes sense why when you consume large amounts that your mind
not for me right now. Going through a marriage separation so trying not to drink at all and…rather a lot more on my mind than usual so conditions aren’t ideal
Maybe down the track and I’ll follow the results with interest if anyone else does it
(Also, I live in the developed world so oz, pints, quarts, gallons etc aren’t legal tender)

All the best and looking forward to your return to drinking 😀
All the best to you feelie, I know this had been stressing you for some time.
Probably a good idea to cut back on the drinking for now, life doesn’t get any easier with less mental clarity and ability to focus.

Sorry to hear that, man. Good luck with all that. Be well.
I poured a little sip out of my half-full infinity bottle and so far it is less than the sum of its parts :(
Sucked in by the Costco “One per membership”…hope it’s good [emoji23]

guys, this thread is worth opening from a bourbon POV. Scroll back about 10 days and you can read the OP's trip report of a 4 day bourbon tour in Kentucky and there's some interesting and fun chat
and it's also worth going back and reading from the beginning as it's one of the very best threads on two plus two and you'll read the aspirational story of a high stakes video poker enthusiast's regular comped Vegas trips and stays at the Wynn
The general consenus is that it was a great value ~10 yrs ago when it was under $30. At 60 or more, there are generally better options. A victim of the bourbon boom.
And yeah, I agree, inconsistent now.
It was $55 at the local Costco and I enjoyed it. Definitely wouldn’t want to pay anything approaching 75-100 (I typically try to keep individual bottles under 100 anyway)
Just got a bottle from Bowsaw. Very nice and smooth. Lovely bottle.
Nabbed a bottle of Blanton's at Total Wine for $80. Am prepared to be disappointed lol
Blantons is solid for MSRP, which is about 70-80$.
I've gotten to the point that I just sit around waiting for texts if I want to buy rare whiskey now.
Recently picked up a couple of Russells Camp Nelson Bs, a couple Bardstown Discovery 12s, a couple Redwood Empire Haystack Needle, and a Penelope 10 year estate
Picked up a couple more just because Costco gets some things around the holidays that I don't normally see (not even super-premiums, I assume): Knob Creek 12 yr for 53 and Heaven Hill 7 yr for 40.
