This was arguably the greatest Super Bowl of all time, or at the very least among them. And that play was delivered with the excitement and build of a week 7 TNF
I thought the game was a solid level below last year. First half was absolutely terrible on basically every level.
Yeah, this was far from a "GOAT Super Bowl". First half was awful. Halftime show was meh. Commercials were meh. My pulled pork was awesome. The end of the game was awesome, but mainly because the Niners lost and my square hit, not because of any spectacular football greatness.

I always thought Romo's broadcasting career took off so exponentially because he was a fresh face, recent player, but most importantly had multiple moments where he 100% binked an exact playcall and outcome very early in his tenure. Haven't done my research though.

I don't know why Romo was delivering with a 9ers slant, but most of that drive he was subdued, at least for his level.
Contrast that with the buildup on the 3rd and 4 with 2:00 in regulation, Romo was basically promising the game would be over with a 1st down, not discussing the other scenario.
Somebody should tell that to Kyle.
Switch QB and coach and 9ers win by 14+ easily.
My point was not that Purdy played as bad as he did in his other poor efforts this year, but his ceiling was nowhere close to Mahomes and Kyle chose the safe route with him.
To get a better QB you'd have to cut 40M+ of salary from the rest of the roster, he's not Mahomes, but it's Purdy plus 50M worth of talent vs Mahomes not just a straight h2h comparison

9er management (Lynch?) made a decision long ago to go on the cheap with QB. Clear to me it has not worked, even with 2 SB appearances. Now it looks like they will need to make some hard decisions on defense and Deebo, which puts pressure on a successful draft and development of Purdy beyond a journeyman QB who mixes some horrible games with some good games.
They need to find a dual threat QB in the draft and be prepared to move away from Purdy when the situation dictates. There are multiple ways of playing the rookie contract benefit.

He just needs to STFU more. He doesn't have as much to say about every single thing that happens as he thinks he does. It's like he doesn't realize that Nantz is sitting right next to him and also getting paid to talk. Occasional moments of dead air do not kill people. And he gets excited and stammers so damn much that it takes him longer to say what he's trying to say.
And he has a squeaky annoying voice that rubs my eardrums wrong. YMMV.

If Mahomes was on a rookie contract, Tyreek would still be there + another at least very solid receiver in the 15mil/year range. In addition to the very good D.

I think the farther he's gotten from actually playing, the less he's been able to bink playcalls. The game keeps evolving.

The way commentators bink play calls is the same way coaches/players do. By watching a ton of film. That's the preparation part. Apparently Romo watched a lot of film early on.

When Tony Romo became the biggest sensation in NFL broadcasting, it was because he was a gunslinger as an analyst, predicting plays with an unconventional style that eventually led to a 10-year, $180 million contract, then the richest known deal in sports media history.
These days, four years into that deal, after all the criticism of Romo, CBS clearly went into his third Super Bowl as a TV analyst looking for a game manager instead of a game changer. But old habits die hard.
On the final call to end the Super Bowl LVIII overtime classic between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, Romo and play-by-play partner Jim Nantz’s lack of teamwork showed up at the worst time.
At first, Romo did a fine job with the Chiefs down three points and inside the 5-yard line late in overtime, explaining that it did not matter as viewers watched the clock wind down toward zero — the game would not end and would just roll into a second quarter of OT. But Romo kept talking too long.
This blocked Nantz from properly setting up the final play. As the winning touchdown was scored, Nantz said, “First and goal, Mahomes flings it! It’s there! Hardman! Jackpot! Kansas City!”
Romo first muttered in the background of Nantz’s call as if he were a yahoo on local radio. After Nantz finished, Romo started in, “This was the Andy Reid special. …” And then on and on.
For 30 seconds, as CBS showed reaction, Romo talked about the play when the best analysis would’ve been silence, which would have allowed the crowd and pictures to tell the story. It should have been Nantz’s broadcast moment, if anyone’s.
Nantz and Romo were once supposed to be the next Pat Summerall and John Madden but have fallen so far...
