Goodell hasn't done jack ****. He's been a pretty terrible commissioner overall, but since the NFL literally can't fail, it will actually look like he is doing a good job. I don't think the international games do anything for the NFL. They are generally a bad product and the Internet is almost surely why these entities have grown (like soccer and F1 fans in the US).

I dunno how much this matters in the end if true

But god ****ing damnit

This is a fireable offense.

100% not trolling. I’d fire his overrated unprepared dumbass.

I agree it's a fireable offense but ya can't fire him. They got too much of a good thing going. One thing is absolutely clear tho. Shanahan will never be included in the top echelon of coaches. After what just transpired it is now glaringly obvious he's not that guy.

Is Reid? McNabb didn't know OT rules either.

Or it's the opposite. It's clear he's one of the best coaches, frequently gets his team far and then runs bad on variance. The proclamations people make after a single elimination tournament are always hilarious.

49ers lost because of a rare McCaffrey fumble and a punt that hits a guy's leg. You are going to have to give me at least 2 more times of him losing in the SB before I start questioning this.

People did the same thing with Reid. What changed? More opportunities and Mahomes. He might have zero if it weren't for Mahomes. Nobody says **** about Reid anymore.

Also, these numbers that were published were only a 7% increase. Doesn't TayTay have something like 250 million followers on Instagram alone? So with the Nielsen numbers fudging maybe about 4% of her fans watched?

I generally agree with this, Shanny is the QB whisperer and 1 of the best but man he's taking some brutal losses with double digit leads late in games. Keeps happening over and over and is tough to ignore. I'll never forget that 3rd/4th and 4 sequence to end regulation where he gave Mahomes the ball back. Or obviously his playcalling with the big lead in the superbowl as Falcons OC.

Even Reid didn't really have anything like that in his career. When the McNabb Eagles teams lost, they didn't really lose on 1-2 plays. Ditto for the Alex Smith Chiefs.

But I generally agree, you would think more than ever after what we saw with another great coach lately, people would realize it is easy to make the right decision/not beat yourself when you got the best player in the league at QB.

I'm not saying my position is super rational but what Shanahan did is unforgivable to me. Seriously unforgivable. Everyone makes mistakes but there's certain mistakes I can't let slide, like forever. Not knowing the OT rules in the most important game of your life is one of those things. So yea it's just literally impossible for me to think he's a great coach after that. And I'm fully aware of the possibility that that's on me.

I'm missing the part where he didn't know the OT rules. Articles clearly stated some of his players didn't know, but they might've been talking about the end of the first OT and the clock, which leads to the question of why even have a clock in OT for the playoffs?

And upon reading players said they weren't all aware of first TD isn't an auto win but that doesn't really change anything anyway. Coaches are still making the play calls. It's even possible they were told during OT the plan. People making a big deal out of nothing.

re TV ratings, seems impossible to measure now for something like the superbowl because of streaming.

Seems like lot of these networks fluff their streaming numbers. The KC/TB SB with Mahomes/Brady had similar ratings to Bengals/Rams. The NBA Heat/Nuggs had similar ratings to Celts/Warriors, Ethan Strauss has written on this some.

Come on bro. McNabb not knowing regular season games can end in a tie is on him. Everyone knows that. It's not Reid's fault his QB is really really dumb. Also, not really analogous cuz SBs can't end in a tie anyways.

SF players never being told the new OT rules for the playoffs/SB cuz their coach somehow didn't know either is just on a level of incompetence I have rarely witnessed in my life.

Let's not count the Pacheco fumble or Mahomes int either. KC -14.5 without those rare occurrences.

Agree the OT stuff seems like a media creation. Who cares if Arik Armstead knows the OT rules to a tee?

It didn't affect the outcome of the game, just created a fun casual fan/sports radio/espn soundbite

A friend asked me if it could.

Ehh there were a few Alex Smith playoff games where it seemed like a bunch of crazy **** happened for them to lose. That game vs the Colts where they were winning 38-10 and lost after Luck recovered his own fumble to score and that Titans game where they were up 21-3 and Mariota caught his own pass deflection to score

yeah a few in a long career

but most of the time the mcnabb teams lost they moreso got owned by the rams, bucs, pats, cowboys

Shanny has the (falcons OC) Pats/Rams/KC 2x in title games or conf title where he had double digit 4th quarter leads and lost, all within the last 7 years. Pretty amazing really.

But then it is like that is the closest Ryan ever got/best he ever played. Garapollo was involved in 2 of those, this year with a 6th rd pick. You wanna kill him, but he's definitely elevating QB's in a way no one else is.

You will not find direct evidence Shanahan didn't know cuz the dude is savvy enough not to admit it. But it's obvious he didn't know after his weaksauce response, after the players admitted not knowing, and really most importantly after SF chose to take the ball when anyone with a pea-sized brain would obviously go on defense first given the new rules. That circumstantial evidence is so strong that I simply wouldn't participate in a debate with anyone who thought otherwise because I would never be able to believe they are arguing in good faith.

Of course, the numbers are inflated. It determines what the networks can charge per commercial.

Think this is reading a little too much into it man.

Again, main critique of Shanny should be the 3rd/4th down sequence at end of regulation.

The Pats game is obviously egregious, no arguments. They were only up 3 points in the 4th quarter this year. He has one of the better playoff winning % all time. Eventually he'll win one and it'll be forgotten like it was with Reid

I was surprised he's only 44, thought closer to 50 since he's been around awhile. Shanny Sr got him started young.

But man, you don't get teams like the 9ers have often in a league where everyone has the same financial resources. Maybe he'll get back, maybe he won't. NFL coaching world is littered with 1 time geniuses that regressed to the mean obviously.

I don't blame him for the special teams stuff obviously, that's him running like ****, but c'mon on the 3rd/4th and 4. Just because you stopped Mahomes pretty well the first 58 minutes doesn't mean you need to be confident in your ability to do that. Also, totally blew the timeouts situation at end of half.

He's kinda like CT on the Challenge the more I think of it, clearly 1 of the best but just kept having bad variance/bad decision making at the end for awhile. Eventually he got over the top and went on to win like 5. Hopefully Shanny can exercise his demons in similar fashion.

Equity-wise I agree with you. In the heat of battle coaches make mistakes, even great ones although obviously you expect the latter to do less no. So that's forgivable to me.

Again not knowing the OT rules going into the most important game of your career is just on a whole other level. Doesn't matter that not knowing the OT rules is a marginal mistake from an equity standpoint. That's missing the point by a parsec.

What evidence is there that Shanny didn't know the ot rules lol

yeah, honestly it is getting absurd to insinuate he didn't know the rules when he made a decision at that was like marginally worse at worst (novel situation, gotta factor in D fatigue)

this is all wrong. Especially: "anyone with a pea-sized brain would obviously go on defense first"
