The modern nba player (correctly) has zero reason to try in this nonsense. Either set it up so the winning team gets a couple million per player for the win and the losing team gets nothing or abandon this bullshit
Agree there needs to be some incentive.
They should also have it the weekend before the Finals start, and just not have anyone from the 2 teams in the Finals participate; ie ProBowl and SuperBowl.
I think the players prefer the mid season break, but yeah, you might see a little better effort if the immediate threat of injury wasn't so obvious.

They could still have the mid season break, and have it actually be a break.
Nothing would have to change in the schedule if they moved the All Star Weekend to the weekend before the Finals.

Of course there's something that can be done to make it more competitive. Most obvious solution is the one that makes people play in the NBA in the first place: none of them would do it for free.

remember when i was a kid i used to enjoy all the asgs, even though older ppl would complain that they were trash ... do kids still like this? all the best players dunking and shooting 50-foot 3s, seems like fun
My takeaway was guys can shoot unlike ever before. Guys in the 90s would've been bricking left and right given the same shots.

There is definitely a difference in quality that is rooted in the fact that guys like Jaylen brown are making 60 mil a year and have literally no compelling reason to make an effort
The midseason tourney nonsense needed to have the round robin games be regular season games that counted anyway

The entire weekend save for the 3 point shootout was completely unwatchable and the only reason that was fine is cuz the risk of ruin isn’t there for making an effort. This wasn’t always the case and has definitely got worse now that salaries have skyrocketed and load management became a thing. There is zero reason to try

i mean some things just run their course....there is no way any ASG in any sport is compelling to me
had lebron +650 or so to win MVP when it was in cleveland few yrs back, think thats only 1 ive watched in like 10 years (curry won)
All stars players don’t need to shine anymore since they make so much money anyway .
It’s more about money now instead of having pride to be the best and get the money afterwards.

I’d much rather see a 3 on 3 tournament where the winning team gets a million dollars each (so they care to win). Maybe 2nd place gets something too like 250k each.
And a million dollars each to the choice of charity for the 3 winning players.
If you still want a pathetic ASG have it Saturday night and do the 3 on 3 tourney Sunday night.
The NBA can easily afford to do this.
