Box Office Draft 2024 Thread
So starting up the thread. I'll edit this (or talk eyebooger into editing this) later for more information but I wanted to get this started.
Proposed rules:
- No January movies
-10 teams, 8 picks per team (no January and maybe still a reduced number of movies?)
-$325m cap on each pick (Maybe move this?)
-Snake draft of the ABBABABAB variety
-Most North American box office at the end of January 2024 wins
Note: If your movie gets (1) moved to 2023 or (2) does not get a theatrical release or (3) gets a simultaneous streaming/theatrical release (be wary of Netflix films!) (I think we need to get rid of this one for this year, too many high profile simultaneous streaming releases last year), you may pick a movie that went unpicked, but it must be at least two weeks from release.
For substitutions only: $250m cap if its a 1st round pick, $150m cap for a round 2 pick, $100m cap for round 3 & 4, $75m for round 5 & 6, $70m cap for round 7 & 8, and $50m cap for round 9 & 10. I lowered all of these a bit.
If we want to discuss rules quoting them from last time
100% said they were in for 2024

The Bikeriders
My Ex-Friend's Wedding
ok, let me see what movies are still available
oh this is the last one and we are done; I was looking for 2
I'll take Death of a Unicorn
filming wrapped and it's expected 2024 but no release date yet
yeah; I was *this* close to taking "untitled disney release" that I saw on the calendar for November but I couldn't find hard info on it so decided not to; oops
Eh, don't think you can really draft movies if you don't even know what they are. That was probably just a placeholder for whatever Disney decided to dump in that spot at the time we did the draft anyway.
It was Moana 2
And we take “untitled paramount movie” or whatever multiple times this draft
It could have been taken
Moana 2 was not even supposed to be a movie. It was a gonna be a tv series and it was a shock when it was announced as being changed into a movie a couple of weeks ago.
And no, we don't (or at least shouldn't) take untitled movies unless we know what they actually are. "Untitled [director/actor] movie" is a lot different from "untitled [studio] movie", which could really be anything, and are often just placeholders. Dates shift all the time, so unless you can produce an imdb page for the movie you're taking, it shouldn't be draftable.
Untitled Disney animated film was on release calendars like upcomingmovies.net with a date, just no title
It was draftable but was a risk since “experts” said they doubted it would be happening
Thanks for proving what I just said. Those movies both had imdb pages, so it was known what they were.
Moana 2 was not even announced as a movie at the time we did this draft, so it shouldn't be draftable. I might as well be able to draft "upcoming december release not on calendar yet".
Again, it was on the calendar, just kept under wraps what it was
I think the rule should be that if a movie is on the calendar then it’s draftable, regardless of title or no title
If not on the calendar (for a date or for tbd year of draft) then it’s not draftable
Again, Moana 2 was never supposed to even be a movie. They bumped what they originally had for that date and replaced it with that. This happens all the time.
You can't draft movies that you don't even know what they are. Untitled is fine, but you have to at least know what it will be once it has a title. Have a look at all the untitled Disney movies in 2025 and tell me how you think they are draftable.
Anything with an imdb page is fair game, the rest aren't. This isn't hard.
Civil War got great reviews at SxSW
Maybe it can move some tickets
It did indeed move some tickets
The Amateur and Death of Unicorn aren’t coming out this year
I’ll take
Babygirl
The Fire Inside
As replacements
I guess I'll replace Wolfs with A Complete Unknown. Might be able to add an extra $10m or so lol.
Some spectacular bombs this year. Joker 2 not even making $60m has to be an all-timer.
