I’d much rather see a 3 on 3 tournament where the winning team gets a million dollars each (so they care to win). Maybe 2nd place gets something too like 250k each.
And a million dollars each to the choice of charity for the 3 winning players.
If you still want a pathetic ASG have it Saturday night and do the 3 on 3 tourney Sunday night.
The NBA can easily afford to do this.

For most of the league the All Star break is actually a one week vacation where they can spend time with family and /or travel. Dennis Schröder was at a couple German basketball games over the weekend.

Why does there even need to be an all star game? Just have a bunch of exhibitions like shooting contests and dunking contests etc.
If you want a real game just make it a short game, with 5 minute quarters. A 48 minute meaningless game in a very long season it should be no surprise nobody wants to play hard.

It’s about lack of pride to proves who’s best at the exception of a handful of players, maybe .
They don’t need so many sponsors to fight for on who’s best with the wages team pay them now.

Even if you leave out the fact that the ASG generates $$$$ (we all watch despite saying it sucks), people love nothing more but debating about who the best players are
the amount of $$$ and media attention that is generated around the conversion of "who is an all star" is a big part of the product. take away all the TV segments and all the podcasts debating on who deserves to be an all star and who got left out and I'm pretty sure the NBA is broke.
Those conver$ation$ also apply at all level of fandom : from super casual to diehards
