Harrah's Cherokee (Cherokee, NC)

Harrah's Cherokee (Cherokee, NC)

Just got back from the soft opening of Holdem poker at Harrahs, NC.

The room is very nice; (restrooms right in the poker room - cashier just a few steps away)
the PokerTek folks are great!

I like the tables, more hands-per-hour, but still a live feel.

The 2/5 table played big, $275 average pot.

A lot of soft players in the room; a few good ones.

Thinking of making a 3-day trip during 2nd week of March. Any info on the 2/5 NL games ... frequency, # of tables, general action, etc?

I'm here now and Cherokee is a good news and bad news situation. Your first time fortunately it will likely mostly feel good. However with subsequent trips it'll get worse and worse from my experience.

For example there are pages of players for 2/5. I'm 3rd on the list and have been waiting 30 minutes on a damn Saturday. Why don't they have dealers? Why are there so many players yet so many empty tables? It's beyond comprehension. They know they have the WSOP and they know what the bandwidth will be.

From my history with poker, more tables equals better games but these games seem less good the more I play. I think part of the problem is they have the tournament and 1/3 cash games in a separate area. That's where the good action and fishy players are. But they are segregated from 2/5 and higher. This is not to say the games are bad or difficult rather they just are not near as good as I would expect it to be for this many tables. I sat down Thursday for my first session and I immediately recognized a grinder from Louisville and a grinder from Atlanta. Those aren't really the players I want to play against. [emoji2369]

If I could go somewhere else, I probably would. Maybe your experience will be better than mine.

This is the situation only during the WSOP circuit events though. If they are planning to come in March, it won't be WSOP time and the room will be operating normally. It's just one room with 1/3, 2/5, and sometimes PLO games and the waitlists aren't terrible except when they have the big high hand promotions over Memorial Day weekend, 4th of July weekend, etc. During the WSOP there are way more tables going and simply not enough dealers so the waitlists get ridiculous. They usually get some of the traveling tourney dealers to help deal cash games when they are available, but those dealers are already working a ton of hours just with the tourneys. The regular dealers work 80+ hours a week during the WSOP, doing that 4 times a year now is burning them out even faster than before. I'm not sure where you think they can magically get more dealers from just to cover additional cash game tables for a couple weeks and then go away. I'm pretty critical of a lot of decisions the poker room mgmt makes, but this just seems entitled/unrealistic.

As far as game quality, the WSOP brings in a lot of tourney players to the NLHE cash games, who might not be great at deep stack cash games but tend to make smaller errors and aren't really giving away a lot of money. The big gamblers/whales like to play the PLO and Big-O games, that's where all the action seems to go.

If you think a 30-minute wait is bad, try coming on any Friday, Saturday, or Sunday next month when they're running their promotions. You'll be lucky to get in a game in under 2 hours, even if you call 1.5 hours ahead.

Here in the room right now on circuit weekend, interest lists are a mile long and there's 14 empty tables going unused. They absolutely couldn't care less.

Seeing the Murphy NC location on Bravo now, says "opening Spring 2024". Still a Harrah's location so the rake can be expected to remain 7+2 or whatever it is now, but it'd be good to have another room in the region to meet the demand

This is great. I didn't even know the casino existed. It's the same drive for us, but nice to have options. We take our camper to the KOA at Cherokee, and it looks as if Murphy has a nice KOA, too.

Harrah’s Cherokee just opened a smoking room near the poker room. You can smell the smoke in the poker room.

Planning a winter trip to the mountains, what are cash games like outside of tournament series?

Does 2-5 NL run on a regular basis?

We are thinking of renting a cabin for the week following Christmas.

Anyone know the buy in structure for 2/5NLH and 5/5PLO?

Also do they reward tier credits for cash game play?

2/5 is 200-1000 or up to the biggest stack
5/5 is 300-1000 or up to the biggest stack

You do earn tier credits while playing cash games.

Bravo shows there's a table up and running today in the new room at Harrah's Cherokee other casino Valley River.

How are there 9 tables going at Harrah’s Cherokee right now? My maps app shows me it’s impossible to get to (from Charlotte or anywhere but local). And I’m hearing it’ll take months to repair I-40.

Assuming they have power what else is there to do if you’re stranded there?

Bravo is showing games so it looks like the casino made it through the hurricane. Does anyone know how the rest of the Cherokee area made out? The hotels, restaurants, roads, houses, etc. Any word if they are still going to have the WSOP circuit event in November?

Yeah I’m concerned about what shape the western part of the state is in.

I’m planning to make the trip for the WSOP Circuit event after Thanksgiving, but I’ve heard the roads are in bad shape, and might not be much better, even a month from now.

Of course, all the best to the residents in the area, and everybody involved in the cleanup and restoration.

Roads are totally fine going to and from Cherokee. I-40 on the TN/NC border is shut down for the next year, but that's easy to get around.

Cherokee and the surrounding area is also totally fine. Only Asheville was destroyed.

The games however are kind of dead. October (and March) is supposed to be a peak gambling month. But they've been sending lots of dealers home early every single day.

It really doesn't help that the governor of NC is telling people to stay TF out of western North Carolina. Maybe that message will change by November WSOP.

Anybody kniw how to get here by bus or plane? Doesn't seem to have a greyhound bus stop.
