season 8 nearly killed this property, but i guess enough time has passed, and now it seems like hbo is finally getting around to being the game of thrones network. here's a rundown of all the projects, best i can tell

in production

- season 2 of house of the dragon will probably air starting in june 2024. 8 episodes

- the dunc & aeg show appears to have been green-lit, with filming to begin this year? looks like they're aiming for season 1 to be on the air towards the end of 2025. think it'll be called the hedge knight. 6 episodes

development stage

- bloodmoon. this is old news, but i just heard about a lot of it. think it's been in the news recently because some pictures of naomi watts on their new casterly rock set (which actually looks pretty cool) have surfaced. this bronze age of heroes long night prequel series was supposed to be the original follow up to game of thrones back in 2019/20 or whatever, but it sounds like the idea was weird and bad, and their $35m(!?) pilot sucked, and got's ending left the audience sour, so the new hbo president pulled the plug on this thing. hope the pilot gets released at some point though, and the original one for game of thrones. would be fun to see how bad they are

- unnamed jon snow show. seems like they've tried to get this going a couple times, but it's officially back on the shelf now. wouldn't be surprised if they take another run at this down the line. one of many ideas they seem to be kicking around constantly

- unnamed targaryen conquest project, from aegon i to jaehaerys i. this could begin with an aegon's conquest movie. then season 1 on aegon's reign / fighting dorne, season 2 on aenys, season 3 maegor, season 4 jaehaerys. or they could all be movies. still in the pitch phase, but this seems to be the new project being pushed forward ahead of the others

The Hedge Knight is perfect for TV imo.

yeah thats what everyone says, that the characters and stories are great. also great for tv in the sense that it could be cheaper and easier than the other got stuff
(less sfx and smaller cast, at least in the beginning)

to those that have read the released novellas: would you expect subsequent seasons to be more episodes? i heard that the hedge knight doesn't have a lot of meat, so it makes sense they're going with only 6 eps, but are the others bigger in size and scope?

Snow is dead most likely.

Just make a sequel to GOT.

Arya

Yes.

Maybe 6 episodes is all it takes.

The Alt Shift X videos on the graphic novels were hype af.

6 episodes for the first 2 stories in the hedge knight would be good. a lot of **** happens in those stories

I never finished the third story

what do you think of making aegon's conquest a movie? i remember you saying before that you thought it was a bad idea for a show because it's just them going around wrecking everybody, but maybe there's enough conflict and drama for it to work as a film?

Arya

have they said that the jon snow thing is dead for good? i took it as a for now thing, unnecessary because they have all this other stuff going. the fact they keep coming back to it makes me think there's something there, and i think they def want something that addresses how badly got ended directly, maybe fix it a little after the fact. plus yeah you might as well fold in the arya sailing around idea since they're both sequels in the same time period. feel like they can kind of pick this idea up whenever, just say there's been a time jump where nothing much happened and carry on. coming up with a good idea for the series is the hard part lol
(but i guess grrm has a few, some dream of spring stuff)

any info or rumors about casting?
super excited for this it was the spin off I was hoping they would make and that seems to me the best possible option they should really make one season for each of the 3 stories and ya the 2nd and 3rd stories absolutely have enough to be stretched out to 12+ episodes very easily while still staying extremely faithful to the books.

I never finished the third story

the 3rd story is fantastic you should really finish it

I adore the knight of the seven kingdoms novellas (the hedge knight the sworn sword and the mystery knight) and at this point I would much rather have him publish more dunk and egg stories than finish ASOIAF and it's not even close. and btw the audiobooks are really fantastic the narrator (guy who played viserys in the show) does an incredible job.

if they give this show a good budget and get the right creative team to make it and cast it well it has GOAT potential.

haven't seen anything yet, but i guess the one interesting detail i did note was that they apparently didn't specify any race for the casting of dunc. part of it probably because they wouldn't mind having some diversity in the show, but also because they want as many options as possible given that actor has to be like 6'2"-6'4" at minimum.

guessing we'll hear something sooner than late considering that filming is set to start june 3rd in belfast

nice

and apparently the 4th one, the she-wolves of winterfell, is one of the other grrm projects that might actually get completed, so an extra season there. if ppl watch the show...

saw some more stuff that i missed, and also to clarify what i said before

- aegon's conquest --> feature film, theatrical release. with an hbo series to follow
current plan seems to be to make a big hollywood movie out of the conquest. casting will be very interesting here, considering it'll transition into a tv series after. would they get big names to be in both, or go with more of an unknown, or just re-cast when they get to tv? and i guess if this succeeds as a movie, we'll probably see more asoiaf films in the future. would be cool, there's probably a bunch of neat stories that you can tell in 2-3 hours

- 9 voyages of young corlys --> animated show. they were working on this as a live action thing but finally decided that it'd be too difficult and costly like that, so now it's being developed as an animated project.

- there are 2 other animated projects in some stage of development, while 2 others were shelved.
this is pretty cool. i've been wondering for a while, since watching those got history & lore videos where just some still images and narration was pretty compelling, why they haven't made any animated shows. the material really lends itself to that given how huge and epic a lot of it is, and how hard it is to pull off in live action. obviously with animation you can do anything you want, you're mostly only limited by your imagination. anyway we could be getting 2-3 different animated series, to start with. hopefully we get at least one. should do, seems like a thing they're pretty interested in. i mean having a couple of these things kicking around could certainly plug some programming gaps, probably part of the thinking as well

- untitled nymeria show still in the works. not greenlit, 2026 at earliest
i guess this is another one they considered going animated with, but a show like this with strong female lead has to be a draw for them, would be a nice role for someone. apparently this series was the 2nd idea they pursued after got, the 1st being some kind of valyria thing. now that could be animated. would be interesting to see how they approach a live action show requiring hundreds of dragons, without it sucking. anyway they've come back to the nymeria idea, possible it's the next thing to get confirmed.

- in a not too distant blog post i guess grrm was talking about "shelved" vs "killed", and how "nothing is ever dead for good in hollywood". so this is sort of what i meant regarding this jon snow series, the fact that they keep coming back to it seems meaningful, and what is "shelved" may never die. but it is way down the line at the moment, with all these other projects in development, so ... 2030? lol

I would be absolutely stoked for some animated adaptations esp if they did some R rated ones.

by riverboatking k

any info or rumors about casting?

i guess they announced it today

dunk = some 6'4" irish ex-rugby player Peter Claffey, "known for Harry Wild (2022), Wreck (2022) and Bad Sisters (2022)", which i guess are all (british?) tv shows. quit rugby at some point to pursue acting ... possibly because he was better at the latter? i sure hope so. was in 12 eps of wreck (7.0 on imdb), but perhaps his 1 ep of bad sisters (8.3) is the best example of his work? consult your local irishman for more information

egg = some british child Dexter Sol Ansell, known for "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023), The Midwich Cuckoos (2022) and Christmas on Mistletoe Farm (2022)".
if you're a big hunger games fan you may have noticed him as some main character in a flashback in this one movie (6.8), or alternatively in 5 eps of that midwich thing (6.6)

glgl fellas

interesting thanks.
really hope they get a good crew and show runner I have incredibly high expectations these short stories are some of my absolute fav fiction have read/listened to them more times than I can keep track of and have no plans on slowing down.

fwiw the narrator (pretty sure the actor who played viserys, brother of the dragon queen) does a phenomenal job really enjoyable to listen while falling asleep at night.

this guy did a video on the writing team, will probably be more updates to follow as filming ramps up for june

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mek0isq-...
(from ~7:00-14:00 mark)

cliffs
- show runner: ira parker (wrote hotd s1e4), also worked with one of the writers on a show called "the last ship"
- seems like a solid group
- grrm and ryan condal are listed as producers, not sure their levels of involvement, but grrm did talk about being part of the team writing the pilot. unlike with got it seems like they have a writers room, and he is in it, so that's encouraging

by 72off k

Reasonably solid background but not spectacular. Will need involvement by GRRM in the writer's room.

Snow show confirmed dead.

WHAT IS DEAD MAY NEVER DIE. you know this

prob more accurate to say that the jon snow show has been put on ice

but seriously, like i said above, seems like it's been put back on the shelf, behind all these other projects. not dead, just resting. until 2030 or whatever

i don't think anyone even said that it was dead, just that it's been paused indefinitely or something

Which book specifically has the events of HotD in? I just spoiled myself quite bad when trying to find out through google

Am i right in thinking its a small part amongst other stories in Fire and Blood?

that is my understanding, yes

There's also The Rogue Prince and The Princess and the Queen

edit: Oh just googled and apparently Fire and Blood has expanded versions of these two stories. I haven't read Fire and Blood obviously.

I'm in the bookreader club now after going through all five books since Season 4 ended.

Ten years ago I thought:
"It took five years from the publishing of Book 3 to Book 4. And then six years from the publishing of Book 4 to Book 5.

So, it's been three years already. Book 6 should be out by 2017. And the 7th and final book by 2023.

I can wait."

That logic was why I was willing to jump into the series.

I genuinely feel bad for fantasy literature fans who read and loved A Game of Thrones when it came out in 1996.

Martin turns 76 in September. He always seems much more interested in doing other projects.

I think I might have joined the pessimists group that thinks he won't finish the series.

At this point I think I'd lay -400, maybe -500 that he won't finish the series. Sad, ASOIAF grabbed me like nothing I've ever read before when I picked it up in the mid '00s (I actually picked up GOT based on a thread on 2+2 on "what's your favorite book in the last 10 years, and someone answered "any of the ASOIAF books that qualify" which got a lot of +1s).

I actually self-quoted my own post from '14 ITT last year, but sharing again in solidarity:

by jawhoo k

I'm personally hoping he's writing both TWOW and ADOS at the same time, and will announce release dates for both simultaneously, one in '15 or '16 and one in '16/'17.

If he isn't, there's still hope for getting ADOS out before the show catches up, but you need to get 2 seasons out of AFFC and ADWD combined (seems like a stretch), and 2 out of TWOW.

'14 - ASOS #2
'15 - AFFC/ADWD #1
'16 - AFFC/ADWD #2

Despite the page count, it's really hard to imagine them getting 3 seasons out of those two books, whi

In the meantime, GRRM's proteges Daniel Abraham and Ty Frank (aka James S A Corey) finished the entire Expanse series (9 books + 6 novellas) and have started a new series.

Maybe GRRM should ask them to finish ASOIAF

expanse series is the best sci fi I ever read(not that high of a bar). some of it is brilliant. the novella "the churn" is especially good, and short.

I started their new one. it seems good so far, but I'm barely into it

George definitely ain't finishing.

I like to pretend the show ends with s6 so like the true ending, it will forever remain a mystery!
