Winter of Our Disco Tent: Lounge LC Thread
The season is upon us like it is every year. Count your blessings, celebrate, and be nice.
That goes for you, too, Zeno.
Saw an article about the benefits of walking meditation. The idea is to "be in the moment and without judgment."
I'm suspicious of this whole mindfulness stuff. I like to walk, sometimes listening to music or podcasts or sometimes just thinking or worrying over some stupid things.
Our most frequent walker/hiker here is MrBaseball. I wonder if he's part of the mindfulness, be in the moment without judgment crowd. Or if anyone is?

Not sure what 'mindfulness' means, but I walk a lot. Most everything I do is walking distance from my house.
I like I'm more like you, John, in that I'll be thinking about some problem/issue while walking. Not focused, just kind of in the back of my mind. Often, a solution will occur to me while out there.
Just been for my daily hour's walk in the park. I normally think about useless, fantasy stuff, like how life might have been if I hadn't been such a dickhead in my youth.
I'm an inveterate walker. Although I have no idea what "mindfulness" means, I've practiced zen meditation for over 50 years, and I can do it while walking.
I would much rather be thinking or looking at the light (former photographer) while on foot, but if I need a 'reset', I'll snap into Zen for a few minutes. I think of Zen as 'mindlessness', which sounds like the exact opposite of 'mindfulness', but I am at that stage of life where I really have no idea wtf anybody is talking about. But anyway, it's just a trick I use to shut my brain off and recharge it. There's nothing mystical about it. I can get the same boost with a chat with a friend over a beer or a cup of coffee.
are you a gimmick account of mine that has attained singularity because that's what I often do
I have wondered if it was just me.
I think I'd like to try zen meditation instead. The how-to links I've looked at involve sitting down, but I want to do it while walking. I wonder if Phat would mind giving some advice on this.
I guess I don't have the mind for meditation. I do, though, zone out a bit looking out over the ocean from my living room.

I'm still resisting the urge. Five months into quitting smoking.

that's super weird, are you sure you're not still getting nicotine somehow, are you regularly getting 2nd hand smoke? are you doing the gum/patches?
what happened for me was i went cold turkey and after about 2 weeks when it fully cleared the thought of smoking was revolting, suddenly smelling cig smoke had the regular disgusting instead of pleasant or neutral aroma and the few times i even bummed a cig from someone while drunk i found it incredibly distasteful
having cold sweats at night as it left my system was wild, wouldn't be able to sleep, would just toss and turn all night as sweat poured out of my body

Golddog and rickroll,
I'm using nicotine tablets, two grams, two or three a day. I'm not around smokers, but the other night I was at a bar, sitting near the door. I could smell smoke on people who came in after smoking outside. It was disgusting.

Daughter: So what are you doing mid-August?
(I know what's coming.)
Are you able to pet sit for a week to ten days?
Me: Sure, drag me out of Newport in the prime time of the year because I can't wait to escape this hellhole.
Not a problem, dear.

Just had an "only once per year" meal tonight. Lou Malnahti's deep dish pizza. This stuff is awesome. I realize Chicago deepdish gets its lovers and haters but this stuff is awesome. That said I only have it once a year (for my birthday!) so it remains an elusive treat. I actually do prefer Chicago tavern style thin crust for more normal pizza nights. Deepdish is for special occasions 😀 But to be honest I never really met a pizza I didn't like?
I remember posting here 10 years ago when I turned 60 that I was officially an old man. Now that I am 70 I guess I am an official old fart? Who knows, I think I am in better shape now than I was at 60. I am having trouble wrapping my head around this number. I don't feel old but I guess I definitely am. My Mother is 97 and still going strong, fully mobile and cognizant so I figure I still got plenty of time left if I don't screw it up by eating too much pizza 😀

Happy Birthday, mrb. I became an old man last November, and I am allowed to smoke cigarettes on my birthday. It is a scientific fact that anything consumed on that day cannot possibly be harmful. My mother is 83, and did the train journey, solo and in stages, from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City over Xmas. Way to go, Ma. I feel like John McCain.
Happy Birthday, MrBaseball, and welcome to the club. Cheers!
A bunch of my close friends hit 70 a couple months ago, and they all look to me like they did when we were in high school.
Still, it seems impossible we are 70.

How long did it take her?
I feel like John McCain.
I'm sorry.
