They can’t pay him til the end of next season? It’s the NFL rule that players can’t be extended til after 3 full seasons on their rookie contract

(Iirc the only exception isn’t an extension…if someone got cut after yr 1 or 2, they can then sign a longer deal somewhere else)

Oh, did not know. Thx. Sucks for him.

Definitely very different from Burrow and I don't believe Daniels will be nearly as good. But Burrow also had 4 pretty mediocre college seasons. Before his last year at LSU I think he was projected to get drafted around the 5th round. So dismissing someone because their senior season was their only good year doesn't really work.

Here you go.

No guarantees obviously and also obviously, Daniels is more talented than Pickett and his running is a huge value add. But I suspect the Daniels late developer typology ends up with Pickett more often than it ends up with Burrow

So IMO it’s a red flag in QB play. ‘It all just clicked’ seems less likely than ‘he’s older, more mature, more experienced and physically superior to most of the kids he’s playing against so of course he’s dominant now’

So I think the same thing about Bo Nix too.

It’s even more of a thing in the NBA where smart clubs almost always take the risk on the raw/less polished athlete who is 18/19 than the 3-4 yr starters who are clearly better college players.

Yep. And every RB who is often damaged goods by the time their rookie deal runs out.

The problem with the raw talent that needs to be polished is that not everyone makes that leap in year 2 like Mahomes or Lamar. If you draft a QB that needs 3 years to develop, you're already at the point where you have to pay him.

If Justin Fields was going into year 3 now, there would be a much higher chance the Bears (or somebody else) would give him a starting spot because he would be a year removed from the decision on his 5YO.

So just draft Brandon Weedon?

The point of young guys v old guys isn’t about contracts as much is it’s about talent and ceiling. There’s far more likely to be more improvement in a 20 yr old than in a 23yr old when the 23yr old wasn’t remotely as good as the 20yr old when he himself was 20.

And the reason Fields isn’t getting another starting spot is because 3 years have past and he’s still ****.

It’s got nothing to do with 5yo any more with Fields. If someone thought he was remotely worthy of getting the option the market would have been hotter for him. It’s been one of the most ******ed parts of the conversation for the past few weeks. Both Fields and Darnold and every other 1yr QB will be free agents at the end of 2024.

It's obviously about talent and ceiling. But teams want QBs that aren't more than a year out from being "ready" because it gets exponentially more difficult to get to the Super Bowl if your QB isn't on his rookie contract (or a cheap extension year) unless he's named Brady or Mahomes.

And the reason Fields isn’t getting another starting spot is because 3 years have past and he’s still ****.

Well, he had a starting spot in 2023 because that was year 3 for him. If 2023 would have been his 2nd year, there's a way higher chance he gets another shot in 2024 because now that's his third year.

XFL kickoff rules are great. This is a good change

Now let’s actually fix the onside kick, or get rid of it in lieu of something else. Eliminating surprise kicks is going to make the recovery rate basically 0% from the paltry 3.2% it was last season.

I like the XFL 4th and 15 from the 25 rule. If you want to make it tougher, do 4th and 20 or 4th and 25. At least give the teams a chance.

Kickoffs used to be the most exciting plays. It was a chance to strike back after getting scored on. Devin Hester was a star just 9 seasons ago. Desmond Howard was the MVP of Super Bowl XXXI. If your onside kick went out of bounds you got to try again because it was such an exciting play and they wanted to maximize drama.

If this rule change can get us even 10% of the way back it'll be awesome. Kickoffs have been a complete waste of time.

+ harrison jr going 9th and vikings trading their 11th for the privilege of taking on kyler murray's boondoggle contract

granted he qualified his mock as what he thinks should happen if he was gm of every team, not what will happen, so at least he's tacitly admitting he's insane

I assume you mean mocking the pick as hilarious.

I thought Klatt's mock of Miami taking Penix at 21 was pretty bad when everything Miami has done so far shows they are going to give Tua his contract.

It’ll never stop being hilarious to me that good ol’ Mickey T drafted pennington, got fired for being complete trash, and talks like some ASMR designed to put you to sleep has a seat at the table

In the alternate universe of Tannebaum where they find someone willing to trade for Murray's contract that might be a smart move even though Harrison might be too good to pass up anyway.

If the Cardinals pick early again next year I can see them take the Broncos route and just eat the dead cap. At that point it's "only" $63mil anyway IIRC.

I still have a little belief in and hope for Kyler

This year is the year IMO but I’m holding my stock for now
