Is it OK to Probably Injure Traffic Blocking Protester to Possibly Save Life?
Let's be explicit so everyone is on the same page. This is unfortunately not a purely hypothetical question except for the preciseness I am hypothesizing.
You are driving your mother to the hospital along a route that you have every reason to believe is clear. But it's not, because of a protest. A protest that would not legally be allowed to totally block traffic as they are doing. Because of cars stopped behind you, the protest adds 20% to the probability your mother will die. If you slowly plow through the protest, there is an 80% chance that you will injure someone fairly seriously but no chance you will kill somebody. Are you wrong to do that? Should it be illegal? Does it matter what the protest is about?
(I think most of you will say it's OK. To those that did, what if the mother death probability went up by only 5%, the protester death probability went from zero to 70% and the policy being protested was clearly bad?)
Can I still slowly run them over if my mother isn't dying?
Idiots sitting in the middle of the freeway need to be taught that freeways are for cars, not people. I'm 99% sure there are signs along every highway that states pedestrians are prohibited.
you should be legally incentivated to do that yes. Tax breaks, financial rewards, a discount on future sentencing if you are criminally convincted, a small pension when old, a medal, something
Except the Trolly problem doesn't actually occur. This just did a few days ago. And in the trolly problem no one is breaking the law. The people who are making fun of the problem are probably doing it either because I choose to put numbers on it, which bugs them, or more likely because they want to distract from the fact that they don't want to try to defend protesters who know very well that there is a chance their illegal action could actually cause death.
(Notice that I didn't specify the protester's cause. The assistants to Chris Christie (who in that case were analogous to protesters) deserved more jail time than the Golden gate Bridge protesters do.)
Is the political angle coming in a future post, or did you post in this forum by mistake?
Tom Cotton basically said that drivers should run over Gaza supporters who stop traffic. I think that whether they should depends on various upsides and downsides and their probabilities. It is interesting that those who think running them over are giving their reasons but those who think it is wrong are being much more imprecise.
Mother isn’t dying so doesn’t matter. You’re biased so your predictions will be off.
No it is not ok to 80% hurt someone because you feel like you *might* help someone in the process
You might also get shot for vehicular homicide
You screw up your own answer being skeptical of the 20% dying probability. I meant it to be undebatable (and have deleted the words "you assess" from the OP). But your answer would still be the same would it not?

The question would be more interesting if you had a 20% chance of killing the protestor, or maybe bump it up to 30 or 40 even. As is though, it's not really too close.

I am surprised more people haven't taken matters into their own hands in these situations. I have no doubt we will see someone plow through these criminals. This would bring a lot of pleasure to a lot of people. This nonsense just makes people want Israel to blow Gaza up even more. It certainly is not helping their cause.
If I was trying to get my mom to the hospital I'm getting through there one way or another. I'm not doing calculations in my head.

Should the mom's illness matter? What if it's liver failure after decades of drinking?
So let's change it to something less complicated. It's ambulance drivers and they know their patient will die if she doesn't get to the hospital quickly. Their only way to accomplish this will probably hurt some protesters. Should they do it? Does it matter if there was an alternate way to protest? Does it matter if there is good reason to believe that without this protest more than one innocent person will probably die? Does it matter if the protest was for a good cause but was technically illegal?
No numbers this time. Since there is an 85% chance you who are reading this will misconstrue them.
What’re odds patient does at hospital?
How important are individual freedoms to you?
lol. This guy’s posting never ceases to amaze me.
logistically speaking, it depends. The odds are you are not going to be first in line during travel up to the protesters location so in all likelihood you will have to run over other cars, not protestors. Also, are the protestors neo-nazi skinheads or hot sorority girls? Does mom have a large nest egg and are you the beneficiary? How old is mom and what is her quality of life going to be? Can the protestors be charged with manslaughter if their actions cause a delay of care that results in death? Lot of angles to consider but I'm on the side of running them over.

I think people simply should not be allowed to stop traffic, no matter the reason of their protests.
They can protest online or at their home or in any place the owner agrees to give them to protest.
There is no right to abuse public property for protests or any other private use.
Ranger ran over protestors at Burning Man. yikes. The feds don't mess around with hippies.

Fascism
Just to make myself clear. The civil rights protestors in the South were justified in their actions in spite. of the tiny chance that they would cause a medical death because their protests actrually did good. Nat Turner was right to murder slaveholders but not their children. Traffic blocking protest that will do nothing and might even hurt their cause are both wrong for medical reasons and stupid. Why is any of the above debatable?
The **** I just read?
If I'm driving to the golf course and there is a protest that creates a 7% chance I'll miss my tee time I feel completely justified in running some broke ass woke fools over.
Dave, can you actually beat 1/2? Evidence please, I don't believe you.
