British Politics
Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.
Tory leadership contest is quickly turning into farce. Trump has backed Boris, which should be reason enough for anyone with half a brain to exclude him.
Of the other candidates Rory Stewart looks the best of the outsiders. Surprised to see Cleverly and Javid not further up the betting, but not sure the Tory membership are ready for a brown PM.

Regarding the LD leadership contest, Jo Swinson is miles ahead of any other candidate (and indeed any of the Tory lot). Should be a shoe in.
Finally, it's Groundhog Day in Labour - the more serious the anti-Semitism claims get, the more Corbyn's cronies write their own obituary by blaming it on outlandish conspiracy theories - this week, it's apparently the Jewish Embassy's fault...
Lol, the tories will crap themselves if that gets traction.
They're all too toxic to gain any traction.
I heard they're considering the name Coalition to Unite the Nation's Trust.
This is the problem. If the likes of Liz Truss are involved, then they are dead in the water. Cummings is hardly Tony Blair, and these types of insurgent parties are typically lead by highly charismatic individuals.
If it's just a few ERG nutjobs, they I don't think the Tories (or indeed Labour) have anything to worry about.
If Cummings can find someone like that, then there's some bunfighting ahead. Cant think of anyone though. Hannan maybe?
Every time I think someone on the right or left might have some actual talent, I get proved wrong though, so I'm not a good one to make suggestions 😀
funny story today about warrington council refusing to give their auditors the financial information needed to complete their audit*
this is another of those councils who racked up billions of debt secured against future council tax receipts and handed it to people who look like this:
in the latest fiasco, a member of warrington council described a monaco-based hedge fund manager, who recieved tens of millions of pounds of warrington council money (and who blew through it with dodgy SPACs and 2 + 20 fee arrangements), as 'the lionel messi of investing'
now i can quite understand why a bunch of retired policemen and teachers fancy spending their dotage playing investment tycoon with billions of pounds of local council borrowings, i mean it sounds like great fun, but can someone please kindly request that they stop doing it
*of the accounts for the year ended 31 March 2019. they are five years behind schedule.
No surprise that the disreputable authoritarian Goodwin who claimed to be an independent pollster should do this.
Starmer clearly wants to be PM of some kind of coalition government with the only aims of a) maintaining the status quo and b) doing bad things more competently.
He's looking more and more like some kind of plant (and I don't mean of the vegetable variety, though that also applies).
Leader of the Commons Penny Mordaunt called him a radish (red only the outside) and said, 'I am not about to defect to the opposition benches. They wouldn't be interested in me, I'm too left wing,' which was quite smart.

I did think, on account of earlier reports, that Mordaunt, despite her Sword Lady cachet, was irrelevant because she'd lose her seat at the GE, but it now appears from local polling that she may be one of the few select Tory survivors of the upcoming apocalypse.

Kemi Badenoch might hold on in Saffron Walden as well. Could be quite an interesting Tory leadership contest, though it'll remain pretty academic until the presumed Labour government's wheels come off, and we don't know how soon that might be. Reform UK replacing the Tories looks a stretch at the moment.
I don't think that republicanism is on a downer. Nationalist parties are still in power in all 3 devolved nations. When people see what Starmer's vision really is, it will become clear that Westminster is irreparably broken. Independence will be the only way to escape the insanity.

It’s clearly on a downer in Scotland at the very least. I can definitely see it roaring right back if the Starmer government proves unpopular.

The SNP are definitely on a downer in Scotland. They're also onto their 3rd leader in the past year and a half.

No, Wales has a minority Labour government (which is not nationalist). NI is joint Sinn Fein-DUP. (The DUP is not nationalist.) The minority SNP nationalist government in Scotland may be coming to the end of its lease for the time being.
Another corrupt, fascist **** about to join Labour.

They torched a fortune on an energy company too, the people of Warrington must have been so thrilled.
Creep pseudo-pollster cited by a deplorable here talking about "National citizens"
Labour's 6 pledges... well ok, but not a sausage about the environment. We're heading for Waterworld, aren't we.
An Essex businessman who won government contracts paying his firm £3.5m a day for transporting and accommodating asylum seekers has been named among the 350 richest people in the UK.
Graham King, the founder and majority owner of a business empire that includes Clearsprings Ready Homes, which won a 10-year Home Office contract for housing thousands of asylum seekers, was on Friday named alongside King Charles III, the prime minister and Sir Paul McCartney on the Sunday Times rich list of the wealthiest people.

I've read this over and over and I can't understand it but since Plaid Cymru have cancelled their co-op with Labour, what I said is no longer correct. I think the snp problem is about leadership rather than Scots becoming less patriotic. If you can't see what is happening in NI or you think that the DUP are credible then I feel sorry for you. Their leader raped his own daughter (allegedly) and they all voted against stopping arms sales to israel. They're still just as disgusting as they were during the troubles.
