“Death to America”

“Death to America”

I’m open to hearing the moral case for allowing people residing in America to chant this and mean it. It’s not just about policing the specific words but rather the spirit and the desire to spread this spirit to others.

Unsurprisingly, you have Luciomed the issue.

I like this. It could have other uses also - "Don't be a Luciom", "It started out as a good discussion, but then he went full Luciom".

How is that pronounced anyway?

Loo see ohm?

Loosh yum?

In my mind it's always a hard C.

Same way as Lucio- Loo Chee oh or Luciano- loo chan oh, I'd imagine

Tbh it’s probably someone named Lucio. With the last name M

You people are weird

Well, most people are, aren't they?

Yep. Normal's overrated anyhow.

Grunching so maybe it was asked.

What are 5 models for countries that people generally prefer to the USA right now?

I used to say Canada and now LOL that.

Really curious what people think is a great model. New Zealand is in mine now, but it's tough to use a tiny island like that as a model for much.

Heh. Funny that treason is discussed it.

The treason trial of Aaron Burr brought about the John Marshall interpretation of the First Amendement to protect speech against the government. That without overt behavior to overthrow the government, he could not be convicted of treason.

Going back to my point that behavior against the government can be criminalized, not speech.

I do appreciate that the treatment of pro Hamas protestors on college campuses has given the progressive left a new appreciation of the 1st amendment the has been sorely lacking the last few years. Although I suspect the appreciation is mostly selfish and cynical, and no real first principles are involved.

This goes back to horseshoe theory. Extremists only wanna protest the speech they like. I'm agreeing with Marshall in saying the 1A specifically protects the speech we don't like.

Yes but no protestors have been touched by police because of the content of their speeches.

They got in clashes because they illegally occupied property

"death to America" is not a good phrase. I say this as an indigenous communist. I see USA as an empire born in slavery and genocide, and perpetuating wealth inequality, war, world ending pollution, etc....

I don't think I've ever used the phrase, and agree that it's a phrase al qaeda uses. but that doesn't mean the phrase is morally indefensible.

does your average American deserve death for contributing to unjust wars of aggression, and global exploitation, and all the other crimes of empire? certainly not, at least not in my opinion.

most people probably don't mean this when they chant "death to America"... maybe some mean it and some don't.

the phrase can certainly mean "death to American empire, not avg American citizens"

and I'm guessing this is really obvious to most people. if it's not obvious to you, and after multiple patiently, clearly explain it to you, it's very hard to take you seriously

lol no

if you're protesting and talk **** to a cop, you will usually get your ass beat.

you can be protesting totally legally. it's totally legal to talk **** to a cop and insult his mother or whatever... and you will get your ass beat

also, if legal protests are too threatening just because of the nature of the protest, Vietnam protest in Ohio for example... I'm pretty sure those college kids weren't doing anything illegal, and they were killed. iirc it was national guard who killed them, not cops... but still

cops jobs are to protect wealth and the wealthy. laws are made up by the wealthy to protect their interests.

a few days ago was the anniversary of the police bombing a neighborhood in Philadelphia in the 1980s... just dropped a bomb on an apartment building in a residential neighborhood. killed a bunch of people, including kids.

cops didn't like the protest group, and thought the group was based in that building.

if it was war, it would be a war crime. but it wasn't even a war! just cops and protesters. obv no cop was ever accused of a crime, let alone convicted.

btw, I think your beloved Thomas jefferson(slave owning child rapist) said "death to america"

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

my comment was about current pro-hamas protests, not historically.

people in USA are not happy. paying bills is not easy. healthcare, education, free time... people are struggling.

these are the natural outcomes of capitalism. capitalism is built around the wealthy exploiting the workers.

American empire is wealthy elite partying on yachts while we work 40-80 hours a week, struggling to make ends meet.

and it's even worse in other countries where workers are struggling even more than here in the heart of the empire.

if things were more fair, just, equal, we wouldn't have to work so hard for so little reward.

the billionaires class wouldn't exist because they'd share the wealth... the wealth we create.
