Modern horror movies thread

Modern horror movies thread

I'm a pretty big movie buff and I'm really into horror movies. Though classics are great I love modern horror movies the most, pretty much anything past 2000 I consider to be modern.

To give you guys an idea of the types of horror movies I like here are some off the top of my head

the grudge 1 and 2 (american versions)
the ring
insidious
dead silence
texas chainsaw massacre 1 and 2
paranormal activity (all)
the conjuring
annabelle
dark skies
nothing to fear
scream (all)
the amityville horror
american psycho (made in the year 2000 so it qualifies)
american psycho 2 (kind of comical but mila kunis is hot af so idc)
final destination (all)
the happening
1408
saw 1 (the rest are meh)
hills have eyes (2nd one is ****)
exorcism of emily rose
dark water (jennifer connelly )
dawn of the dead

k so yea this was a quick mashup of the ones I could think of atm. These are in no specific sequence and they are not all great but I found all of them entertaining. There are definitely a ton of good ones I missed but yea this is just to give you guys an idea about my taste.

As you can see I'm not a huge fan of slasher movies though hostel 1 and 2 were alright I guess, I hate movies like human centipede and tusk as they are just gross and retarded and have no storyline.

Anyways this thread is open to all modern horror movie discussion, reviews, suggestions, news, whatever. Feel free to mention classics also, I don't mind.

does anyone care about these kinds of movies anymore to discuss more in depth or just let it die?

Good bump. I'm interested in Late Night With The Devil. Haven't heard of Stopmotion.

Any horror movies currently in theaters anyone wants to recommend?

I'm interested in Late Night With The Devil.

I won't spoiler anything about the movie other than I wanted to let anyone know what they're getting into if they see this:

the beginning is an extended mocumentary about the talk show host and the rest of the movie is found footage of his show's last telecast. the show re-broadcast is done in real time. commercials are replaced by behind the scenes stuff.

also of note: this is an Aussie production other than the talk show host is an American actor. the talk show host is apparently based on a 1970s talk show host in Aussieland even though, in the movie, he is shown as a competitor to Johnny Carson.

it's playing in local theaters here this weekend. check your listings if u want to see it in theaters where u live.

Abigail was fun.

Looking forward to Maxxine, cos Pearl was fantastic.

It was one of the best of 2022 for me and I thought it was better than X, which I also liked, so I'm also really looking forward to Maxxxine, nice cast too. Haave you seen Candlyland (2022) yet? Highly recommended if you haven't.
Other recent ones I enjoyed were When Evil Lurks, Smile, Talk to Me, Fresh and Venus. I also had an absolute blast with Malignant, although it's a polarising film but I thought it was awesome fun and a great homage to those batshit nuts Italian horrors of the 70s/80s. 😀

Yes, I've seen Candy Land, pretty decent: good performances, characters that weren't just stereotypes and a hell of a twist. 2022 was an exceptionally good year for horror movies. We had Prey, Pearl and many others. I'd say 90% of 2022 horror was good to great, which is a very, very high ratio of good to bad.

The best one that flew under almost everyone's radar (I'd put it as 3rd best horror movie of the year after Pearl and Prey) was a Macedonian horror movie called 'You Won't Be Alone'. Very, very high recommend, and in many ways a spiritual successor to something like A Company of Wolves with a touch of The Witch thrown in. A surprisingly moving film.

PS. I see there's a remake of another solid 2022 horror movie 'Speak No Evil' coming out. The original was a very edgy horror/thriller, and the trailer for the remake looks like to me they've recaptured the vibe very well.

Also whilst on 2022, one of the better horror-comedies that have come out of this year is The Blackening aka 'We can't all die first', a slasher/Saw sort of movie with a mostly black cast. really good cast and writing. I laughed out loud quite a few times at both the characters and some great lines, and this is not an out-and-out comedy.

If you're interested, I cohosted this podcast about 2022 horror, where it's mostly me talking about 50+ horror movies from 2022:

Candy Land is mentioned about 18mins 20 seconds in

Thanks for the link, put it on my watch later list cheers. 😀
I still haven't seen The Blackening but keep meaning to check it out, I always confuse it with Meet The Blacks. Thanks for the heads up on You Won't Be Alone, I always have my eye out for foreign horror, last good ones I seen were The Trip, Incantation (which for netflix films were actually really good) and The Sadness from Taiwan, which rips a few other films off but is still an entertaining gorefest.

BTW, I did the movies alphabetically, so you can find You Won't Be Alone nearer the end. Or use that knowledge to find movies you want to listen about (so the Blackening is near the start). We did actually talk the most about Candy Land, IIRR, at least 10 minutes.

I really liked Talk To Me. It really stayed with me: for the rest of the night I had a creepy feeling, which is pretty unusual for me.

I wanted to see Malignant when it came out, but I didn't get to the theater in time and then forgot about it. Need to check it out.

Malignant is absolutely nuts and I reckon it could go either way with anyone watching it. I personally loved it but would completely understand if others thought it sucked, so again could go either way with you. If you're in any way familiar with Italian horror, then you should have fun with it.

Martyrs

Not for the faint of heart, but incredibly ballsy and original. This film will haunt you.

This garnered some discussion on the old IMDB horror message board with multiple interpretations of its conclusion. What's your interpretation?
Mine is that

Spoiler

Anna really did see some form of afterlife as we see the transformation in her eyes, like all the others. But as a form of revenge she tells her tormentor that there's nothing when whispering in her ear. That's why the Madamoiselle says "keep doubting" before killing herself.

But it's open to different takes I reckon, and this made the film kinda frustrating for me as philosophically it was quite ambitious, more so than many other torture themed horrors and I felt the

ambiguity of its ending

was a bit of a cop out.

Malignant was laughably bad for the first hour...then it went bonkers and I loved it

The Coffee Table (2022) This is a Spanish horror-comedy film that has gotten some good reviews. Horror master Stephen King recently said of the pitch-black tragicomedy, “My guess is you have never, not once in your whole life, seen a movie as black as this one. It’s horrible and also horribly funny.” I found that the comedy moments were actually funny to me. Unfortunately they made the horror moments especially disturbing, not in good way. Don't let this film's innocuous title fool you. Do not watch.

Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker... Purely 'Horrifying' formalism.

The Others (2001) is best ghost story I've ever seen. The second viewing is a trip.

Has anyone seen The Substance?

Has anyone seen The Substance?

it comes out next week in the USA. it has been getting great reviews from advanced screenings.

New to this thread so havenÂ’t searched it yet. Just some random thoughts:

The new SalemÂ’s Lot was obviously feckrd up by the studio, but even butchered I thought it was far better than the original (as fondly as we all remember it), and the stuff that was good was REALLY good imo.

Doctor Sleep was flawed (and the book is very flawed) ; in a vacuum I gave it a B-, an A- with degree of difficulty added, and Rebecca Ferguson getting an A+++ for Rose The Hat.

I thought Black Phone was incredible, and that Madeline McGraw gave the best performance IÂ’ve ever seen by a child actor. Hope the sequel doesnÂ’t ruin it.

I didnÂ’t believe a friend when he told me that Let Me In was better than Let The Right One In but he was correct. I obviously refused point blank to see the American Dragon Tattoo.

BTW is there an All Things Stephen King thread somewhere?
