British Politics

Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.

Tory leadership contest is quickly turning into farce. Trump has backed Boris, which should be reason enough for anyone with half a brain to exclude him.

Of the other candidates Rory Stewart looks the best of the outsiders. Surprised to see Cleverly and Javid not further up the betting, but not sure the Tory membership are ready for a brown PM.

Regarding the LD leadership contest, Jo Swinson is miles ahead of any other candidate (and indeed any of the Tory lot). Should be a shoe in.

Finally, it's Groundhog Day in Labour - the more serious the anti-Semitism claims get, the more Corbyn's cronies write their own obituary by blaming it on outlandish conspiracy theories - this week, it's apparently the Jewish Embassy's fault...

Speculation rife for a July 5th election, so I guess Sunak fancies a long summer holiday this year…

^^ Politics idiot doesn't know that GEs are by convention held on Thursdays.

My stars, the sooner the better

4th july

More rumours abound of a quick dash to the polls on the back of improved inflation news and heading off a revolt...

yup

Wonder if this is how he'll be remembered, visually - the PM so rushed to call a GE to avoid being deposed by his own party that he had to do it in pouring rain.

Oh cool, six weeks for all news channels to pretend this will be close. Still, if they can pretend there was still a title race after that one weekend where Arse and Plop both lost then I guess they'll manage

I'll be a one-issue voter for this one. Environment and likelihood to deliver on it (so not voting tory under any circumstances, then couldn't deliver a baby if they were 11 months pregnant).

Remember, these are the true patriots who care about the UK's standing in the international community and about democracy.

I was wondering if they would still try to replace sunak either to stop a GE or to lead them into it. They have to be eyeing up some deal with reform.

I think their biggest problem is who?

Sunak getting absolutely drenched in the pissing rain while d:ream plays over his speech is a great moment.

The problem for the Tories is who is there? The three main contenders (Modraunt, Braverman and Badenoch) are all relatively inexperienced and might prefer a few years as LotO to cut their teeth, than to be thrust into a potentially career derailing GE where you are hoping to hit a 1-outer.

Sunak's speech was pretty good, and I think he'll bounce once he goes h2h with Starmer. Best realistic scenario is likely a hung parliament, but the Tories are masters of self-preservation so who knows.

The name doing the rounds when this was first floated a month or two back was Patel.

Hard to believe I know, but then again when you look at the options all that’s left is scrapings from the bottom of the barrel.

i think farage is going to decide pretty quickly after these local elections whether he will take over reform and try to supplant the tories as the right wing party, or whether to go off to usa and do trump stuff

i think his decision is going to be massively impactful to uk politics for the rest of our lives

Farage off to Merica.

In his statement, he suggested his priority would be helping his friend, Donald Trump, return to the White House.

Trump sez 'Nigel who?'

So that's it. Rwanda policy scrapped.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I got told ITT that the UK had good speech protections. Not as strong as the American 1a, but pretty solid.

Explain this pls?

Councils do lots of stupid things. Hope that answers your question.

Now, back to more serious matters.

We do have pretty good speech protections. Also excellent gun protections.

No silly usa style ammendments here.

ok so why can local government tell you which flag you can put in front of your house?

I suspect it's nothign to do with speech but I really dont know the details

Jeremy Corbyn has confirmed he will stand as an independent candidate in Islington North, vowing to fight for equality, democracy and peace.
