Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
My favorite films this year have been All of Us Strangers and Perfect Days. Of the past few years A Ghost Story, Personal Shopper, Toni Erdmann, Holy Motors, Tangerine, and Arrival, which brought me to tears. I can't get the image of the two ghosts talking to each other in A Ghost Story out of my head.
But I'm also awaiting the next Deadpool eagerly.
I think Keats said we can have both Robin Hood and Shakespeare, too.

American Fiction A black writer rebels over writing "black". Meanwhile, his personal life has been turned upside down.
We really enjoyed this. I would label it "charming". Worth a watch.
I really enjoyed this quite a bit.
the plot was whatever nothing amazing but good enough but jeffrey wright and sterling k brown were absolutely fantastic just a joy to watch.
the whole cast was great but those 2 were just on another level.
I wonder if Sterling K Brown is capable of not being incredibly charasmatic.
I watched American Fiction last night. It was fantastic. I laughed out loud several times, which is extremely rare for me. I wish that more movies like this were made. Movies like this don't get made nearly as often as they used to.
If you're in Vegas, our art house movie theater - the Beverly - is screening Jan Svankmajer's Alice, All That Jazz, and Dr. Strangelove this weekend.
I might have to go see all three...never seen Alice, never seen Strangelove on the big screen, and haven't seen All That Jazz on the big screen since it was released.
I watched all that jazz recently. Didn't like it at all. The first number was great, then went downhill for me.
oh man dr strangelove on a big screen what a treat.
even with me being a big time kubrik fanboy still seems like objectively one of the top 5 films ever made.
I will admit my top 10 films list is at least 50 long.
ps: I know this is film thread but speaking of nuclear holocaust annie jacobsen (really fantastic investigative non fiction writer) just published a book about nuclear war and the US nuclear policy since it's inception and it's incredibly well researched with a ton of interviews from top level policy makers and military leaders and it turns out BIG SHOCK that real life is just as insane if not moreso than dr strangelove.
I've read 4 of her books and they were all absolutely fascinating and great reads.

We have an art house theater here in Newport that has some unusual programming, from performances by the likes of Al Stewart and John Hiatt to cult films (The Princess Bride, Fast Times at Ridgemont High).
They also program silent films with a live accompanist on synth. Buster Keaton's The Cameraman is coming up. We have another good art house theater in Providence.
Unfortunately, they don't have a great screen or sound system.
I wish we had a theater like those in Vegas, LA, or New York.
BTW, All That Jazz is terrific.

I ask my friend if she wouldn't mind taking me somewhere, and she replied, "As you wish."
Hey, are you quoting The Princess Bride at me.
"Nope. Never seen it."
"Inconceivable."
How the hell has anyone over 50 not seen The Princess Bride?

pretty remarkable but she's got a real enjoyable night ahead of her.

Cary Elwes came to town recently to share some stories after a screening. Fun night. Andre was an amazing human, obviously.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was good, but also unnecessary. Stylistically it was similar while feeling unique from its predecessor. I don't know what to think of ATJ, I can't tell if she's a good actress or not or if she just excels at that awkward, nervous, angry look that she uses in every film. Hemsworth was an interesting choice as I never associate him as a villain. Most of the technical components, set designs, costumes, action pieces, were all good; minor gripe was that portions of the dialogue were hard to decipher and I think that was an editing issue.
The major takeaway though was how much Furiosa just further elevated Fury Road for me. Furiosa weaves in more of a story element and as a result the first half drags in comparison to the breakneck pace of Fury Road; they take a while to set the stage and paint Furiosa's background and it lands, but in a flat sort of way. Fury Road starts fast and finishes even faster, and the action and explosions look and felt more authentic. It knew what it wanted to be from the very first shot, and it never deviated or tried to be something else. Near perfection IMO.
I'd give Furiosa 7.5/10. And I'd bump Fury Road from a 9 to a 9.5/10. Don't mean to make this such a comparison between the two but it's hard not to. MMFR is an all time great movie.
Anya Taylor Joy didn't have enough to do. So many characters had more dialogue than she did.
New Beetlejuice? Had no idea. Incredible trailer

I agree with Fury Road’s greatness. Felt to me like an instant modern classic, completely unique. Also agree about Anna T-J being very average.
There are some super entertaining reads about the notorious making of Fury Road
Fury Road is an all-time great film....I don't expect Furiosa to match that, but I assume it will be entertaining.
meh, who needs dialog? It ain't Shakespeare. It's Miller.
Um, have you seen Queens Gambit? One Night In Soho? Emma? ATJ is a movie star and is fantastic.
