2024 MLB Season Thread

Nobody wants these games to start more than Mannfred.

Shohei just spoke to the media for the first time. In a prepared statement, he said:

-He never bet on baseball, or any other sport,
-He didn't know that Ippei lied to him, and that Ippei took the money from Shohei's account to pay his gambling debts
-He'll continue to cooperate with the investigation, and play as the investigation plays out.

If all that's true, then this is probably the best possible outcome for his reputation going forward. He's a naive star athlete who trusted the wrong person. It happens.

In any event, these games are about start! Last year, just like we all predicted, "Someone Else" came on strong in the playoffs, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks for the World Series. Can that happen again?

T-Mobile is giving away a free MLB.tv subscription ($149 value) to T-Mobile subscribers starting TOMORROW (Tuesday 3/26 - April 1). Don't miss out.

So speaking of gambling, here are the current best odds for the World Series you can find, from Vegas insider!

Dominguez is the long-term CF anyway, Verdugo is a decent major leaguer but he's not a star. Dominguez very well could be.

Rizzo is gone after this season, I wouldn't be surprised to see Judge at 1B in the future.

If Soto doesn't re-sign Judge goes back to RF anyway.

There is literally no scenario where the Yankees don’t back the truck up for Soto

Unless roids I guess. But failing that. He’ll get a judge level deal

He's 25. $600 million isn't out of the picture.

Quick, somebody get him a DraftKings account

Acuna out for the season with torn ACL.

Ouch. So bet on the Braves to title now?

This is an awful day for the game

What a truly bizarre injury

I’m the Jinx. In a boosted MLB SGP yesterday I bet him to get a hit.

He gets a double and tears his freaking ACL in the process.

Yeah this just sucks.

With the way both teams have been playing lately, the Acuña injury paves the way for a clear path through the East for the Phillies.

It’s not yet a wrap… but not encouraging for Braves fans

Some good news. Angel Hernandez is retiring officially tomorrow. He hasn't umped in a couple weeks.

This is your best post of all time.

Apparently it took some time to negotiate his buy-out.

The guy who sued the league for racial discrimination leaves with a nice payday after being terrible at his job for ages. I thought that only worked for white males?

https://defector.com/end-of-an-error-as-...

Hernández was an equal-opportunity infuriator, thanks to a strike zone that was as large as it was inconsistent, and a quick trigger finger for tossing anyone who dared complain. But the rub with Hernández was always a little more nuanced than the calls. He was not the least accurate umpire working in most of his three decades in the game. He was in fact about league-average most of the time. But the job is not just about getting the calls right. It's also about being professional toward one's coworkers, and Hernández was a petty, grudge-holding tyrant to coaches and players. The best umpires de-escalate tension; Hernández always seemed to ignite it.

rip bozo

lol, I'll never forget him ejecting the 7th inning stretch conductor at Wrigley. Such a thin-skinned little man. Congrats on being so universally despised that they had to pay you to leave and no one even pretends to care, even after a 30+ year career.

He hasn't umped in a while.

Tarik Skubal is really good.

He’s my front runner for AL Cy Young.

…which, if the way this season has gone for me is any indication, an anvil will fall out of the sky and land on him.

Innings samples are so small that it's tough to talk CYA until August.

Ronel Blanco had some bullshit land on him for 10 games or he'd be a bit more obvious pick.

Maybe I’ll go to a Yankee Game next time…

There have been at least 2 odd interference plays at 2nd base in the past week, both involving the infield fly rule. Each resulted in 2 outs. Here is one of them.

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Jyh8XrTxm...

I think all 4 teams involved think that the situation needs to be addressed, as in both cases the interference was inadvertent.

Anyway, it seems really odd (and ironic) that you can get two outs any time that an infield fly rule is called.

Why doesn't MLB just call it a "dead ball" circumstance once an infield fly rule is called by an ump, and anything that preceded the call (except for catcher interference on the batter), or anything happening after the call (such as inadvertent interference with any fielder) is not penalized with an extra out.

Mets are Metsing, yltsi
