how many poker rooms have you played in?

It's truly incredible how many poker scenes and stops one could make in the USA. I've made about 10 big US trips, as well as some small ones, and as I plan my next trip, I still have to accept that there's just so many that I can always hit more on the next trip no matter what. Currently at 294 rooms (added one since my last update) and thinking I could add another 25 or so during a 2-3 month spring trip.

Those are some impressive lists. I'm a bit jealous. No longer into traveling. I'm stuck just a little north of 100, I think.

Mine is now 569 - drove 175 miles to Terre Haute Resort Casino 3 weeks ago and played in their new room. Nice room but only 2 tables (1-3) going on a Saturday afternoon. Better get there soon or they may close it up.

In Vegas for 2 weeks - planning on hitting Horseshoe and will try Sahara again - been there 3 times at reasonable times and no game going.

Will be 75 in August - long drives are getting painful A** wise. Hope to get to 600 before they take the keys away from me.

Hire a driver or get a partner and a van and keep on rolling! 😀

Chip Hunting Report – was expecting to pick up Sahara and Horseshoe chips this trip – have played in every other active Vegas room (and many of the closed ones) so they are the only 2 left – Cliffs – only got 1 so count is now 570 rooms played in

Sunday June 9th

Hotel moving day – after 6 nights at the Golden Nugget it’s time to move to the Flamingo for the last 4 nights and some WSOP action. Today going to play the $1,100 2-7 triple draw satellite into the Monday $10,000 event. Event starts at 7 pm so need to fill the day.

Start at the Orleans for some 4-8 Omaha/8 action. Great game for 2 ½ hrs. Leave around 1 pm up $20.

Head for favorite Mexican Restaurant - nearby on Decatur - Bonito Michoacan. Have the #13 Combo – green chile pork and guacamole burrito plus a chicken enchilada, rice, refried beans, chips, salsa and bean dip plus draft Modelo - $30 including 20% tip.

Swing by Albertson’s to replenish supplies of juice, granola bars and fruit.

Now 2 pm – too early to check in – so is it a good time to try to play in the elusive new Sahara poker room? This will be my 4th try over 3 years to find a live game there. It’s a Sunday afternoon during the WSOP surely they will have at least 1 table going (note not of Bravo so can’t check)

Hot as blazes out. Think this was one of the days when they set a record high for the date.

Park and get to poker room at 2:30. Only action is final table for daily tournament – think it’s a $75 buyin. But wait – 4 names on the 1-3 list, I’ll be 5th. Dealer sitting with chips and Manager is going to call the game – “lots of interest” and “players are in the casino”. I sit and buy in for $120. List called. Wait. Wait. Wait. One guy shows up. Claims to have played last night. Wait. Wait. Guy leaves to go get food. Second guy shows up. Talks about buying in for $300 but doesn’t open his wallet. Knows dealer – much bs is spoken. Wait some more. Couple of guys bust the tournament but say “no, I don’t play cash” as they walk past our table.

It’s now 3:45 and check in at the Flamingo is 4 pm and I need to check in, get situated and then find out where and how to register for the 7 pm event. So I cash out and head for the garage. Thwarted again. Think I should just play one of the dailies and be done with it. (spoiler – didn’t get back to the Sahara this trip)

Get to Flamingo shortly after 4– Never seen a mob like they had – must have been over 200 in line that flows out of the lobby. 5 or 6 clerks checking them in. Thankfully I have a confirmed mobile reservation and QR check in code on my phone. There are 7 check in kiosks but 2 are out of service. Maybe 20 people in line ahead of me and few of them seem to know how to work the machines. Word is that if machine doesn’t like you then you go to the back of the regular line. Get lucky and it spits out keys.

Find my room – just about as far as possible from the elevators – at 5:05. Covered in sweat. Think about skipping satellite but it is one of main reasons for coming. Unpack, find room has a refrigerator – unexpected bonus - Take shower, change clothes, feel better.

Head to Horseshoe just after 6 pm. Figure things out and register. Room is upstairs at Paris. End up with 102 runners. Ironically room is colder than a walkin refrigerator. Maintenance can’t do anything. Seems floor below is hot and is driving our thermostat. I recognize several pros including guy who busted me in 2017 at Planet Hollywood in 2-7 event. We were down to 3 and on the last draw he hit the last 5 in the deck to bust me. Would have been chip leader otherwise. Does anybody know who uses a Big Boy figurine for a card protector? I get some good hands, play tight and hang on til just after midnight when I miss 3 draws in a row. Finish 24th, paying 9.

Walking out I pass the Horseshoe Hall of Fame Poker Room. Place is hopping but I stop and look at the board. A 1-3 SEAT IS OPEN. I buy in for $200 – ask for 10 $1 chips. Sit down under the gun and pick out 2 good chips and stick them in my pocket. Look at my cards – 6c5c – call the $3. Flop is 4,7,8 rainbow. Bells are going off in my head. Check to me and I bet $10 trying to keep as many in as possible. Guy next to me and 2 others call. Turn an 8 and I bet $20. Guy next to me has about $300 and makes it $70. I push all in. River is a 6 and he turns over 8,6. I guess that’s 9 outs but still… Anyway, I say “Nice Hand” and jump up. Played in the room and got my chip so MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

I haven’t played in my regular room since my return from Las Vegas in early June. Got bored with playing 1-2 nl and the plo game stakes were doubled from a $500 to $1,000 buyin. As a result the player mix changed and it just wasn’t fun for me anymore.
Since returning from Vegas I have driven over 15,000 miles hitting up charity poker rooms in Michigan, Illinois and Indiana (think Rounders��😉 along with a couple of nearby casinos and social clubs in Kentucky and Ohio.

FWIW Poker Atlas, Facebook and Google Maps have made this task a whole lot less challenging. When I started chasing down poker rooms in the early 90’s. The only resources I had were Cardplayer magazine and a big book of maps. Cardplayer showed tournaments and had some ads for larger rooms. They also published a Cardroom Guide (which unfortunately I lost while on a trip to California) listing poker rooms by state. Back then I think there were only 7 states with legal poker – in the Midwest there were riverboats and tribal casinos. Out west most of the places outside Nevada were poker only.

On the other hand in the 90s just about every casino in Vegas, Reno and Atlantic City had a poker room.

The internet and Mapquest made it a bit easier but there was no comprehensive source for rooms. Nowadays I can look a room up on PA or Bravo and get the address, hours, phone, number of tables and so on. Punch the address into Google Maps and get routed right to the door.

FWIW, there are still poker rooms that aren't on PA or Bravo. Typically small towns with a single table, or some of the smaller Texas clubs.

Congrats on getting such a productive trip in. A big downswing in the local high stakes games has me itching for some small and mid stakes road trip fun.
