So is everyone sick in Las Vegas?

Seems like every year, poker players from all over the world come to Vegas with their bad hygiene habits. They play and shuffle their chips which then gets mixed in with other chips and dealer hands. Eventually one person gets sick and then everyone has a cough, runny nose, or a sore throat.

yup

Nope, I take vitamins, exercise daily and wear a mask this time of year at the tables.

And wash the table funk off my hands with that foamy soap before I touch food or almost anything on my body.

In 2019 I got rip-roaring sick toward the latter part of a 12-day WSOP trip.

In 2024 I did not get even a sniffle in 12 days at the WSOP.

I was here for the psychological sickness... viruses are boring.

My 9 day wsop trip had an added 3 days due to a positive Covid test. Yes, everyone is sick.

In July 2021 I came home with covid, most sick I've ever been.

Google Vegas Throat ?

"(Vegas throat) is a condition of (a) chronically hoarse-sounding voice, like that gravel voice you get," said Dr. Sharon Frank, one of three doctors who practice at Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists of Nevada.

"Most patients describe that it comes on with what they see as a post-nasal drip, that mucus is draining down the back of their throat causing them to chronically want to clear the back of their throat."

Other symptoms include severe dryness of the throat and irritation, scratchiness and sometimes itchiness, Frank said, all of which result in a change in the voice and the way it sounds.

The main cause of Vegas throat is dryness, she said, although high levels of dust, pollution and pollen play contributing factors."

The BEST advice any tourist can ever get here is , "Definitely, stay hydrated. Drink water ALL fu*king day and night. You'll feel 100% better if you do than if you don't"

This year?

I have gotten sick every single year I’ve played at the wsop including this year already. This year was particularly bad as it took 10 days before I started feeling better.

This year?

Yes. Just tested negative this morning.

Every year, a week into the series the whole house was sick. Dry air, crazy temperature difference between inside (Rio = ice box) and outside, alcohol, drugs, messed up sleep schedule and probably a couple more factors.

When traveling alone I've usually managed to stay healthy though.

back in May I played some pit table games for a few hours. it was so smokey that I got a deep nasty cough for a few hours after.

I'm glad at least the poker rooms are non-smoking

I'm not a mask guy but you really have to be careful with your hands. I hand sanitize at least every two hours and obvs give them a good wash before and after the bathroom and eating.

seems to work ok. getting at least semi reasonable sleep is important too and eating healthy. chugging red bulls and getting 5 hours sleep a night prolly lowers your immunity

Sufficient sleep boosts your immune system.

When I was at the WSOP registration window just a few days ago,

The guy next to me was there bc “his
roommate had COVID and needed a refund”

Yowza.

I just realized I wasn't sick with the "Vegas cough" this year or last. In the many years before, I picked it up about 50% of the time. Maybe my paranoia over covid (I'm old and fat, e.g. "at risk") was actually worthwhile.

I get a good solid 4 1/2 hours (sometimes 5!) per night.

my friend who has been crushing WSOP this summer just tested positive for covid

Id be happy if the disgusting mf’rs just washed their hands with soap after using the restroom.

It’s summer vacation time, everyone in tourist cities are super sick, if it’s not filthy poker players in Vegas, it’s a busload of grimy 8th graders on the national mall in DC. Washing your hands will do basically nothing but I guess never going to a tourist destination again would be effective. When you do get sick that’s the time for the indica joints with hash in them, better than NyQuil.

IMO, washing hands is very helpful when you're handling filthy cards and chips all day long. Maybe not as relevant in ordinary settings. Wearing a good mask, not the stupid cloth ones, is better than not wearing one. Whether sitting at the table or walking through the immense mobs when not at the table, you're in close proximity to hundreds of different people during the day.

It’s amazing with all the germs out there, that we’re not constantly sick all the time.

Really makes you wonder…
