The NHL Thread
For the 5 of us who post NHL stuff, here you go. Officially the season starts Tuesday October 11, although there were tw
scorching take: i would not sign a 30 year old 5'11"* goalie to a $62m/8 contract
* also he's probably not even 5'11"
Skjei 7 years for 7M average? He’s 30, he’s not even that good is he?
so many terrible contracts being thrown out there
either nhl gms know some secret internal next gen analytics or they are complete morons
(very possible they have that, the nba does, big reason why evan turner kept getting big contracts despite mediocore stats/public perception was because he did certain things well that few other players did well so a bunch of teams would often feel like he was the missing puzzle piece)
forgot what it was and can't find it but it was something very specific, think it had to do with spacing, like people he passed to had most distance from themselves to a defender or something like that - heavily implying he understood the game well and made big impacts that didn't necessarily show up on the stat sheet
if someone can find it please share
Playing behind Josi he will be very good. He's a solid top pairing guy and a really good 2nd pairing dman. Preds other signings today are iffy, they are going to have a very old core over the next few years.
Yeah, but they improved their scoring a lot. They could have a very strong top 2 lines, maybe only for a year or two, but they could contend with this lineup assuming things go well.

A lot of guys got paid fair value on next year's cap figure. And then GMs figure gravy based on some of the projections coming.
7M is definitely the new 5M. That much is clear. 5M is the new 3M.
All of them are going by projected cap as they are thinking it is going up same amount as this year the next few years.
That is my 1st guess.
sebastian aho to the penguins for 2 years at the minimum. wow incredible signing, not sure how they pulled that one off
Maybe the defenseman is the better player.
The Latest Brian Burke interview about Leaf's current situation.
i guess ~everyone has been signed, because there's almost nothing left on the market...
remaining t20 point scorers from last season:
1. Joe Pavelski - retired
2. Daniel Sprong - one of the only guys on this list under 30, probably worth signing
3. James van Riemsdyk - can still play, someone will probably sign him
4. Tyler Johnson - washed
5. Justin Schultz - washed
6. Kevin Shattenkirk - washed
7. Mike Hoffman - washed
8. Max Pacioretty - retired
9. Filip Zadina - substance abuse problems
10. Kyle Okposo - wasn't completely horrible last season, but should probably go out on top
11. Blake Wheeler - washed
12. Cal Clutterbuck - sucks
13. Michael McLeod - was decent last season, is under 30, worth signing
14. Ryan Suter - wasn't completely horrible last season, someone will probably sign him
15. Calen Addison - was like the 2nd worst player on the sharks last season
16. Kailer Yamamoto - probably sucks, but might be worth signing for cheap
17. Tyson Barrie - washed
18. Nick Cousins - sucks, but somebody will probably sign him because rangz
19. Dominik Kubalik - was the worst player on the sens last season
20. Alexander Nylander - sucks
iirc sprong is one of the worst defenders in the league and it definitely outweighs his above average offense - hence why lack of interest, only useful in offensive zone starts and limited situations
it's probably overstated. he was mediocre on detroit last season, but the year before that on seattle was their best player by xg. so as a u30 ufa, he's worth a shot somewhere. a good team should definitely pick him up if the cost is ~nothing.
was trying to think of a good comparison and i think boban marjanovich is it
I thought I heard Pacioretty wasn’t retiring…but maybe that might not be his choice anymore.
LMAO!
To no one’s surprise, fans of the Maple Leafs are a miserable bunch.
According to a recent poll for Casino.org , supporters of the team registered an unhappiness score of 73.14%. That ranked behind fans of the Calgary Flames (89%) and the Arizona Coyotes (81%), which relocated to Utah under new management in April.
The survey — which asked 2,000 NHL fans using a weighted index — assessed factors such as Stanley Cup optimism, contentment with management, mood changes when players get injured, irritation levels when their team loses, and overall game-day experience.
Nearly 60% of fans believe that Toronto doesn’t stand a chance of making it to the Stanley Cup Finals, while almost 46% currently don’t trust the Leafs’ management.

Oh I agree but some players would take being out of the the limelight and making 8 million a year. I cant imagine playing in Toronto with that media scrutiny

On Monday, the city of Calgary broke ground on its new arena, which is expected to be completed in 2027 and will replace the NHL's second-oldest barn. This follows a decade of contentious wrangling over who would own the building and who would pay for it. In the end, the Flames will cover just $356 million (CAD) of the $1.22 billion project, with the city and province on the hook for the rest.
oh thank the gods that we have this kind of socialism, a consortium of oil billionaires being given $864,000,000 (plus cost overruns probably) to build a hockey rink for them
At the ceremony, new renderings of the arena were revealed, along with its name: Scotia Place.
The average American hockey fan might be seeing this, and thinking Isn't there already a Scotia Place? This is understandable. I am here to help.
It's actually very simple. Scotia Place, with the naming rights owned by Scotiabank, Canada's third-largest bank, is not to be confused with the hoary Scotiabank Saddledome, the Flames' current building. It is also not to be confused with Scotiabank Arena, which is where the Maple Leafs play in Toronto. It is also also not to be confused with the Senators' home in Ottawa, which used to be called Scotiabank Place. (It's now the Canadian Tire Centre, with the rights owned by Canadian Tire, a Canadian retail chain/currency issuer that mostly sells things that aren't tires.) But you would never mistake Scotiabank Place for Scotia Place; I have more faith in you than that.
None of these buildings are in Nova Scotia. That would just be confusing.
While we're here, I also trust you not to mix up the Winnipeg Jets' home, which until a couple years ago was Bell MTS Place, and before that the MTS Centre, with the Bell Centre in Montreal. I don't think I even need to mention the obvious differences between Vancouver's Rogers Arena and Edmonton's Rogers Place. (Rogers Centre is entirely separate. That's where the Blue Jays play. Get out of here with your absurd questions.) Rogers and Bell, of course, are the two largest owners of the Maple Leafs, who you'll recall play at Scotiabank Arena, instead of where they should logically play, which is TD Garden, named for Canada's second-largest bank Toronto-Dominion, but that is in Boston, which is also the name of a Canadian pizza chain.
As a reminder, Canadians can watch many of these games on The Sports Network (TSN), majority owned by Bell—not to be confused with Sportsnet, owned by Rogers and previously part-owned by Bell.
There are eight companies in Canada.
got that? there'll be a test later
American checking in...just call it "Calgary Flames Arena (except when other events are going on inside)"
ldo how hard is that?
