Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.
Tory leadership contest is quickly turning into farce. Trump has backed Boris, which should be reason enough for anyone with half a brain to exclude him.
Of the other candidates Rory Stewart looks the best of the outsiders. Surprised to see Cleverly and Javid not further up the betting, but not sure the Tory membership are ready for a brown PM.

Regarding the LD leadership contest, Jo Swinson is miles ahead of any other candidate (and indeed any of the Tory lot). Should be a shoe in.
Finally, it's Groundhog Day in Labour - the more serious the anti-Semitism claims get, the more Corbyn's cronies write their own obituary by blaming it on outlandish conspiracy theories - this week, it's apparently the Jewish Embassy's fault...

I mean so far there's nothing much happened, looks like Con/Ref are doing a fair bit better (especially in the latter case) than expected, but Labour are getting the huge majority as expected. The question is what happens when, as I expect to be the case, we get midway through the Max Headroom premiership and on anything substantial, absolutely nothing has changed. Thoughts?
People have different ideas on what your substantial means.
If as I expect you’re talking about immigration and the boats then the France election results will be very interesting.
If someone else was thinking of support for the worst off, a functional NHS and housing market and adequate utility companies they’ll probably be disappointed.
I was in Waltham Cross the other day, and my god what a total shithole a normal working class suburb of London has become under austerity, the people looking for all the world as if they’d been beaten up and robbed. Which metaphorically of course they have.
Rebuilding is a huge task that’s clearly beyond Starmer, a drone with no imagination.
Getting only mid 30s percent of the vote against this widely reviled government is a failure not a success and looks ominous for 2029.

Huge parliamentary majority masking the story of a country divided into two wrt share of the vote, one progressive minded the other reactionary.
In reality though both views are often found to coexist in the same person. NewerLabour will probably attempt to reflect this.

So the SNP results were as bad as the exit poll predicted. Excellent. There will be a fair bit of infighting as the ones who've lost their seats try to get into Hollyrood for the 2026 elections.

Re the discussions about vote share it’s been a completely different picture in Scotland. Labour have increased by 17.1%. The SNP have lost more than the Conservatives reducing by 15.1% and 12.3% respectively.

If labour ignore immigration issues (or worse pull the 'racist/bigot' card on anyone who tries to talk about it), then labour will get ****ed up next election by the little tin-pots on the right.

I DGAF about immigration, but I am sick and tired of it being such a part of the discourse because TPTB don't tackle it (or tackle the reasons people feel they are being side-lined by immigrant numbers where they live)
