Cobra Kai - Karate Kid 30 Years Later

"Strike first!"
"Strike hard!"
"No mercy!"

Anyone watching this?

Here's the trailer for Cobra Kai...

"Cobra Kai takes place thirty years after the original film and follows a "down-and-out Johnny Lawrence, who seeks redemption by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai karate dojo, reigniting his rivalry with a now successful Daniel LaRusso, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi. The show is about two men addressing past demons and present frustrations the only way they know how: through karate."

And the second wave not until November, then the third in "2025". I could see this if somehow they haven't filmed the second batch, let alone the third. But if all 15 are in the can then this seems like a tease.

Also, I feel like the show gathered a lot of its buzz in large part because the most recent three seasons all aired within 18 months, while it has now been nearly two years since season four, which is comparable to the pause between seasons two and three due to COVID. They might be in for a rude awakening that a lot of folks have moved on. I mean, this isn't Stranger Things or Black Mirror.

I think what they may find is a large segment of the audience just ignores it until all three parts are released.

If anyone is still following along, the pt 2 trailer dropped, and part 2 will be available November 15th.

Season 6 part 2 released today. I enjoyed it, but I'm easy to please with the nostalgia.

Part 3 comes in February and then it'll be over. Can't wait to see what the final 5 episodes bring!

I'm going to wait to be able to do all three parts at once. And it seems like the hype around this has really died down. Maybe it reignites when the end really is near.

I get why Netflix wanted to split the final season into 3 parts, for additional subscriptions. But I do think it killed a lot of the excitement surrounding the show.

Watched the first three eps. The ridiculous cheese and predictability has been ramped up to a level I'm not even enjoying anymore.

But there was a twist I wasn't expecting and they did a good job with that. It almost made up for an absolutely ridiculous scene involving Sam and a fighter from the new villain team.

That happened to me somewhere late in S2, lol. Glad to hear I didn't miss much by dipping out then.

Trailer for season 6 part 3 dropped Monday, last episodes drop 2/13.

In case anyone is still interested.

Last 5 episodes were predictable but enjoyable imo. Just enough fun and cheese to make it worthwhile

I've been catching up on the last 18 episodes. I think I am halfway through and it is better than I expected. The first episode after the long hiatus was terrible so it took me a while to fire it back up. Chosen becoming one of the best characters was not on my bingo card.

I binged the last 15 and by the end I was tired of it. I wish I had broken up the episodes of Season 6. Ending was good. Predictable and cheesy in a good way as was stated in this thread. They got a lot more mileage out of this than I ever thought possible.

Just finished the final 10 Cobra Kai episodes recently. I think it's a consensus that it was wrapped up well and they gave a good ending to the characters and the series, based on the reviews/podcasts I've watched.

Although the end results were satisfying, it was a bit of a stretch of the imagination in how they got there, with the Sekai Tekai. I think some of the antics involving Terry Silver in this season and past seasons, are quite wild and far removed from what the original movies and even this Cobra Kai series is about.

I dropped out after the first episode from the first batch of season 6. It was just too… I dunno…. I’ll knock it out someday I’m sure, but not for awhile.

It was the worst of the 15 by far. We quit for a while after that episode because it was so cheesy in a bad way.

At what point does the final 15 correct itself?

I think it started with the 2nd episode but it may have been a little later. Johnny gets funny again and Chozen steals the show. The more it’s on the adults the better it is.

I think the 5th episode is good place to jump in, if you want to skip alot of the setup to the big tournament. You get to see the final events before everyone goes to Barcelona.

I watched the 2010 Karate Kid movie just now. It was ok but definitely falls short of having the impact that the original did, and it was probably worse in almost everyway. Having 12 year olds instead of teenagers didn't help. Also the cultural difference having it set in China didn't help. This 2010 verion of a Kreese didn't deliver the sinister nature as well as the original.

I didn't really ever think of giving this version a chance. But I was surpised to see Ralph Macchio show up in the Karate Kid Legends movie with Jackie Chan coming up this year. So if that's the case, I have to guess that movie would be half decent, or else Macchio would not want to be part of it, as to tarnish the legacy of the movies and the Cobra Kai series that he was involved with.

The Karate Kid movies weren't great. 1 and 2 were good though with 3 being a disappointment. But the Cobra Kai series really help to elevate their signifigance.

I personally think they stuck the landing in a decent way. Final episode was well done, both bringing back the nostalgia and also giving good conclusions to the whole arc of the series, which was really what it was all about. Redemption for Johnny, showing how relationships can change, etc.

Honestly though the whole Sekai Tikai thing was dumb. I get why they did it, but all the way through it was forced, and then the final buildup felt like it was just a waste of time. Even introducing all those new characters went nowhere.

Sekai Tekai and it's very wild and loose rules, as crazy as they were, allowed the story to give us the satisfying finale for the characters. I'd have to dispute your point saying it was dumb and a waste of time, given that it lead us to the ending that we received.

Show

To introduce Kwon and then kill him off didn't seem like a waste of time, but rather necessary. His death allowed Miguel to be his replacement and for Johnny to be his sensei in a CK uniform. And his death allowed a break in the tournament where it could be moved to the new location in San Fernando Valley, California.

I never thought leading up to the finale, that the season would end in Johnny getting one last victory as a competitor on the mat in front of his hometown audience. Unexpected for me but a really cool way to do things. Ofcourse, as tie breaker rule where the two sensei would compete is totally ridiculous, but once again, it gave us a great ending.

All the Miyagi Do team transferring over to the Cobra Kai team, mid tournament seemed stupid, but at the same time, I can clearly see why it was done, and gave us the ending we wanted. The show is called Cobra Kai and Johnny is the main character, so it's only fitting that he and Miguel get their series ending moments in those uniforms.

The plot lines involving Silver, Kreese and the Korean Cobra Kai which involved murder, kidnapping and arson were quite wild. I heard a reviewer of the show make a comment that put things in perspective, saying "its just kids karate!"

As a huge fan of this series I'm in the midst of doing a series rewatch. I'm just at the end of season 2 right now.

I'm one of those fans who speaks highly about the series whenever I have a chance to discuss it. I was watching it when it first came out in 2018 and immediately told people I knew to check it out. I haven't gone as far as to own any Cobra Kai merchandise or t-shirts but I could see myself wearing one, some day haha.

Finally finished season 6. One question that I'll word in a way that has no spoilers:

In the final final fight, they show a lot of the fight and whats going on in the arena, but they more than once cut out to show some guys watching in a bar and give them some dialogue. Who were those guys?
