Christmas in July: KJs in the HJ Facing Raise from a UTG Loose Passive

Christmas in July: KJs in the HJ Facing Raise from a UTG Loose Passive

It’s Christmas in July at MGM Springfield. As Dan GK wrote in my last post, the high-hand promotion gives out 325 envelopes, one per hour. Three envelopes have $10,000, fifteen with $5,000, etc., in total $285K. The room overfills with loose passive recreational players. My bankroll got dangerously low, so I have been playing lower-rake games until now…

V (covers hero) is a fifty-five year old loose passive calling station. As he dribbled away 300 dollars over three orbits, his wife stood behind him and said she lost 75 dollars on the slots. He has limped about 60 percent of his hands. He has called down top-pair bad-kicker several times. He has not yet open-raised.

Hero (295) assumes V knows little.

OTTH

V open raises UTG+1 to 10. Hero in HJ with KJss? Hero considers 3betting, then thinks “after limping 15 hands sequentially, an open-raise by this V indicates a strong hand.” Hero calls. Blinds call. 4-way.

Flop (35 after rake): Ah6s8c

Everyone checks.

Turn: 3h

Everyone checks.

River 9x.

V bets 10.

Everyone folds

Well played I think. You can't bluff with no equity in this spot when the pot is so multi-way.

Pre-flop is the main decision point I guess. I don't like 3betting this guy's EP open though, and I'm not really interested in folding this hand, even if it might be the best play on paper (high rake, against a strong range, plenty of players behind us).

What's the question here?

You're basically playing BINGO. No sense in trying to apply strat or theory. You didn't make a hand, so it seems like a trivial fold.

Just fold pre. and I don't think it's close.

Would be much happier to call 76s or even 86s, but it's also fine to just fold a stupid amount vs. this guy's 5% range or whatever.

As played on the flop, he's way more likely to play AA this way than KK/QQ (hoping to hit quads and win an envelope). Probably always just bets AK.

fold pre

Calling pf is fine if the players behind you are tight.

Not much you can do with the runout.
