2024 World Series of Poker May 28th to July 17th ***No Spoilers***
The 2024 WSOP will take place at Horseshoe Las Vegas and Paris Las Vegas from May 28 to July 17, 2024, with the Main Event running from July 3 to July 17. The Main Event – poker’s undisputed freezeout world championship – will have four starting days, beginning on Wednesday, July 3. Players may also register directly on Day 2.
Here’s another question I was thinking of last night. Since the poker boom which runner-up would have actually been a better champion for poker than the actual winner?
Imo…
Williams - young black guy champion in the height of the poker boom era would have trumped the “fossilman” novelty.
Demidov - maybe not much difference but the Russian market way larger than the Danish one.
Holmes - first black winner, complete rec. would have been more of a mainstream story than high roller German pro winning.
Outside of those i think the winners have been better than the runner-ups or a negligible difference.

Darvin Moon
but if the question extends a bit outside the boom I would def pick TJ CLOUTIER over ****ing FTP founder Jesus Ferguson
Get rid of the Thunderdome rail horsechit for final table
Go back to a setting like 2005, with small crowd mostly blacked out and spotlight on final table.
Have a smallish (100 or so?) crowd, elevated so they can see most of action with announcer..so it’s not constant run over to rail …”I have KQ, he has JJ” chit every all in.
Increase time delay to render assistance behind the scenes to be mostly unhelpful
Product is quite bad right now and getting worse each year. But a few simple things can fix
Yeah what was with Tamayo having to explain all the cards to the rail every hand? Could they really not see **** at all?
Really disappointed in Jack Effel that he’s allowing FT player’s teams to basically run sims and use RTA at the table. That’s exactly what it is when the player is running to the laptops every chance they get. This has to be stopped, it’s beyond egregious.
Having the laptops out and the sims being ran is objectively an awful look. I've said it before a million times but this generation of high stakes online pros doesn't give one **** about the broader poker ecosystem. They are actively destructive until something happens that could potentially affect their bottom line then its all boo hoos and crying to the community for support.
**** em all
Def nit the person I remember. But then again, I don’t follow much less idolize them.
I will say his rail action did reinforce my recent experience. Was in LV in early/mid June. Not there for WSOP but we’re staying at Paris so made couple trips down just to see and experience it.
One visit, walking back to Horseshoe casino from HS tournament area, we bumped into McKeehan. Honestly I did not even notice him. Wife who is more of a f@n than I did. He was not in a tournament. Wasn’t rushing anywhere. Wasn’t with anyone. Wife made some cordial comments. Wasn’t asking for photo. Just a hey you are xxx moment. Ask how he was doing and wished him good luck. But he was a real D*** with an attitude.
She was marginally rooting for Tomayo (wasn’t her fav but ahead of some in particular Griff, who she did not really like) until she saw Mcheenen on his rail. Total turn against Tomayo. When got heads up she was all in for Griff, actually even at three.

Tamayo has been backed by Joe forever lol. They're not just "friends"
and yes Joe is a weird freak irl
Didn't see it mentioned here, and sorry in advance if it already was, but while the Main was running The Blez took down a $50K high roller with $2 million up top, beating Jesse Lonis heads up. Dude can play.

Not long after he was interviewed in daniels vlog and said "all the high roller players are overrated, have a small % of themselves and are not good" a lot of people thought he was being facetious, and maybe he was or ... maybe not ? He kinda dominated the final couple tables.
Griff was blasting and was hoping to close the show quick with variance landing on his side. Almost did it, too.
This was almost definitely his best strategy. Even wo the rail aid, Tomayo was going to have the edge esp in a protracted match. This is exactly what makes Lena call so punty. Mathematically it might be close but with the edge he had over Griff, why take such a high variance approach.
It's a easy fix. Players need to stay at the table during play (except for bathroom, break, etc). No help from your rail for advice. Tamayo's rail had people with open laptops feeding him information. The guy was running back looking at a computer constantly. How Griff didn't call the floor is beyond me. It just shows how the dorks have taken over poker.
Because under current rules, there wasn’t anything being done that was against the rules. Floor could maybe make a best interest ruling. But to expect floor to devise a who new rule and protocol on fly is not reasonable.
I expect WSOP or maybe TDA will do something before next year.

There is definitely a rule against using RTA while at the table. I’d say constantly running over to your team with open laptops running sims could be construed as using RTA at the table. Effel needs to step up and clean this up.
I think we're long past the days of the WSOP winner having a major impact on poker. You can pick any of the nine final tableists and I don't think it would move the needle much for the game, although I think it's good to have a "fighting champion" so people can interact with them and play with them. Tamayo may not be the winner everyone wanted, but he seems like a Raymer type. Solid grinder who will keep showing up and playing.
When you talk about the legacy of a Main Event, it's not just the winners who determine that. Often times it is the supporting actors who have the most memorable impact. 2009 is as much remembered for the deep runs by Moon and Ivey as it is for Cada eventually winning. The A-story in 2015 was Daniel Negreanu's run, not Joe McKeehan crushing everyone. People like Will Kassouf, Gaelle Baumann, and Nick Rigby arguably got more rub from the Main Event than the guys who won.
From that standpoint, this year will probably be remembered as the Kristen Foxen year first and foremost. I'd guess that she spent the most time on the streamed TV tables out of the entire field. I'd say she'll benefit more than anyone from the edited CBS episode repeats, but those don't seem to have anywhere near the reach they did in the peak ESPN era. All the same, this was her Main Event more than it was anyone else's. Her deep run was the A-story.
Some of the WSOP payouts are wild
Serock - Seems fairly standard tbh. Just unlucky Lena woke up with a hand even though he will be flatting strong hands.
Rast - Not great but it was for like 22bbs
Foxen - Pretty bad spot but if she does have some fold equity and if Serock ever folds Ax people would lose their minds about what a great bluff it was
Lena - Vs online crushers it's probably close, but against an amateur I'm not sure how great you're doing vs a 1.5x pot shove. Just not sure that's the spot to take playing fairly deep 3
I really don't have a strong opinion on the Kim play yet, but I do think "How dead are you when you're wrong?" has to be a consideration. One thing that's lost in the hand is that he actually had reasonable equity even after getting called (32%). Unless you're up against exactly AA or KK, you're actually going to suck out a lot against the rest of the calling range. Doesn't mean it was a good play, but we're forgetting all the runouts where the board will bring gore against stuff Astedt can call with like AQ, QQ, JJ, TT. K6s would even have 28.7% against a dominating hand like AKo. You look silly when you get called AND the board runs out clean, but you have two ways to win.

They made a big deal about players using solvers in the tournament area. Surely this would extend to whatever was going on on Tamayo’s rail. Or is the ME ft not considered part of the tournament area?

I can actually understand this at the wsop main final table a once in a lifetime thing with life changing money.
What's infuriating are young pros who poison their own player pools sucking every drop of fun out of the games for rec players.
Good forbid they give up an ounce of short term ev for the long term good of the game.
Anyone who thinks the running RTA while playing isn't rampant online is naive at best.
Pretty easy to disprove in like 5 seconds:
