Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
Looks like 2004...
I used cdjapan... they have search feature where they will track it down for you on the used market in Japan.
DVD is the only format, and I am okay with that. I use an Oppo 203 player that has outstanding upscaling processing... it's not the same as a modern HD or UHD disc, but it's watchable and enjoyable.

Japanese Movie/[Secondhand] Ginrei No Hate (Snow Trail)
DVD 1 x 1980 yen August 27, 2004 release
TBL greatest movie ever made.
I don't care about anything technical you can keep your godfather and citizen kane I'll take the dude never rolling a single frame and the narrator coming in halfway thru the movie to ask the main character if he has to curse so much.
absolutely perfect and I've seen it at least 100x never love it any less.
I'll check back in after the next 100+ viewings n let you know if I have stopped loving it a little more with every viewing.
ps: oh and how perfect is it that the dude doesn't have to explain it twice to PSH of course the greatest actor ever is gonna get it immediately and call him the dude for the rest of the film.
Not sure why I never have, but always wanted to see Grosse Pointe Blank. I've heard it was pretty entertaining.
It was. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
The scenes with Alan Arkin were solid gold.
Don't kill anybody for a few days. See what it feels like.
Yeah, I came across that the other night as well. John Cusack in his prime.
Solid two-fer with High Fidelity. Rom coms for dudes.
The chemistry between Aykroyd and Cusack is a delight. Joan is hilarious as the secretary. Jeremy Piven always excels at being “best friend guy.”
love grosse point blank

♥ The Dude abides.
Bwahahaha... that's a'nice!
Grosse Point Blank and High Fidelity are in my top 20, as is TBL. In fact, I think I’ll watch all 3 over the next couple of days! Thanks for the recommendations!!
Thelma - not everday there's an action film featuring the very elderly. Richard Roundtree's last film.
Quite a lot of fun. It doesn't flinch in showing how isolating old age can be, and how desperate some can be to retain a sense of independence. That's all balanced out with humour and great performances. Parker Posey and Clark Gregg are always good to watch.
Really enjoyed this one. Their "Cool Guys Don't Look At Explosions" gag might be the best version of that I've seen.
Last two films I watched were A Zed and Two Naughts by Peter Greenaway and Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits. I doubt Time Bandits needs much of a review. It's goofy fun (and Apple TV is turning it into a series).
Greenaway's film, however, is a bit more complicated. I've seen a number of his films and, while strange to say the least, they are always superbly shot and constructed.
This one is begins with a car accident caused by a swan. Two women, the wives of twin brothers, are killed, and the driver, an older woman, loses her leg in the accident. The brothers are zoologists who begin to watch a David Attenborough's series about the beginning of life on earth and its evolution. They grieve in an unusual way by filming dead animals and an apple decaying. The subplot concern the one legged woman and a surgeon who is also a forger of Vermeer paintings. Another woman is a stand in for Vermeer' wife.
The one legged woman gives birth to twins and somehow the twin brothers are the father. The one legged woman has her other leg amputated to achieve symmetry and eventually becomes the partner of a man with no legs who will take on the role of father. Oh, and there's another subplot about animals being released from the zoo ( a Zed and Two Naughts, get it?) and a number of zebras, of course, because the Zed you know.
As typical of Greenaway's films, the mise-en-scene is carefully controlled, using symmetrical compositions throughout to match the twinning going on in the film.
I thoroughly enjoy Greenaway's films (I haven't seen The Baby of Macon, which I hear is thoroughly disgusting) even if I have little idea what they are about. Like Cronenberg's, they seem to be about body horror at times, but Greenaway's are hard to pigeonhole.
This film is "about" symmetry and grief. Maybe.

perhaps that is where the title of this song found inspiration from (great song btw)
I had never had heard of Iron Claw, a movie depicting the (real life based) tribulations of a family through pro wrestling in the 70-90s. Really powerful stuff I highly recommend and it could be added to the already solid af list of excellent combat movies

at first i thought you were reviewing iron sky, which is an amazing film and sadly only lacks dem titties
The Big Lebowski (1994)
The toiletseat’s up, man!
You have no frame of reference, Donny: You are like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie and wants to…
An entire movie with no frame of reference!: It’s down there somewhere. Let me look again!
But it does have a plot that includes Rites of Spring, inept tricksters, and still jerking off manually (Jeff Bridges' worst role, (and yet, and yet he nails it!)).
Actually, not so much a plot, but plot elements: They really tie the room together!
I forgot to post the Pop quiz. As always, the answers are behind the paywall on my OnlyFans page.
Longlegs - FBI agent Lee Harker's partner knocks on door, gets shot in head. Does Lee call in and wait for backup before going into the house? Of course not. This is merely the first of many instances of Lee acting in a way that is inconsistent not only with her role, but with the way any human being would react.
It was pretty good, quite scary at times. Nick Cage was well, Nick Cage. I didn't find him creepy at all. By the end of the film, I was rolling my eyes at the silliness.

Great direction and cinematography but the movie is let down by its script and again it seems that horror movies of late can't land the final act after Maxxxine.
I thought the same about Longlegs at first, but the way she acts is directly related to her forgotten relationship with Longlegs. Her actions are supposed to be incongruous.
Maxxxine Waters, now there's a scary movie!
