British Politics

Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.

Tory leadership contest is quickly turning into farce. Trump has backed Boris, which should be reason enough for anyone with half a brain to exclude him.

Of the other candidates Rory Stewart looks the best of the outsiders. Surprised to see Cleverly and Javid not further up the betting, but not sure the Tory membership are ready for a brown PM.

Regarding the LD leadership contest, Jo Swinson is miles ahead of any other candidate (and indeed any of the Tory lot). Should be a shoe in.

Finally, it's Groundhog Day in Labour - the more serious the anti-Semitism claims get, the more Corbyn's cronies write their own obituary by blaming it on outlandish conspiracy theories - this week, it's apparently the Jewish Embassy's fault...

Keir Starmer has said he wants a broad new security agreement with the EU. It could end up being very broad indeed.

Berlin wants to turn the British prime minister’s proposed security pact into a veritable Brexit mega deal: encompassing everything from agricultural rules to the Erasmus student exchange program.

“We very much welcome the initiative of a security pact. It’s not only security, it’s broader: so I would call it a Security and Cooperation Agreement between the U.K. and the European Union,” Germany’s ambassador to the U.K. Miguel Berger told POLITICO.

So it appears that the contemptuous liars, reeves and starmer are actually going to cut back on infrastructure projects they supposedly support.

I've been fairly soft on this Labour government but this is bizarre. Clearly they want to cut back on these projects or they could just as easily keep quiet and carry on.

They brazenly lied about not needing to have cuts, raise taxes or borrow. They will raise some taxes but prefer some cuts as well. These are the most convenient to admit too.

Eh, my read is Reeves is grandstanding and she wants to show she's being serious. Classic overcompensation. Let's hope she settles down and doesn't develop a dopamine habit from such things.

Yeah, she's definitely grandstanding. However, she could grandstand and still not make cuts to investments in infrastructure.

22% pay deal for junior doctors. That's quite the pay deal. I'm happy for them, but I'm a little concerned that other unions are gonna see that and... we're on a road back to the early 70s....

A senior judge has issued an arrest warrant for far-right campaigner Stephen Yaxley-Lennon - better known by his alias Tommy Robinson - after learning he has left the country on the eve of a major legal case against him.

Yaxley-Lennon left the UK by a Eurotunnel train on Sunday night, despite having been arrested by Kent Police under counter-terrorism powers.

lol it's like the early days of IDS

and....so what if there's no red card for two yellows?

Was pretty surprised to read today on twitter that 50k people turned up to a "far right" event he organised at the weekend - not a sausage about it in the MSM.

I suspect our union will be all over this and [strike]we'll[/strike] they'll be striking before the academic year is up.

Reeves is apparently trying to stick to recommendations by independent pay panels, so you might just get something decent without striking.

Inflation, here we come!

Only suckers believe you can fit 50,000 into Trafalgar Square with a stage too.

Sorry your boy isn’t getting the coverage you think he deserves.

They were after 35%. They will learn that, in the words of Sir Mick Jagger, 'You can't always get what you want.' And there is a particular need to retain NHS staff. Other unions may find that they don't have quite the same leverage, or indeed popularity. It probably won't be like the '70s, with an 'annual pay round', when the unions all waited for the Ford offer and then demanded inflationary parity. Inflation is quite low again now and the unions are a bit of a busted flush, not least because of their wrecking behaviour in the '70s.

I take it the BBC counts as MSM.

And the Daily Mail.

'Thousands' are reported, but 50,000 is not at all likely. (Doubt there've been that many in Trafalgar Square since VE-Day, if then.) Meanwhile he's skipped bail and left the country again and is still wanted for contempt.

You'll probably remember this

I think Mosley was living mainly abroad then as well. Came back a few times, always found it rather uncomfortable.

Thankfully the 17 year old boy who went on a stabbing rampage in a kid's dance class in Merseyside, killing two kids, was born in Cardiff according to the police and isn't, as twitter has been putting about, an asylum seeker or other immigrant.

Methinks the new chancellor is a, how can I put this... Cant Understand Normal Thinking

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has defended her decision to scrap winter fuel payments for around 10 million pensioners.

My twitter feed talked about this event quite a bit. I assure you the fact the child murderer (3 dead now) was a second generation African immigrant, as opposed to first generation, isn't perceived as the positive outcome you seem to think it is.

The motivation for the attack is being completely covered up, so we will never know. But most of the radicalization leading to violence in your nation takes place inside your nation, often by people born in it; and most sane people dont count that as a win.

Second or first generation immigrant is largely irrelevant. The optics are that a madman and/or immigrant (delete according to political leaning) decided to hack children to death, and he and his family were here due to the generosity of the British people and political system.

That warm welcome will only extend so far, and these incidents are becoming far too frequent. If Starmer doesn't get a grip on this quickly, he may as well roll the red carpet out for Farage in 5 years time.

It will be drip fed out eventually. On one hand, you can't just label crimes like these as terrorism until you are sure. However, on the other hand when the attacker was described as having been "born in Wales", it's bordering on gaslighting.

Thanks for your input but I think I know better than you how things are perceived here. No one will be surprised to learn that your twitter feed is totally racist though.

It's hardly the first time someone has gone on the rampage here - Hungerford and Dunblane precede it, both committed by white British males. I suppose they were radicalised here too.

This is the part where Elrazor tries to imply that someone born here is an immigrant because his parents where born overseas, and therefore (according to him) he's more likely to be a criminal.
