Venezuela

Venezuela

Is Venezuela lost for decades? Is it going to become a full blown pariah state? The opposition leader Guido seems like a moron. Looks like sanctions backfired for the 20th time in a row. If the generals are full blown Narcos, America's position is ****ed.

incredible take to claim that presidential immunity for official acts is an authoritarian prerogative, truly insane to claim that.

both France and Italy have similar constitutional provisions.

and yes both countries don't define what "official acts" exactly means, which means giving courts the power to decide which actions are covered by immunity and which aren't

I wonder how much support Maduro would get if the US didn’t inflict that country with sanctions.

Is the opposition party in Venezuela to be trusted? I know Maduro and his supporters are calling them Fascists, which I’m sure is bs.

I'm sure Maduro is playing great, and its just those pesky American sanctions that are mucking up his worker's paradise.

They don't help.

Last Venezuelan girl I met was interesting because she was living in Caracas and just on vacation in Colombia-- whereas pretty much every other Venezuelan I ever came across had emigrated. She works for some property management company based out of Miami and her English was excellent. Cool girl. She made some of the best arepas I've ever had.

Being able to play your enemies is part of statecraft. Look at IRI. They are openly more antagonistic to the US than Venezuela is. But they basically infiltrated the Democratic Party (especially under Obama) and Ivy League Universities, to get the Democrat Party to facilitate them gaining a ton of power and influence in the region.

Of course they are a horrible, barbaric violent regime with horrible ideas that should have died out 1000 years ago, and their own people hate them. But given all of that, it is impressive how they have been able to play the Democratic Party into supporting them as much as they have.

If you go these kind of scenarios to look for heroes, it is rare that you find many. If you're lucky, you might find a lesser of two evils, but even then you don't really know how it is going to play out in the future. History is filled with groups and people toppling oppressors who then end up bad or worse.

That doesn't mean people should shy away from opposing oppressive dingbats like Maduro or favoring alternatives, rather it means you should expect prolonged and messy affairs even if those alternatives manage some kind of victory.

That said, the biggest opposition to Chavez and his sucessor Maduro has been various coalitions (or rather one coalition that has been shifting) of parties who we would typically describe as having centre-left or social democratic programs. However, corruption in Venezuela is extremely high, so expect any party to be filled with less than stellar people.

It is however very hard to keep track of it all, as loyalist courts keep making parties or party coalition illegal, jailing their leadership and instead installing cronies into central positions. So what was an opposition party back then might now suddenly be something else entirely.

The sad but inevitable point when when the far left socialists starts killing and jailing the not-so-far-left socialists. Add a pinch of corruption, season with cronyism and let go to trial.

lol Westerners whining that the coup hasnt worked fast enough

It doesn't happen often but you're wrong on this one Victor.

Maybe both you and him are just wrong most of the time.

that would be impossible

that would be impossible

Funny, I was thinking the same thing when you implied Victor isn't often wrong. Off the top of my head, I cant think of anything he is correct on.

He knows what the West is all about. Only in this particular case re Venezuela, it's not appropriate to frame what is happening there as imperialism/West vs the people of Venezuela.

possibly, but then this would also be the first time the West was in the right

So Maduro appears to be arguing (((Zionists))) are behind a coup to overthrow him, and the Venezuelan people support him. Would say say that when autocrats make this argument it is generally true, but this is an exception?

Joe Biden and the entire state department are Zionists so hes certainly correct

Well it just seems very doubtful that Maduro would win a fair election. I've met dozens of Venezuelans and only ever knew one that was sympathetic to Chavez/Maduro and that was in 2009 before things really started getting bad there.

Pretty sure.

Kudos to Maria Corina for standing up and telling Stalin to go **** himself from a back of a pickup truck before heading of into hiding. It's a straight up mental illness.

I've tried so many times to make that dough/bread and just can't get it right.
