the olympics skew waaaayyy old
especially when held in time zones across the globe
everyone else is asleep or working when they're shown live

Look at what's being advertised. It's not like MSNBC or Fox News that have commercials for old people like long term insurance and reverse mortgages kind of stuff.

Those are good friends, John!

They are, Dom. I'm very fortunate.

Went to see some nonsense at the Royal Opera House tonight, but it is a grand theatre and I'm glad I experienced it. Man, you'd have to be one hell of a good singer to sing there. People seem to have a fascination with outliers, e.g. the Olympics, which they seem to believe are those able to touch the face of God. Or maybe I'm projecting.

I kinda like Snoop Dogg doing commentary during the Olympics.

And I'm noticing that more and more commercials are using '60s and '70s music (don't usually watched network tv but the Olympics). Certainly, advertisers aren't using this music to appeal to us of a certain age because we're not the target audience any longer.

Lots of older bands selling their catalogs for crazy money.

Had a great time in Milwaukee this week! Unfortunately the Brew Crew only won one out of 3. But it was loads of fun and we had great seats. We had tickets for the last 2 games in the second level right behind home plate. For the first game we just got walkups and they were good too. Same second level but behind 3rd base.

The first thing I learned was that Miller Park is now American Family Insurance Park. But it is a great place to watch a game. The Brewers are my adopted NL team as my White Sox are going for their 18th straight loss tonight.

We tailgated before each game eating and drinking and playing Euchre. Loads of fun! Got in a round of golf too. But of course the real draw was the sausage races. Wagering was involved and somehow I managed to choose the sausage who came dead last all 3 games?

We were also sitting a couple rows in front of legendary broadcaster Harry Doyle (aka Bob Ueker) although i couldn't quite get a good picture of him. I was able to get a good shot of Barrel Man though.

Was wondering if we have any other Euchre players here in the lounge? Really fun card game. I am guessing golddog with his Wisconsin roots and maybe Phat Mac since he seems seasoned and knowledgeable in all things card related.

not familiar with the nuances of euchre but trick based games are a lot of fun
older family frequently played bridge but the kids never really got to know the rules

It's pretty simple if you understand trick/trump based games. It has a few unique twists. But being an old man I wonder if these damn kids with their cellphones understand cards at all? All we did as kids (when not playing outside) was play cards. Euchre, pinoccle, poker, sheepshead, rummy, cribbage. spades, hearts, oh hell, canasta, bridge etc. etc. etc. if you had a deck of cards you would be entertained. I fully accredit my mediocre poker ability to having "card sense" from playing every kind of card game imagineable while growing up.

i consider myself somewhat of an expert in at least five different types of solitare

When there was nothing else to do my sister and I would play double solitare which can be a very exciting game. Speed is key!

I used to play a lot in the service when we were drinking beer. The only thing I remember is: "Never order up a bower!"

It was mainly Ohio kids who played it. Sheepshead was the Milwaukee guys.

You're a 19.

Nope, not euchre. We played a weird local thing called smear which might've been similar--it was about tricks and so on. Also tons of cribbage.

Some of my older relatives here in Missouri used to play euchre. But their favorite game was pitch.

Played a lot of bridge and cribbage in college. Probably too much.

Hit the streets and riot, pillage and burn. Life is short!

reading that made me think you were also playing canasta and think we're all phonies

back when a single digit child block parents used to rotate hosting garage bridge parties on folding card tables and chairs
nuts in a bowl and beers in the igloo

only other time hearing trick used outside halloween

Not to get political, but four no trump.

(Hell, despite not playing bridge for nearly 50 years, I still remember what that bid means.)

College was hearts almost every night. We introduced smear and got into that a little too. Quite a bit of cribbage if there were only two of us who didn't want to study.

Then I guess I need to go to seven spades.
