so I've got Covid and am quarantining for a few days....so I've decided to watch some of my comfort films that I haven't seen in awhile. First up...

Once, John Carney, 2007

Can't believe it's been 17 years since this was released and almost ten years since I've seen it. Crazy Winner of Best Song at the Oscars - quite a feat for a $100,000 film starring two unknown non-actors.

This is a miracle of a movie, at once wispy and with not much of a narrative, but at the same time incredibly well-made and

Covid? People still test for that?

The Kurt Russell trilogy of greatness is:
Big Trouble in Little China
Used Cars
Escape from New York

There are many other great ones but to me those are the big 3 and I make it a point to watch all 3 of those every year.

I've never heard of Used Cars. The quest begins. Snake sells used cars?

Not Snake but Rudy Russo. Another unforgettable character by Russell. I would say that Used Cars is easily on my "top 5" of all-time comedies. Hiliarious in many ways. I think you would love it!

Escape from New York is great, but hard to top this scene from Escape from L.A.

i tried hard to watch that movie 2-3 times - perhaps the only movie i've ever attempted to watch more than once

it was so bad it had transcended the so bad it's good phase of being bad and was just so bad it was unwatchable

But that Ending Scene though...
it reminds me quite a bit of the ending of Takeshi Kitano's Zatoichi (2003)

i actually fast forwarded to the iconic ending credits scene just to take that in but skipped the rest

now that i recall, i did put the film on in the background once whlie working but can't say i paid it any attention because it was so bad

like this is the dumbest thing in the world and not even dumb entertaining

can't for the life of me understand why this is an iconic film

I can watch Dr. Peter Weller in anything...

This. I love when he hosts history shows such as Engineering an Empire.

I’m quite fond of his performance in the B-tier sci-fi Screamers (1995). The movie is actually pretty decent, but falls apart in the third act. A forgotten Philip K Dick adaptation.

I've probably told the story somewhere on these forums before, but Screamers holds a special place in my memory.

It was 1997, I was turning 10 and had friends over for my birthday party. We wanted to watch Scream (1996) which was out on VHS by this time, so my dad went to the local Korean movie rental store. To this day we still don't know the actual truth of what happened, but whether my dad messed up the name of the movie, or there was a lost-in-translation moment with the Korean owner, or whether all the copies were simply already rented, he ended up coming home with Screamers instead.

We watched it anyways. I will never forget that film. Campy, but a great sci-fi horror.

I also love it dearly... but for the life of me, I distinctly remember there being two different endings for that film.

Big Trouble in Little China

Is there anyone who saw the movie for the first time as an adult in the year 2000 or later and actually thought it was good?

I didn't see it until maybe 15 years ago. I enjoyed it, but it is lesser Carpenter.

The Instigators - on Apple TV. Matt Damon and Casey Affleck get recruited for a heist which doesn't go as planned.

This movie was a ton of fun. The banter between the two (and the psychiatrist) was fantastic. Obviously not the least bit realistic, but so entertaining. It doesn't seem to be getting great reviews, but we loved it. Would recommend.

2000? No maybe saw it for the 20th time by then. And many more since. One of my absolute favorites ever. Jack Burton's (Russell) dialog is maybe the best dialog any movie character has ever gotten and subsequently delivered perfectly.

Were the special effects hokey? Sure and in some cases downright bad. But the setting, cast of characters, story and dialog are all perfect making it one of the most enjoyable and rewatchable movies ever made.

Wicked Little Letters In 1920s England, a spinster who lives with her parents gets nasty letters in the mail.

Fun little quirky film. Lots of chuckles to be had. Worth a watch.

The Instigators Apple TV+

Matt Damon? Casey Affleck? Doug Liman? Gronk?

Wait isn’t that Ving Rhames? Why isn’t he in the credits?

With this group why is this direct to tv?

Because it blows

I’ve been really wanting to rewatch furiosa (just saw it once in theaters)

The mark of a great movie. Think it’s coming on HBO soon

The best is when you realize he's parodying John Wayne.

Romulous... Technically a very made movie, and a valiant attempt.

Alien Romulus is quite fun. Recycles a lot of the stuff from the old films and doesn't do anything new, but it's packaged well. It may not be possible to make a truly scary Alien movie anymore, because we all know what's going to happen.

Cailee Spaney is great though, a far more worthy successor to Sigourney Weaver than Noomi Rapace was. David Jonsson's android was also great as he goes from inept to calculating.

Aka formulaic...

Aka formulaic...

Definitely. But like you said, well made.

Anyone know why Spike Jonze hasn't made a movie in over ten years, since Her? According to IMDB, he's been doing shorts and some TV episodes and music docs on the Beastie Boys...but no feature films.
