I *might* get a car with some modern bells and whistles for my next car, a new/newish Prius. we'll see.

for now I'm very happy with my 2016 Kia Rio with 20k miles on it, and not one bell or whistle that I can think of

Kia keeps texting me to bring it in for a recall. something about them catching fire or something lol

it takes 3 hours! and the dealership is a nightmare. I think I might rather have my car catch fire than go to that place

I'd be super happy with that as well. Those recall things are always overkill imo. You're probably fine. I mean, the recall isn't about the doors not working. If it catches fire, just get out and run away.

I'm a few weeks away from getting a car for the first time in about 15 years...I'm pretty excited! I'm trying to spend less than 4k, but also need 4 wheel drive and decent clearance so my options aren't abundant.

how have you been managing without a car for 15 years?

I lived most of my life without a car. I only got one cuz it's just so difficult to live in LA without a car.

before I lived in SF, and i'd just bicycle/walk everywhere.

i've seen a ton of cyber trucks now. maybe 50ish spottings. yesterday I saw two cute young girls in one. I think that's the first time i've seen a female owner. it was in OC. also saw a guy standing on the overpass waving a trump flag.

So I actually checked, it's been just about 12 years. Been managing pretty well until recently, tbh. I moved to where I live now and sold my car, and have mostly lived close to downtown. Usually been able to get around walking, biking, bussing and sometimes ubering. Also lived with a partner for about 5 years where we shared her car. I've worked remotely the last 8 years, so transportation to work hasn't really been an issue. Tbh, I think I just got used to it.

But now I want to start guiding again and have a strong urge to go on some solo road trips. I've been out of work for 5 months, so I figured I should probably get a car so I can open myself up to hourly jobs and guiding in the area while I continue the job hunt in my field.

I was talking to my friend in her 20s, and thinking how life used to be different. it wasn't so financially difficult. you could get a whatever job for 20 an hour, work 20 hours a week. maybe even bring it all home if it was under the table. 1600 a month. rent was like 300. it left so much more time for so many more people to do other things, art, nature, play, hobbies, live life. and not be consumed with financial stress and debt

anyway, I hope you can figure out a way to spend plenty of time in nature, and/or making music(if you still like that)

sadly, I've lost interest in acting. I haven't enjoyed it 5 years or so, except a couple times pacing around my apartment, alone, making up whatever monologue

Vanity plates seem so retro

One of my former bosses had a vanity plate, MOOF. But it was an Appalachian Trail plate, and I guess he didn't know that they add AT at the end. So he had a plate that said MOO FAT. He was a larger dude, so I can only wonder what people thought when they saw him driving with it.
