I've read a few reports that said he was drunk arriving to the airport, but chalked that up to lazy reporting. The flight was delayed for multiple hours? That would mean someone was over serving him when he already looked visibility drunk.
Obviously it's not an excuse, but if you are trying to time sleeping meds and then are delayed and have a drink(s).. It's at least plausible.
