The NHL Thread
For the 5 of us who post NHL stuff, here you go. Officially the season starts Tuesday October 11, although there were tw
would much rather have a guy like laine who is a well above average offensive player (with upside to be elite) that could potentially patch up his defensive shortcomings - at the very worst just hide him on the 3rd line and enjoy the power play production - his problem isnt' talent, it's that he's paid way too much for a guy who is a major liability on defense
yeah i'm guessing that's what the jets and cbj thought, and then the reality of the situation smacks you in the face. he legit seems like he gives zero ****s, and it's crippling. related: he's also hurt all the time, hasn't been healthy since like 2019
probably a net negative overall, making $8.7m/year lol. and the habs will probably suck again so i'm guessing the situation won't change much. but hey, if you believe maybe you can get good odds on o30 goals

their front office is extremely optimistic they can fix anyone after what they did with monahan
got monahan & his 6+ mil salary dump + 1st round pick
gave nothing
later they then traded monahan to get a 1st and 3rd round pick
just holding onto him for a year netted them 2 first round picks and a 3rd rounder
probably expecting they can pull it off again with Laine
perhaps guys getting salary dumped to the Habs is the wake up call they all need to fix their glaring problems - also kind of feels like Monahan was playing with a nagging injury that he never dealt with properly and only once he went to the Habs was he in a "sure take a season ending surgery no problem we suck anyway" which fixed things
would not be surprised if Laine has a surgery for something in the near future
Habs have the cap space. Don't expect them to be good this year. Maybe somehow fighting for 8th. Given his cap hit and that he has 2 years left, will be tough to flip him at deadline. In 2 years, ideally the Habs will be better. They might not even be sellers at the deadline.
yeah it's possible they could pump&dump him, or fix him, but with the young (probably bad) team they have i'd be worried that he might poison the well. with monahan i've never heard of him being a bad teammate or not caring or anything like that. glgl i guess
2016 Draft: Mistakes were made.
Best players 1, 6, 14, 66
St Louis offer sheeting Broberg and Holloway from the Oilers.
This is kind of a big deal - those are two pieces the Oilers expected to be able to plug in and be productive and cheap next year. Losing one or both is going to be a real issue, and keeping one or both is going to be a real problem with contract renewals for Draisaitl, Bouchard, and McDavid all on the agenda.
Oilers don't match either.
The #flyers have placed Ryan Johansen on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination, citing a material breach.
I had no idea that guy was on the Flyers now. 8 million still owed (between Flyers and Preds). Let's see if they get away with it
did they "mike richards" hiim? wild how quick teams can locate a material breach of contract as soon as a guy becomes completely washed
Richards is on Kings cap for another 4 years at 600k
The Oilers process here makes little sense. If you aren't matching Broberg, why trade Ceci?
Just look at this defense depth chart for a supposed Cup or Bust team
Ekholm-Bouchard - very good, can stand with just about any top pair
Nurse-Stecher/Edmonson - big yikes. Nurse is a mess right now, and your partners for him are a 30 year old making league min, or a 24 year old who was on waivers less than a year ago.
Kulak-Stecher/Edmonso - I mean...ok this should be a pairing that doesn't see the ice that much, and Kulak is ok.
What if one of the top pair guys gets hurt? Season over?
Going to have to outscore a lot of mistakes this year.

Yeah when they traded Cici I thought they were matching Broberg . Cici logged 20 minutes a night last year
I think the hope is Nurse figures it out.
i doubt anyone in the org is even holding out hope for that, but rather they realize they're stuck with him
Born: February 4, 1995 (Age: 29-200d)
he is what he is, and actually he's probably moving into his decline era. enjoy
nurse is still one of the best fantasy contributors for a non pp1 d guy
I mean they don't have much choice. Nurse has gotta be one of the most untradeable guys in the league. I know we've said this about many guys who did end up being traded, but it typically doesn't happen in August or September. May as well hope against hope.
It is pretty puzzling though that they ended up again with no RD that can mitigate his flaws a bit. If you have a guy like that you'd want someone to play with him who is at least secure in his own role, if not able to babysit him. Instead they've got a slew of guys who'll have to fake it as a 2nd pair dman themselves. Gotta hope they can outscore their problems in the regular season (should be fine) and then get someone legit at the deadline.
Habs should take Nurse as a reclamation project.
Askarov to Sharks and or extension already signed.
Johnny Hockey dead. God that is tragic. RIP legend
