The Box of Chocolates Thread (You never know what you're going to get!)
Welcome to the General Discussion thread. If you have a topic that doesn't warrant its own thread, post it here. Have a free form discussion going that no longer fits in the original thread? It may be moved here to give it a place to wander. Also, general chit chat is welcome!
she died over 1000 years before the Italian Renaissance.
anyway I would say that over 99% of Westerners would have no ability to make any impact.
Original question said Italian Renaissance or the height of the Roman Empire, for those who thought they would make an impact in one time but not the other.
oh well if you went to the Roman Empire then you could teach Calculus and the number 0 and get a wikipedia page. even tho the Incas, Chinese, and Arabs had been doing that kind of stuff for centuries.
roman empire - invent the stirrup
The development of science and engineering during the period when cultures were more siloed has always been fascinating to me. Progression isn't linear. There are many examples of Culture A being way ahead of Culture B in some areas, yet way behind in other areas.
Chatgopt/etc is getting there. I reckon it's rise will meet my decline in about 3 years
jal..... that's brutal. hehehe
The still is crazy, but if you watch the video in full speed, it doesn't seem nearly as leering.

Do you honestly find the still pic crazy and leering in your good faith honest opinion regardless of seeing the full video?
We are centuries away from expecting a bunch of dudes to not stare a some girls ass in a skirt as she walks away. And that is only going to happen with either powerful over the counters or when women can convince men to shop off their dicks.
With these caveats, would you succeed in your goal of being recognized as a scientific/engineering genius? How long would it take? In what area would you focus?
I think algebra and geometry would be the easiest. I don't know how close they were to power series solutions for sin and cos but that should be enough to start getting people to bother reading more advanced stuff. Then hopefully get funding and start a school trying to do engineering stuff that I would need help from tradesmen to build.

I was operating on the assumption that something resembling the Taylor series expansion for sine was known in the latter time period, hence my original suggestion of introducing complex numbers and the complex exponential. Looking this up, I may have been mistaken, at least insofar as as the pre Newton/Leibniz period.
Reminder to always have a fire extinguisher in your home in the rare event you may need it like I just did
I don’t think I can take many more unexpected events this month…
Yikes
An extinguisher in a wall bracket in the kitchen might be best. You can also have a rolled-up flameproof fire-smothering 'blanket' mounted alongside. I don't have either of these, obviously, but I have been in houses where they do.
Fire extinguisher under the kitchen sink, always. Fortunately, never had to use it.
Make sure to check if it needs refilling. The last time i used a fire extinguisher was for my vehicle catching fire in my garage.
my buddy had a fire extinguisher on his wedding registry, i thought it'd be fun to get him one, but like monogrammed with a fun fact on it about kittens or something - thought that'd be fun but never followed through
