2024 MLB Season Thread
Nobody wants these games to start more than Mannfred.
Shohei just spoke to the media for the first time. In a prepared statement, he said:
-He never bet on baseball, or any other sport,
-He didn't know that Ippei lied to him, and that Ippei took the money from Shohei's account to pay his gambling debts
-He'll continue to cooperate with the investigation, and play as the investigation plays out.
If all that's true, then this is probably the best possible outcome for his reputation going forward. He's a naive star athlete who trusted the wrong person. It happens.
In any event, these games are about start! Last year, just like we all predicted, "Someone Else" came on strong in the playoffs, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks for the World Series. Can that happen again?
T-Mobile is giving away a free MLB.tv subscription ($149 value) to T-Mobile subscribers starting TOMORROW (Tuesday 3/26 - April 1). Don't miss out.
So speaking of gambling, here are the current best odds for the World Series you can find, from Vegas insider!
Both Duran and Witt have a chance to make a run at the modern doubles+triples in a season record, of 65 by Hal McRae. And he was no fluke. He had a 10 year run on it of ~: 40, 45, 40, 65, 45, 35, 25, 45, 55, 45. And that's pretty sick considering it's not like George Brett we're talking about.
Looks like they're throwing strikes to Soto and Judge tonight. Go figure.
If it wasn't for 1957, Aaron would have never won an MVP. Or finished 2nd. That's sick. 1500 XBH, 2300 RBIs, 2200 runs, 6800 total bases. Even a 30-30 season I didn't realize he had.
39/39 Ohtani.
23 steals in his last 41 games despite not being on base much during that stretch, only 15 singles and 24 walks.
Elly De La Cruz swiped his 60th stolen base last night and joins 4 other players who have 20 home runs and 60 stolen bases. Can you name them?
I'm almost positive that Ricky Henderson, Eric the Red, and Acuna are three of them.
I'm not sure about the fourth but I'll guess Willie Mays.
Not Mays. 40 SB was his best.
I'll change my last guess to Carl Crawford, although I'm skeptical that he ever hit 20 HRs.

It certainly looks like he is going for 50/50. The SBs are 100% within his control at this point. But he probably will need a week in which he hits 5+ HRs in order to get to 50 HRs.
The SBs would look like stat chasing for a lot of guys. But Ohtani never gets caught, so for him it's just good baseball.

Ohtani's indicting disengagement more than anyone I've seen this season. After he gets two, he's off the races with a large lead.

He is truly amazing. The very best athletes seemingly have the ability to just add skills as they see fit. Ohtani has added elite baserunning in much the same way that Michael Jordan added elite post play to his game mid career.
Scott Servais getting fired by M's today. Rightfully so, best SP rotation in baseball and gave up a huge lead to a not good *stros team. Byeee.
More trivia. First 600 games of career, which players have 300+ BBs and 300+ extra base hits?
edit: nm, not trying to interrupt ongoing
Alfonso Soriano
Marquis Grissom
Kenny Lofton

I think there's an argument that Yordan is the 3rd-best hitter of the Statcast Era.
He has a .422 career xwOBA.
Judge .435
Trout .424
Soto .419
Acuna .403
Ohtani .397
Harper .394
Those are just 6 other names I looked up. Not sure who else is notable.

The fourth is...
Judge is still very prone to strikeout, so no reason to actually give him anywhere near the Bonds respect.
how can aaron boone justify sending out dj lemahieu every night as your regular 1st basemen. I mean this guy is the worst, you cant tell me they dont have some other option. i realize ben rice isnt that great either, but he cant be worse then dj lemahieu for christ sakes. is there no one in the minors they can bring up to play 1st? idk whos sitting on their couch waiting for a phone call, but anyone gotta be better then this guy.
I think DJLM was scratched for Rice tonight against the lefty
it's amazing how most people today only know him for being a terrible announcer and not that he was one of the greatest to play in his generation
He was an awful announcer. What's funny is not only was he a great player,he hated sabermetrics yet they showed him to even an even better player than people thought using conventional stats.
40/40 in epic fashion.
50/50 watch is serious.
