2024 MLB Season Thread

Nobody wants these games to start more than Mannfred.

Shohei just spoke to the media for the first time. In a prepared statement, he said:

-He never bet on baseball, or any other sport,
-He didn't know that Ippei lied to him, and that Ippei took the money from Shohei's account to pay his gambling debts
-He'll continue to cooperate with the investigation, and play as the investigation plays out.

If all that's true, then this is probably the best possible outcome for his reputation going forward. He's a naive star athlete who trusted the wrong person. It happens.

In any event, these games are about start! Last year, just like we all predicted, "Someone Else" came on strong in the playoffs, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks for the World Series. Can that happen again?

T-Mobile is giving away a free MLB.tv subscription ($149 value) to T-Mobile subscribers starting TOMORROW (Tuesday 3/26 - April 1). Don't miss out.

So speaking of gambling, here are the current best odds for the World Series you can find, from Vegas insider!

Yeah Shohei is just on another level.

He's so good, his 40 home runs is now leading the league over Judge's 49 who isn't even on the board anymore.

He was an awful announcer. What's funny is not only was he a great player,he hated sabermetrics yet they showed him to even an even better player than people thought using conventional stats.

Correct. Modern analytics would have loved his emphasis on OBP.

40/40 in epic fashion.

50/50 watch is serious.

Imagine dropping his walkoff grandslam to hit 40/40 on to the field.

that's pretty amazing the opportunity for that took place

Letting him pitch to resume the game would be epic.

And he had a glove.
Pathetic display.

The Rockies kicking the snot out of the Yankees makes me giggle.

I'm on record from a ways back Votto gets in the Hall. Here's a great interview about his retiring, talking about coming "full circle poetic" because his boyhood favorite player, Devon White, was sitting next to him on the bench when he retired. In the Hall. It's some borderline rote numbers in the vicinity of many who didn't make it, but he has some x factors.

I thought the same.thing. 2 guys were there and by them both going for it I think they bumped and therefore neither got it.

on thursday, the rockies got blown out by a guy who was 2-12 with an ERA roughly the cost of a McDonald's "Value Meal" right now. of equal importance, the rockies are amongst the worst road teams in the league.

in summary - lol yankees

also lol angels for almost getting no-hit by some 5th starter at best pitcher today

also lol crads for this (predictable) collapse of late.

Ohtani hits number 41. I'm feeling like at this moment he's a slight favourite for the 50/50. He's coming out of a big slump and is still right on the pace. Seems like the steals are a breeze no way he fails if he reaches the home runs. My earliest baseball memories include a sticker album that had a cover photo of Canseco as baseballs first 40/40 man.

He got hit in the face with a ball before the game.

oh ****

Francisco Lindor is the NL MVP.

Discuss.

He's top-2 for sure with Marte slowing down. I also think that WAR has to be off on Chris Sale. In an age where no pitcher is staying healthy, his health might be the MVP of the league. IIRC, Sale didn't start a full workload until May and he has 5.4 fWAR. But it's between Lindor and Ohtani. They're within the margin of error of each other. Ohtani is ahead of Lindor, offensively, obviously, but Lindor might runs way with a legit Gold Glove at the 2nd most difficult position.

Lindor is leading the NL in fWAR

Wasn't Lindor snubbed from the All-Star Game?

He kept them receipts.

He kept them receipts.

How many times has a league leader in fWAR been snubbed from the ASG? Not saying this should matter. Just curious.

Three lefties have OPSes of over .950 against LHP this season:

Soto, 1.033 (182 PAs)
Yordan, 1.009 (171)
Schwarber, .957 (203)

Is this crazy?

Yordan has always murdered lefties.

I think last year they put up a stat that the 4 hightest career OPS for lefties against lefties were Ruth Gehrig Bonds and Yordan.

And yet managers will still bring in scrub lefty specialists to face him and hand out souvenir home run balls.

2 more for Judge

It's crazy for Schwarber.

Cycle watch in Philly. Weston Wilson and Stubbs hitting for the cycle 10 days apart would be wild.
